"[A] mordant debut novel....examines what it means to covet the lives of others, no matter the cost."—The New York Times
"Tense, twisty, and packed with shocks."—Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of Survive The Night
Six friends.
One college reunion.
One unsolved murder.
Ten years after graduation, Jessica Miller has planned her triumphant return to her southern, elite Duquette University, down to the envious whispers that are sure to follow in her wake. Everyone is going to see the girl she wants them to see—confident, beautiful, indifferent. Not the girl she was when she left campus, back when Heather Shelby's murder fractured everything, including the tight bond linking the six friends she'd been closest to since freshman year.
But not everyone is ready to move on. Not everyone left Duquette ten years ago, and not everyone can let Heather's murder go unsolved. Someone is determined to trap the real killer, to make the guilty pay. When the six friends are reunited, they will be forced to confront what happened that night—and the years' worth of secrets each of them would do anything to keep hidden.
Told in racing dual timelines, with a dark campus setting and a darker look at friendship, love, obsession, and ambition, In My Dreams I Hold A Knife is an addictive, propulsive read you won't be able to put down.
"Beautiful writing, juicy secrets, complex female characters, and drumbeat suspense—what more could you want from a debut thriller?"—Andrea Bartz, author of Reese's Book Club pick We Were Never Here

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt's almost safe to say that if there was a death, bad blood, or some kind of horrible event in the past, a reunion of any kind just isn't advisable. It's been 10 years, and Uquette University is hosting a reunion weekend, so of course, the East House Seven; well, Six will be in attendance. 10 years ago, the seventh member, Heather, was stabbed to death, and her brother, Eric, wants to know who's responsible, and the reunion seems to be the perfect time to find out. One thing he's certain of is that one of the East House Six members killed Heather, and he's going to find out who.

For a while, it was quite comforting, perhaps strangely so given the genre, to always have this book to return to to break up what I was otherwise doing, especially amidst finals. I relished in being part of this world that tilted slightly, dangerously, on its axis, drawing suspicion towards every character by the end. With the thought that each was imperfect, damaged, and at most turns messy, but definitely, undeniably, twistingly human. Author Ashley Winstead just does it right. She exacts from each character turmoil and powerfully unearths the shameful, ugly parts that they desperately wish to keep hidden from others. There were also little, surprising undertones of dark humor woven in, which only strengthened the story and made me just unabashedly feel and feel deeply and pensively.
“But in a flash, a vision of torn blond hair, sticky and red, matted against white sheets. I shook my head, pushing away the glitch.”
Now, for the actual story: Jessica Miller, the narrator, breathlessly, urgently craves perfection, always has since college where she meets and becomes part of the coveted East House Seven, which includes herself, Mint, Caro, Frankie, Coop, Heather, and Jack. With each of her new friends, she feels all at once armed with a different sense of belonging and place, but also views them as prizes to shamelessly show off, her association to them further cementing her level of status and prestige, both of which she is relentlessly, addictively after and always yearning for. However, of all of Jessica’s friends, I had a soft spot for Coop, who was filled with grit, original, no-nonsense, and all about knocking the Greek system and its toxic exclusivity. I loved every inch of him for that. However, regardless of his words of wisdom to Jessica to forget markers of status and focus, instead, on loosening up and enjoying more, she can’t help herself, she is primed, by other factors and most rigorously herself, toward becoming something greater than what she believes she is.
“He took my face in his hands and looked me in the eyes. How terrifying, to be truly looked at.”
