Ice Dragon: An Epic Fantasy Adventure (The Dragon Misfits Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,891 ratings

When a mysterious stranger brings word of a dragon, Jason’s whole world changes.

The northern mountain village offers protection from the threat of dragons, but is a difficult place, especially for a misfit like Jason Dreshen. His days are spent hunting for food for his family, praying for warmth, and trying to hide his strange silver eye that grants him dragon sight.

When a stranger visits during the local Freedom Festival searching for a different kind of dragon, everything changes.

Forced down the mountainside, Jason learns the truth of powers he’d only heard about in rumors. While running from deadly Dragon Souls, he finds he might have more of a connection to magic than only dragon sight. In order to save himself and stop the Dragon Souls, he must learn a truth about himself that leads him closer to the one thing he fears above all others: dragons.

Somehow, he might be the only one able to protect them from the Dragon Souls, but how can he protect what he hates?

Ice Dragon is the first book in The Dragon Misfits fantasy adventure series.

I found it hard to put the the Ice Dragon down. It was a great read. I think because I have always have had a secret desire to own a Dragon, I can never resist a book that shows a dragon on the cover. The book is well written, has solid and likable characters and few really nasty ones. It was fun to read and left me excited to start book two ...... which I am half way through. Good reading for just about anyone who likes coming of age scenarios and pretends their dog is a dragon.

I'm used to Mr. Holmberg's writing being much more skillfully crafted than I found in this book. There was a lot of repetition that reminded me of Louis L'Amour's later books.
HOWEVER, I'm very glad I read the book and it finally improved its pace, and quality, toward the last chapters and ended with a bang. I'm ready to go on to "Iron Dragon" the next book in the series.
Anyone who enjoys dragons will enjoy the uniqueness of the dragons in this book. The plot involved dragon slavers and those who care for free dragons. The protagonist, Jason, grows up in a small village at the top of a treeless mountain that is covered in snow year round. The beginning of the book reminded me a bit of "Eragon," but it quickly showed how different the story was within a few pages.
All the D.K. Holmberg books I have read have been really good, if sometimes a little slow paced. This is the first one I've read with a little lower quality of writing. Don't let it put you off from trying others of his books.
I would rate this book G.

    I recommend this book.

I get nervous delving into new D.K. Holmberg world's because I love the old worlds so much, but yet again, I'm just as much in love with this new one as I am with all of the others! I think some people might find the story slow to begin with, but that's part of what I love about it. In a series, you need to get to know the characters and really build the depth of the world and Mr. Holmberg does that beautifully. You start to get to know Jason and everything he's been through and learn what drives him. You also get the addition of characters such as William and Henry that I know we'll end up loving. And I can't wait to explore the relationship that I know is sure to build between Jason and Sarah. Was it fast paced? Not too much. Lots of Action? Enough to keep the good flow going. Was it worth it? Absolutely! This is the beginning of what is sure to be another epic series from Mr. Holmberg. I'd like to say thank you a million times over to Mr. Holmberg for putting the second book in the series out on the 21st because I don't think I could wait longer than that to continue the story! If you haven't read any of this authors works yet, this would be a great new world to start with, and just know that all of his other worlds are just as enthralling. Enjoy!!!

Only DK Holmberg would come up with such a different concept about dragons’ interaction with humans. The term “misfit” is not as derogatory as imagined.

Really shocked at how much this book seem to drag on... (no pun intended). I have always really enjoyed reading D.K. Holmberg books along with my Grandsons. The both of them learned how fantastic reading a good book can be. I have always read books either to them or with them and I am sure this is how they learned stay at home adventures can be had when really getting into a great book. Both of them really like this author's books. They didn't agree with me about the drag in the story line. And that just might be my old brain rushing to get more books read before I'm called to the other side!! (Possible explanation, LMAO) So the 3 of use will now move on to reading the next book in The Dragon Misfits series. BTW my GS are 13 and 15.

The hero is nearly an idiot. It takes a deft hand to have a character be naive but likable. Unfortunately, that is not the case here. Without giving away too much, consider the following as an example. The hero withholds information from his allies supposedly to protect another. However, their enemy is aware of the information and the hero knows it. He “hopes” that the enemy doesn’t return soon. Then, he withholds that same information about the enemy from his family, “hoping” the enemy doesn’t come back. Really??! ROLLING MY EYES. It’s clear the enemy isn’t dead. Geez. Stupid, idiotic characters annoy me, and using stupidity as a plot device is lazy.

Always intrigued by stories about Dragons. This was a bit different twist on a type of dragon in a different environment than most. It was interesting how this story progressed to learn about the differences. I often can relate to main characters that doubt themselves that don't recognize the abilities they do have. Even though they lack confidence they go out of there way to help others. Even putting their own selves in danger to do so. Another characteristic they have caring for their families and other they have learned to care about. That's why I enjoy Jason's character.

I recommend this story wholeheartedly. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review of this book because I love to read and endorse an author's writing I enjoy without revealing to much of the story to not to ruin it for others.

This is a simple story of a young boy who has to take care of his mother and sister. Dragons are a faint memory. But then the plot develops. Good and bad people with dragons. Jason find a young ice dragon. And now we need book two. It sounds like things are going to move a lot faster.

I love fantasy books by D.K. Holmberg. This is an awesome story with gripping narrative, not too slow and I just can't help myself from trying to finish the book in the shortest possible time, hard to put it down once you start reading. Looking forward to reading the next in the series 😊

This was so enthralling that I had my earphones in all day whilst doing my chores. My grandson is fed up of me saying “ pardon ?“
There were good characters and a plot that moved and flowed easily between people and places, with the main character being a family head, but still unsure of his worth. All the characters interact well and naturally, keeping the narrative rolling along at a good pace.
Although the title suggests a saga of dragons I was surprised that my attention had been held for so long without the appearance of a single one. They only appear in a supportive role towards the end of this book, but I am looking forward to meeting them in the future.
This is a book for “ children” of all ages, from 9 to 90
    Don’t miss it.

A good story, but dragged out way too long so it’s a very slow book at times. And there are pieces that are repeated multiple times which drives me nuts, like the number of times Jason mentions how he thinks he sees something out of the corner of his eye, or how he reflects on how the Dragon Souls don’t sink into the snow, or dwells on dragon skin clothing or whether he can trust the people he has fallen in with. All of which is a shame as the actual story is entertaining & you get impatient for it to progress to actually finding out whether the ice dragon exists, or if Therin is the reformed soul he seems to be, or the evil man he’s described as. And the background setting of extremely inhospitable snow & ice is somewhat novel & you really get a sense of what it would be like to be there. So although the book had some frustrating aspects, I felt compelled to read to the end & hope the 2nd book has more momentum.
