How to Love Thine Enemy (Howl at the Moon Book 6) Kindle Edition
By Eli Easton
Can a forbidden love heal the rift between two enemy tribes?
Legend says that, centuries ago, the sled dogs and the Inuit were so deeply bonded that the dogs rose up on two legs and became men. The Qimmig and the People lived together happily until one of the Inuit betrayed the dog-men. The Qimmig fled, vowing never to return.
Taq figured that was just another story elders told around the campfire. But when he witnesses two guys survive a polar bear attack by shifting into dogs, he has to rethink everything. Could the Qimmig really exist? And could they have anything to do with the special, golden-eyed boy he’d played with as a child?
Cupun has missed his old friend, Taq. But it is forbidden for the Qimmig to have anything to do with one-skinned Inupiat. When a series of events brings Taq back into his life, the feelings of protectiveness and joy awakened in his dog’s heart tell him that Taq is his soul’s mate.
But neither the Qimmig nor the Inuit are prepared to accept this bond. Are the boys fated for tragedy? Or will their love find a way?
How to Love Thine Enemy is a star-crossed lovers/Romeo and Juliet trope set in Alaska. Friends-to-lovers, doggie shifters, and destined romance with a little wilderness adventure.

About the author

Having been, at various times and under different names, a minister's daughter, a computer programmer, a game designer, the author of paranormal mysteries, a fan fiction writer, an organic farmer and a profound sleeper, Eli is happily embarking on yet another incarnation as a m/m romance author.
As an avid reader of such, she is tickled pink when an author manages to combine literary merit, vast stores of humor, melting hotness and eye-dabbing sweetness into one story. She promises to strive to achieve most of that most of the time. She currently lives on a farm in Pennsylvania with her husband, three bulldogs, three cows and six chickens. All of them (except for the husband) are female, hence explaining the naked men that have taken up residence in her latest fiction writing.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2024Truly a Romeo and Juliet story made into a HEA romance! I love the way our boys are in love form the start, and it’s their families and communities who are enemies—and that enmity is healed when the boys are endangered by it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023For centuries, there’s been a rift between the Intuit living in Yakatuk area and the Qimmiq, the “two-skinned” who can shift from human to dogs. That doesn’t matter to Taq and his friend Cupun as each summer, the boys play along the shore as Taq’s father, a fisherman, works, and then they don’t see each other again until the next year. But one year Cupun doesn’t return, and though Taq longs for his friend, he eventually accepts he won’t see him again. When he finally does, it’s during an emergency situation and he’s astounded to learn that Cupun is a Qimmiq and that the feelings he once had are still present, stronger than ever, and returned by Cupun.
This is a Romeo and Juliet sort of tale: star-crossed lovers who eventually meet again and know they must be together forever. The struggles they face come from prejudiced family members and pack alike, and the harsh weather elements add to their distress and endanger their lives.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and appreciated the author’s desire to complete the series and bring the Quickened full circle back to the original Qimmiq in Alaska. But, for me, this story fell short of the previous ones in a few ways. First, I didn’t feel the “spark” that usually happened between the couples when they met in the other books. Taq and Cupun felt almost like an established couple due to their meeting years before and though they were both virgins, physically and emotionally, I didn’t feel their spark. Basically, their romance wasn’t exciting.
Second, Taq and Cupun were not central to the story—yes, they were principal characters, but the story was about the healing between the Inuit and the Qimmiq with a sprinkle of Quickened thrown in. The romance was like the cherry on the ice cream sundae but did not make up a substantial part of the sundae.
Third, the author usually has a few really interesting and entertaining secondary characters in these stories—I’m thinking Lance’s mother, Daisy, who is hard to forget—but both Taq’s father and grandmother were unlikable and the group of Quickened from the past didn’t fill that entertaining role, nor did Yuki, the angry pack leader. And Taq’s friend Heath was not much of a bestie because he not only abandoned Taq when needed, he also headed to Anchorage without thought to Taq, and then returned with reporters—not for the good of his people, but for his own monetary gain. With all that, I couldn’t blame Taq and Cupun for thinking of departing the area and never looking back.
But, I really liked the second half of the book, which was so much more interesting. The drama increased as the boys were lost and the others, both Intuit and Qimmiq, rallied to find them. Those later chapters were exciting, and I enjoyed the humor in watching both Yuki and Granny in their interactions at the party. I also appreciated the author’s closure to the feud and to the story of the Quickened and the Qimmig. And, finally, I enjoyed the deep love and commitment that shone through between Taq and his soulmate, Cupun, in the second half of the book.
Still one of my all-time favorite series and I highly recommend it to all.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2023I was very happy to read another story in this world. Taq and Cupun are soul mates that finally find their way back to each other. And, the story highlights the effects of climate change on marginalized communities around the world, it is real.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2023I'm so happy that Eli released another story in this series. I really enjoyed Coupun and Taq's story. This is a mix of childhood friends to lovers and enemies to lovers book. This whole series is a must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023I’m a fan of Eli Easton in general but I don’t think this series is for me. I started with this book but you don’t need to read I. Order so that wasn’t the problem. The first 1/3 the book the two MC don’t interact at all. The overall dialogue and storyline just came across as juvenile. I found it all hard to take seriously. It was well written as always I just couldn’t get into these characters. Btw they were never enemies.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2023The latest installment in Eli Easton’s Howl at the Moon series brings a beautiful retelling of Romeo & Juliet that’s steeped in native culture and folklore. I really enjoyed the mystique and wonder surrounding Taq & Cupun’s story. If you haven’t read this series, this book does stand on its own, however it contains spoilers for earlier books. Having some knowledge of the packs and peoples involved is helpful, so I’d recommend reading the series in order for the best experience.
As is often the case with retellings of this Shakespearean classic, one of the best things about the romance is the forbidden nature of it. Seeing two souls drawn to each other and destined to be together elicits a powerful, heart wrenching empathy made all the more devastating when no one supports them. Taq & Cupun’s connection, love & devotion are pure and misunderstood; it’s impossible not to want to fight for their right to love one another. All of the hallmarks of this experience are here in Easton’s beautiful retelling, and I found the story really compelling.
For me, this series far exceeds what readers have come to expect from paranormal shifter romance. It’s unique in how it intertwines the history and culture of native peoples with that of the region and shifter lore. Not only does it provide some basis in reality, but Easton asserts a level of desperation to the story. The tale of populations fighting to survive is as old as time, although here it’s apparent they’re not meant to live apart. Rather, you get the impression they’ve always been stronger together, regardless of what has come between them.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2023A sweet and low angst conclusion to the Mad Creek series, with cameos from previous books adding flavor to the story. The romance was innocent and lovely, and the struggle between groups with old grudges building new bridges was a hopeful touch.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2023I appreciated the author's explanation of past character s and events since I couldn't remember the last book very well. I miss the setting of Mad Creek, but I enjoyed Cupun and Taq as a couple.

