Hooking Up: A Novel (Shacking Up Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,996 ratings

Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception–but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of proclaiming his undying love, her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw.

Mortified and desperate to escape the post-wedding drama, Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. She should know better than to sleep with someone she knows, but she can’t seem to resist him.
They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical.

Filled with hilariously scandalous situations and enough sexual chemistry to power an airplane from New York City to the South Pacific,
Hooking Up is the next standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from Helena Hunting, the New York Times bestselling author of the Pucked series and Shacking Up.

"No was the very last thing I wanted to say to you."

I really have no idea why I didn't read this book sooner. If you haven't read it, let me tell you, that you are missing out! After reading Shacking Up I was quite interested in reading Amie's story but I somehow got caught up with other stuff and Hooking Up got left behind. Then I read I Flipping Love You (book 3 in this series) and then the novella Getting Down (book 1.5). Last got me back on track and there was no way I would push reading Hooking Up anymore behind.
And let me tell you, I'm really really glad I've read this one now. I absolutely adored Hooking Up. As much as I loved reading Shacking Up, this one is perfection!

"And his voice is like sex. The naughty, dirty kind."

Hooking Up has everything my romance reader heart wishes for. It's funny, it's deep, has a great storyline and character development. It has characters you fall easy for and start caring for them. You just want to keep reading about them, not wanting their story to end.

"It's not a very coordinated kiss. It's messy and teeth-clashing. It's want and need. It's possession. Hers and mine."

Amalie and Lexington are quite a match. And I believe in fate: All they went through had to happen so that they were ready to start a new "us" together. Their connection and chemistry is stunning and they are so CUTE together. Lex is so caring. I totally expected him to be one of the alpha-males and even though he's demanding, but in a good and lovable way, he's just the right amount of everything: dark and sexy with a tender soul. His charisma charms you right off your feet.

"I came three times. During sex. That's like being told unicorns are real. And then actually seeing one."

Amalie is also not what she might look like. She's just a girl wanting to love and be loved. She wants to please her parents and that's were she stopped thinking about what she really wants/needs for herself. Amie is extremely good looking, stunning and you expect her to be full of herself. But she SO isn't. And after what happened on her wedding reception, she's broken and needs to find back to her old self. Lex has an amazingly empathetic way in helping her.

"I know all I am is a distraction from reality, but I still want her, even if I shouldn't."

Lex and Amie's compatibility in and out of the bedroom - I don't have even words for this. Except: I WANT THIS for me as well. That's what every girl should be looking for and never settle for less!

"He kisses me, and I surrender to the control he seems to have over my body, aware that if he keeps this up, he's going to have the same control over my heart."

For me, Hooking Up is the best book in the Shacking Up series. Lexington so totally made it on my list of my all-time favorite book-boyfriends!

"She's my sun and I'm her moon, connected by an invisible thread, bound but free."

As the mother of two boys, I felt like the boys in Hooking Up missed the lecture on...Use Your Words, Not Your Hands. My boys, thank goodness, are more about rough-housing than fists flying and I'm hoping this will never change. Sure, there are lots of screaming matches and doors slammed but I'd rather that than bruises and busted lips. I'd have to say, though, that a few of those acts of aggression in Hooking Up were well deserved. Armstrong was a douchewaffle of epic proportions.

WHAT SANE AND DECENT BLOKE CHEATS AT HIS OWN BLOODY WEDDING?

...and that therein lies the problem. Everyone who knows Armstrong knows he's far from sane and completely indecent. That is, everyone except his new wife, Amalie.

It's amazing what you can convince yourself into believing when the image before you looks right. Armstrong is clean-cut, well-spoken, from a good family, and holds a respected place in his family's business. Amalie is trying to make better choices in her relationships, so what she sees is, what she thinks, a better choice. Unfortunately, she missed some glaringly obvious red flags and is now paying the consequences. If only she'd gone with her gut instinct and waited for the hot guy to deliver her drink.

