Horse of a Different Colour Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

A really weird thing happens to 11 year old Megan Crewe when she bumps into Jack the old carthorse.

She’s too busy to worry about it until she realises what a terrible secret she’s uncovered.

Jack is in danger but no one will believe it except her best friend Amy. Their ideas come thick and fast, but nothing works, and as the menace creeps closer, events snowball.

There’s a horse in Amy’s mum’s prize greenhouse, a lot of tomato ketchup in places it shouldn’t be, a ton of heavenly chocolate, and the dreadful taste of artificial flowers.

In all the chaos, can they save Jack? Or has the danger that stalked the old horse turned its eye on them instead?

A bit of whimsy and horse-love creates an engaging read for everyone. 'Jack' is the old carthorse that has done his duty, now time to love and be loved for Jack. A heart-warming story that will keep you hooked and entertained. A quick read for adults; a thought-provoking good read for the younger crowd. I love the cover; kudos to the author and illustrator. Recommended reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Humorous, Engaging Adventure for Kids who Love Horses
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 22, 2022
This intriguing and humorous adventure story for children, especially those who love horses, involves a little magic in the form of role play that suddenly becomes real! It becomes potentially rather dangerous for young Megan, able to swap places with Jack, the old and rather neglected horse of the title.
It’s a great tale, involving readers in the worlds of school bullies, animal welfare, silly aunts, parental failures, and the themes of justice, compassion, and the delights of chocolate.
Well-written and easy to read, it is told through characters both adults and younger readers will be fully able to empathise with, though there may be slightly different attitudes to these, dependent on age! The story has plenty of tension to encourage page-turning, incidents to make readers care, cry out in alarm, shed the occasional tear, and laugh, laugh a lot.
A book for youngsters to read by themselves or as a bedtime story from those wonderful parents who still find the time to do something so marvellous. I’m a grumpy old man, and I enjoyed it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A read to make anyone smile
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 11, 2016
This is a fast-paced and very funny book, aimed at late pre-teens, but this post-post-post-teen would certainly read another by the author. It’s also a title I’d read to or with a younger reader because it has all the emotional content and moral guidelines they will embrace. And there’s a horse, an old lumbering ex carthorse with a dozy attitude.

Eleven year old Megan is a girl of her time, so although there’s a more timid side-kick, Amy, who later comes into her own, there are mobile phones, a bullying peer, chocolate, homework to evade, detention to suffer. There is also the earnestness of the age group when trying to find simple solutions to complex problems, and attempting to bamboozle grown-ups into ‘doing the right thing’ as they see it. But how do you explain to a grown-up that you can change places with a horse – and can’t always change back – bringing about some lovely touches of tummy-ache through nibbling hawthorn hedges. A story to pin a smile on any reader’s face, and one to be read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Both funny and moving!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 17, 2016
A fast-paced tale that’s both funny and moving. Although intended for children there’s no dumbing down, and it makes a good short read for adults. The story revolves around schoolgirl Megan, her best friend Amy and a horse in jeopardy. Their antics will make you smile, but there is real tension as the book gallops towards a very satisfying denouement. It’s good that it’s short because it’s hard to put down.

We read this in one go. It was so good we couldn't put it down. I read it to my neighbours child and he loved it too. We really loved the little twist near the end. Highly recommended for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars and loved it! I love the fact that it didn't ...

It was only after I bought this book that I realised it's for younger readers....so with trepidation, I sat down and read it...and loved it! I love the fact that it didn't feel 'dumbed down', and the story was great.