So, regardless of reason, does Jessica’s obsession for perfection eventually go to her head and get the better of her? Do one of her friends have a vengeful, dark side they may be covering up? All these questions barge to the forefront as Heather is brutally murdered and the case eventually goes cold, with evidence, but not enough, pointing to Jack, her college boyfriend, being the main suspect. However, don’t you know, that he must be too simple, the low-hanging fruit for the real perpetrator to frame. Hence in using an effective flashing between present and past approach, Winstead puts all these characters, now called back in modern day for a college reunion, right on center stage, as each feels the heat in new and pressing ways to confess to how they could be related to the crime on that fateful, terrifying night. I loved every minute of this richly fleshed out story as doom and elitism clashed in new and interesting ways that pierced through me and held me captive.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified Purchase3.5/5 ⭐️ I read this book pretty quick as it kept me wondering who did it, although most of the characters aren’t the most likable it was still really fun and interesting to learn about there lives and where they ended up, the reveal was exciting and wrapped up the mystery well.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJessica Miller reunites with her old college friends for a Homecoming reunion. She will spend time with her best friend Caro, reacquaint herself with the guys in the group, including the two loves of her life: Mint and Coop, two men who are as different as can be. She also gets to spend time with her archenemy Courtney, who is now married to Mint. Jessica is bummed that Jack, a former member of the clique, won’t be there. He’s been cast aside for good, even as she remained secretly friends with him. But none of that matters. Jessica is not the girl she once was in college. She’s no longer the unseen brown-haired girl, who was bypassed by the likes of Heather. Jessica is now successful, blonde and confident. If only Heather could see her now!
But Heather won’t be there. She was murdered during Homecoming, a dark mark in the group’s past. They hope to leave it all behind and have a good time. Perhaps — if possible — reminisce on the good times while ignoring the terrible ones. But the past won’t rest. Someone wants to uncover the truth, and not a single person in this group has something to hide. One of them may even be the murder. Let’s just hope Jessica won’t be the center of attention for all the wrong reasons...
I love thrillers about college friends reuniting and reconnecting. Any book about old friends meeting again is a must-read to me. IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE is one of the most entertaining ones I’ve read in a long time. I haven’t enjoyed an atmospheric mystery this much since THE GUEST LIST. This has all the elements to keep you turning the pages (or in my case, tapping the screen). It keeps you guessing throughout, and even though I was able to figure some of it out (or at least suspected the outcome), it still kept my interest. This book is a cross between LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE (the upcoming film version, now in post-prod, is a must, for I’m an “insider”) and IN A DARK, DARK WOOD. I’d say that this is all the things the latter book tried to be but wasn’t. Downsides? There were some loose ends the author overlooked, but I won’t unpack those here. Great read! You cannot miss this. It gets four out of five four-spice hot coffees with latte nut milk (my specialty)!

4.0 out of 5 stars *** 4 STARS***
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWent between e-book & audio but mostly e-book.
This kind of book is hard to navigate a review for especially being a murder mystery. So, in part there's possibly going to be spoilers.
“It was my secret shame: I wanted, I wanted, I wanted”
Firstly, as a person who reads mostly romance books and needs to like the Main Characters I had to switch off from that because it's a very different dynamic.
Jessica is our narrator - the Main Character in a sense but we get to know the other Main Characters too as they are all connected.
Jessica is obsessed with perfection. She's obsessed with being the very thing she apparently raged against. I disliked her and that dislike turned to hatred. She's unlikable. I thought she was psychopathic the more we get to know her and her obsession with goodness. From the second we meet her - even a decade out from leaving college behind her - she is driven by being the centre of everyones attention. Even the whole reunion for her is about being *seen*. If morals are knocking at the the door she's not answering. I'm not sure anything will ever be enough. For me she is absolutely unlikable, she's not the only one by a long shot but she's the narrator essentially so it's heightened. But I never wanted to stop reading this story. It was a frustration with the characters but not on the level where I was hating the story, I needed to know how it all unfolded.
This story is essentially an unravelling of secrets from a supposedly tight knit group of people who were tied together by their first meeting and then when one of their friends was murdered and the killer is among them. I wouldn't call it a direct comparison but as I've watched Pretty Little Liars I can't help but compare it in genre - the murder, the secrets, the lies, the unravelling of it all and a group of friends who's friendship is questionable when you look deeper.
“Today, something starts that will never end.”
Once this story gets going at the reunion, it gripped me. My adrenaline was ramped up. The past and present chapters really worked at building that tension. These characters are messy and once you completely go with it, it's thrilling. Again, if we take out the murder part for a sec - one half of this group of people are truly psychotic. It's not even grand things, it's in the little things, in the mess and in the calm it's like "oh ok. So you're clearly a whole red flag." The other half I think are still messed up and my introverted self will stay over here thanks, but there's definitely different variations of their messed up.
Hello, I would like to introduce you all to this thing called therapy.
