4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 267 ratings

When Elsinore Cosgrove escapes a ballroom in search of adventure, she has no idea it will lead to a hasty marriage. The youngest daughter of a duke, all she wants is to make her own choices. Now she's engaged to an infuriating, handsome Scottish baron who doesn't even know her name! Using all her feminine wiles, along with advice gleaned from a training guide for hunting hounds, Elsinore is determined to mold her baron into the husband she wants.

Quin Graham is a man with many secrets. If another scandal can be avoided with a sham marriage, so be it. Only his fiancée isn't at all what he's expecting, and the clumsy, curious, and clever Elsinore refuses to be set aside. For reasons he's unwilling to explain, the last thing Quin needs is to fall for his wife.

Review

"How To Train Your Baron by Diana Lloyd was a fun read! As an historical romance you expect a certain amount of miscommunication between the two leads. In this case, the miscommunication was present with a dry wit and a comedy of 'accidents'." -Martha L., Goodreads "I really loved this book. It had just the right mix of fun, serious layers and adventure." -Eva H., Goodreads "This delightfully humorous book had me laughing out loud." -Brenda T., Goodreads "An amusing, sweet, and adventurous historical romance. It has lovely characters and an intriguing story. I loved it.' -Petula W., Goodreads "This was such a fun read! I'll definitely be reading more from Diana Lloyd in the future!" -Erika C., NetGalley

From the Author

Book One of my "What happens in the Ballroom" series, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BARON is a Regency romp mash-up of Cinderella and Humpty-Dumpty. Scottish baron, Lord Quin Graham, loses his shoe at a ball while trying to help the daughter of a duke, Elsinore Cosgrove. His shoe is used as proof of impropriety, and a hasty marriage is arranged. When Elsinore discovers her husband is a broken man shattered by his past, she schemes to put him back together again and mold him into the husband she knows he can be.

This first book by Diana Lloyd is a promise to great and entertaining readings to come.
I do adored Elsinore, she is so smart and clever even if each attempt to follow her thoughts ends up in total mess, but she tries and perseveres.
I did not know what to think of Quin, from the beginning I understood he had suffered a lot but still I strained to forgive him for his harsh treatment of his new wife, she did nothing to deserve such a treatment.
There were so many miscommunications and misunderstandings, he was angry and tried to hurt her when he discovered she played with him about her name. But he was also the first to not know hers and after he believes he can blame her for her little trick while she tried to right it. Just he never listens to her, only thinking the worst at first, never able to accept it is her innocence that speaks to him, even if the wrong way.
He is so quick to jump to conclusion, blinded by his late wife betrayal, he is unable to see Elsinore for who she is really, a young woman who wants to find her place in society and in his life.
He tells it is to protect her but he does only hurt her by rejecting her and always doubting her.
He was lucky Elsinore was the kind of character to never give up, she is the one hero in this tale, she decided she will make this marriage work and win her husband love, when he belittles her like most of the men of these times did.
It was in a rather unorthodox way, just wait to see which guid books she decided to use, but she stayed true to herself, while he is the one to not trust her and keeping secrets at the same time.
I was angry that she has every time to prove she meant no harm while he keeps her in the dark when she should be aware of the danger lurking around them.

A 4.5 stars rate for this witty tale.

I enjoyed Quin and Elsinore’s story. I was a bit frustrated that they seemed to work at cross purposes almost to the very end. I wish they would have shared their secrets and insecurities sooner and had more time to work out the mystery and solve the crime.

They did finally come together for the happy ending, so I am satisfied. I will probably read more books by this author.

Diana Lloyd’s skill at creating a Regency world will pull you in and hold you until the end of the story. Her ability to develop characters who are delightful, wounded, misguided, and endearing captured my heart from the beginning. The witty banter between Elsinore and Quin is foreplay for their steamy romantic encounters, all written with deft cleverness. They are witty without being snarky, and they are well-rounded without being forced. I confess that Regency romances are not my favorite reads, but Ms. Lloyd may have converted me. She weaves such an intriguing mystery into the plot that I couldn’t stop reading. Her ability to insinuate a clue, to drop a hint as to some evil in the past kept me turning the pages. I was delightfully surprised at how much I enjoyed Ms. Lloyd’s story. If you enjoy Regency (and even if you don’t) this book is a must read

I waffled between two and three stars for this book and settled on three because I wanted to read to the end. This book annoyed me. It did not flow well, IMHO. I am an Instructional Designer by trade, so my job is to take a bunch of content and rework it into a thoughtfully structured flow that supports the learning objectives. It is much like writing, where you start with a premiss, create an outline, identify the main plot points, and build the story. The fact that this book skipped all over the place leads me to believe the author just sat down and started writing with no outline and no structure, or they had a very poor editor that either didn't see the holes or chopped content and created the holes. It seemed like content was missing at points in the story, so much so that I flipped back to make sure I hadn't inadvertently skipped ahead and missed something. Nope, it was just a missing scene that was either cut or the writer forgot to write.

An example was after their first stay at a coaching inn on the trip to Scotland, Elsinore is thinking back to Quin untying her nightshift with his teeth; that scene never happened in the book. They did not have sex that night at all. She fell asleep; he was restless, got out of bed, and dressed - skip to the next morning. There were more instances like that, and those types of errors grate on my nerves. Other inconsistency, too, like her taking off her gloves on one page and the next page taking off her gloves again. When did she put the gloves back on?

Also, Quin's running hot and cold with the whole trust thing was not believable. In one chapter, his trust issues are ramped up and justified by his past experiences, and you sort of start to feel for the guy, and in the next chapter, they are down-played, and he waffles too easily, too fast. Either you are traumatized by your past, or you are not. You do not waffle so easily back and forth, hot and cold. I can see a gradual build-up to confronting the trust issues, but the back and forth made the plot-point weak and unrealistic.

This review reads like I hated the book, which I did not. It could have been a much better book with a good editor and better structure and development.

A Regency romp that will make you smile at every cleverly written word. DIana Lloyd’s HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BARON is filled with sparkling dialogue and two main characters who never give the reader a chance to catch a breath. In this first book of the series, Ms. Lloyd brings her wonderful characters to life with a unique style and voice. A well-paced, intriguing plot moves the story forward smoothly. Not just a simple romance, there is often humor in the twists and turns, secret pasts, lies and jealousy, and discovery of true love . That’s a lot to put in one book, but Ms. Lloyd does it brilliantly. I look forward to reading Book 2.
Oh, by the way, to learn how to train your own baron, you’ll have to read Book 1.
