Heard It in a Love Song: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 572 ratings

A heartwarming love story about starting over and second chances from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl He Used to Know.

Love doesn't always wait until you're ready.

Layla Hilding is thirty-five and recently divorced. Struggling to break free from the past—her glory days as the lead singer in a band and a ten-year marriage to a man who never put her first—Layla's newfound independence feels a lot like loneliness. Then there's Josh, the single dad whose daughter attends the elementary school where Layla teaches music. Recently separated, he's still processing the end of his twenty-year marriage to his high school sweetheart. He chats with Layla every morning at school and finds himself thinking about her more and more.

Equally cautious and confused about dating in a world that favors apps over meeting organically, Layla and Josh decide to be friends with the potential for something more. Sounds sensible and way too simple—but when two people are on the rebound, is it heartbreak or happiness that's a love song away?
Heard It in a Love Song is a sweet, contemporary romance about finding love after heartbreak and getting a second chance at happily ever after.

5 REALLY BIG STARS!! There is something so completely satisfying in reading those final words in the final pages of a really REALLY good book. After I close the book and turn it over in my hands, all the scenes from the story flip over in my mind like an old film reel, with particularly well-written scenes jumping out and almost teasing me to go back and read them again. Heard it in a Love Song was allllllll of that for me and more. At the crux of it, Heard it in a Love Song is a love letter to anyone who has ever married their first love and then realized it wasn’t their endless love. As readers, we experience dual timelines glimpsing the destruction of two separate marriages, and the new love establishing between our main characters, Josh and Layla. Graves does an excellent job with character development, and gives us real voices with relatable experiences and challenges. Josh and Layla are unique and their love story is a slow, gentle, friends to lovers journey all while navigating the baggage and insecurities that divorce undoubtedly leaves in its wake. Possibly one of the most refreshing parts for me, was although there was plenty of trepidation between the main characters, there was an absence of unnecessary drama. Yes! I enjoyed this story and savored it’s unapologetic nod to rock and roll, and navigating new love after devastating heartbreak.

31/2 stars...It wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either. The novel follows the course of three relationships. The first, is the new relationship between Layla and Josh. You get to experience how a new relationship forms between two very nice people. As Layla and Josh's relationship unfolds you also get flashbacks on their failed relationships. Layla's relationship with Liam is the most frustrating. She pretty much married a narcissist who dominates their relationship with his wants and needs. I got pretty frustrated with Layla not leaving this horrible person. Josh's relationship with Kimmy is not as dramatic. Josh married his high school sweetheart. Their relationship is one of growing up and growing apart.

I enjoyed the format of telling each chapter partly in the present and partly in the past. The characters were likable and realistic. There just wasn’t anything special to see here, especially as compared to her other work. It’s lighthearted reading that doesn’t require thinking, and that certainly has its place, but I was underwhelmed. Try something else of hers, especially The Girl He Used to Know. Now that one is special.

This book is a romance for people who think they don’t like romances. As a long-married lady, sometimes the current wave of love stories can hit me the wrong way with their youthful exuberance and head-in-the-clouds energy. I think this is why Heard It In A Love Song was a revelation to me. The characters were mature, starting over after divorce, very deliberative and straightforward in their communications, and determined not to rush into another mistake. Instead of thinking, "No don't do that!" for the whole book, I was cheering the characters on for being wise and honest and not playing games. You will love this book!

I fell in love with Tracey Garvis Graves writing when I first read "On the Island." I enjoyed this story so much I'm a little sad it's over.

Every word she writes brings love to life. Kimmy and Josh, Liam and Layla. Both couples divorced and struggling to find themselves again.

Josh and Layla meet at school, where Josh's daughter Sasha attends and where Layla teaches music.

Layla grew up singing and playing music. She let her dream go and got married. A dream that she misses but not in the way she ever imagined. She and Josh become just friends, then that leads to dating. Kimmy, Josh's ex wife has suddenly had a change of heart. Josh and Layla take a break so that Josh can either move forward or take a step back.

In the end love and happiness will be the thing that decides everyone's fate.

Will it be the love sing they all hear?