5.0 out of 5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Romeo & Juliet set in Alaska with a HEA :D
It was fun to return to the world of the Quickened and the Qimmiq with this sixth installment of the series. I really liked Taq and Cupun and enjoyed watching Taq learn the secret and experience the wonder of this “magic” in the world . Their childhood connection and the concept of mates in the series made me believe the speed of their romance, and I enjoyed watching them rise above the challenges (but not *too* many challenges) to be together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Crossed Lovers.
Once again, a well written story, from Ms Easton, that pulls you in from the beginning. I loved Taq & Cupun's story, you could really feel how much they meant to each other. They face many obstacles however, despite everything, they remain strong and devoted to one another. It was lovely to read how they were together, they only saw one another, their love so intense and genuine. I read it in one sitting, and it was impossible not to want to reach in and hug both guys, even though you know from the beginning that they're going to get their HEA. They're so young and idealistic, their love so sweet. The way it's written, captured the emotions of Taq and Cupun beautifully, and you have to feel for both of them. It was a story worth waiting for, I so enjoyed coming across Zeus, Timo, and some others from the Mad Creek series. Time for a re read methinks 😍

なんとなく物足りない感がしました。
マッドクリークとキミックの交流がもっと読みたかったです。
次はもしかしたらユキとブルーノの話になるんですかね。
続編も期待しています。

4.0 out of 5 stars Reunited.
MM, Friends to Lovers, Sexual awakening, Shifters, Adventure, Romance. Easy to read, twists and turns throughout with a fast moving plot with lots of drama and adventure and great characters. A great read that is part of a series but read well as a stand-alone. A guaranteed HEA.