Lex took one look at Amalie and decided that he definitely wanted to know her better. One minute things were looking good, the next, his dodgy cousin had stepped in and stolen his girl. Months later, and when the wedding turns into a shemozzle, Lex is warned away because of Amalie's fragile emotions. But, wouldn't you believe it, Amalie falls practically in his lap and gives him the opportunity to win back his girl.

I enjoyed reading Hooking Up but admit to a decent dose of frustration when it came to Amalie's character. Sexy Lexy is the full package. He's thoughtful, sweet and caring while also extremely sexy and HOT!! I just felt that Amalie made things a lot harder than they needed to be at times and I wasn't sure why Lex put up with it all. Sure, she's been hurt but her ups and downs, highs and lows, ins and outs were a wee bit frustrating.

Hooking Up was a very sexy read and there's even a wee bit of kinky in this one. It wasn't OTT or cringe-worthy, more about finding your pleasure with a few kinky toys.

I highly recommend giving Hooking Up a try for Lex alone. With that cover model in mind and the man we get to know, he's almost bloody perfect. Amalie does come good but she's a bit of hard work and a twit. Lex for the win!!!

Waaaah! This book is so freaking good!

I adored Amalie (Amie) in Shacking Up, and especially in the novella in the halloween novella that we got in the Eye Candy anthology).

But now? Now I love her so much!

In the earlier books, she is engaged to Armstrong, and we all think that he is nothing but a d!ck with no balls. Now we know that is true!

Do you remember Lex? He is Bane's brother and all kinds of good!

I might kinda be a little bit in love with him (ok, so I lie, I am a lot in love with him!) He is everything and more that a girl could ever want.

I did get frustrated at times with Amie - I wanted to knock some sense into her with my Kindle (damn girl, you need to wake up!!). I could understand why, but with everything that had happened, I just wanted her to give the big middle finger to everyone and be herself - maybe that is more my issue than hers though.

Hooking Up has a bit of everything. Of course there is some hooking up and sexy times (oooheeeee the sexy times!) however there is plenty of laughs and tears and some drama thrown in too.

Do yourself a big favour - buy and read Hooking Up. Right now. Do it.

Why are you still reading this and not the book?

What can I say? I loooooved this book. The sex is hot, the story takes you pretty much from the beginning, both characters are interesting and fun, not that cliché. Lex is perfect. His back-up story with his cousin is a bit farfetched but who cares?

It's my first read of the author and of the series and I can say I didn't like Ruby that much (BFF of Amie and heroine of the 1st book of the series) but I'll definitely be reading more of the author.

If you love modern romance and hot scenes, this book is for you.

I've been itching to get my hands on this book ever since reading Shacking Up and then seeing Amelie's Halloween night of adventure in Eye Candy. Amie is a really likeable heroine and at times during this book my heart ached for her and the utter humiliation she endured at the hands of her douchebag husband. Argh, I wanted to slap Armstrong. Horrible man who I loved to hate! Cue the hero of the hour....Lexington....OMG! The romance novel world needs more characters like Lex. He ticked all the boxes from sinfully handsome , charming, fun, sweet to loyal, strong, determined, gentle and considerate. He's not perfect (thankfully) but he's pretty damned close.

Really enjoyable and well written book that kept my attention and heart firmly in its grip. The characters all capture your attention from the very start and I loved the dynamics between them. Also, Amie and Lex are very different characters to Ruby and Bane which I liked.

HEA? Yes - it was perfect for them.
    Cheating? No.

Hooking Up by Helena Hunting is a sexy rom/com about a second chance at love with a twist. After Shacking Up I was so excited for Amalie story. She's such a strong character and Armstrong is such an complete moron I wanted to see how Amalie's story would play out and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't laugh as much in this story as I did in Shacking Up but damn I was so happy that Armstrong got what was coming to him. Lexington is a dream and a complete gentleman to Amalie. As true to live, it's interesting to see how one small moment in a persons life. I loved the push and pull between Amalie and Lexington and cheered for them throughout! 5 Bora Bora Stars for Hooking Up by Helena Hunting