As far as the murder mystery part goes. I'm not going to lie and say I figured it out because I didn't. I hardly ever do. I'm absolutely that person who thinks it's everybody whenever something new comes to light. I do, though, believe any single one of them was capable of it. Because all of them were protective of their secrets and most of them needed to belong to the group and did not want to be pushed out. However there's a *plot twist* in regards to the murder which yes, I figured out.
I was hooked and couldn't stop reading. The story completely had me in its grip. It was well on its way to being 5 stars for me, like I said I was hooked. However, in a sense there's two happily ever afters here, or perhaps , two stories of justice here. One I was glad for. However that second happily ever after? Which essentially is a love story, in a weird way. I hated it with every fibre of my being. Even the staunch romance reader in me was like noooooooope. I hated it. And so, in that, I don't think justice was delivered on that level even though it was delivered in the other sense.
And even though I probably shouldn't, there's part of me that wants to know more from these characters. I want to know what now? For all of them really, but specifically where Caro, Frankie and Jack are concerned. There's parts of their stories that I want to dig deeper into and even some secondary characters who had a role but not enough of one. Essentially, it comes down to the fact that there's so much left unsaid and untouched and the neeeeeed to know is why I don't read these kind of books often because I don't like the open ended stuff lol.
This story has consumed me though. I feel like I truly know these characters. I'm gonna miss them in a weird way. Most of them anyway. It was a thrilling, frustrating, exciting, infuriating, adrenaline fuelled ride. No hero's in sight. Messy, flawed characters only.
But... What now?!
Anyways, maybe I'll go watch Pretty Little Liars messy drama again lol.
Also I'll be pretty surprised if this book isn't turned into a TV show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great academic thriller
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis was one of my most anticipated reads of this year. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it after seeing some bookstas raving enthusiastically about it.
I have to say that I was not disappointed.
If you love academic thrillers, you can't miss out on this one.
I loved the dual timeline which is very well done in this book as we follow the reunion of former college friends (minus a dead one) today and the story of what really happened ten years ago.
First of all thank you @mariesembar for buddy reading this with me and explaining everything I needed to know about sororities and US colleges. I would have been lost without you.
We follow Jessica Miller who is determined to steal the show from everyone at her reunion with her once closest friends at the elite Duquette University. Today she is a successful woman, well dressed and nothing like the lost girl she once was when her roommate Heather was murdered and her life sealed forever.
At the time, everyone was sure that Jack, Heather's boyfriend, was responsible for the murder, but the police could never find any evidence. When the group is unexpectedly confronted by Eric, Heather's brother, who is still looking for answers, it quickly becomes clear that each of them had the means and motives to kill poor Heather. So, if Jack is innocent, what really happened that night?
I wouldn't classify it as a locked-room mystery, but even without Eric's accusations, it's clear from the start that one of these 7 people must be Heather's killer. Trying to figure out who is telling the truth and who is weaving a lie is what sucks the reader in.
I couldn't quite give it 5 stars because the characters' voices seemed very childish to me. Even though they were now in their thirties, their voices and behaviour felt more like that of a teenager.
But a part from that, this was a solid thriller which I can only recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than your average thriller
Look, I love a thriller. Most of them are entertaining, even if they’re not good. Even the good ones are usually just okay. But I was impressed with this one! It actually has character development, it wasn’t 100% obvious what happened the whole time, and it kept me wanting to read it. Now, was this obviously the proof of concept for a Netflix miniseries? I don’t have any proof but it sure seems like it. But if it does end up on TV, the miniseries will be very good. One of the better thrillers I’ve read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping mystery
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed the story. It was a little difficult to immerse myself in the beginning, because the first chapters were only about elaborate introductions to the characters and how they were as people. The actual story started quite later in the book and once I reached that part, I was in for a ride and the story grasped me in.
As much as I enjoyed the story, I really disliked the narrator. She was: shallow and materialistic, selfsih and a narcissit, petty and vain and oh-so-ego-driven. I get that there are a lot of people out-there-myself included- that are overachievers, but I have never such deep emotions warring within them that they wish for their best friends to die, just because they always have it easy. I think it is necessary to appreciate and be a part of ones achievements (especially ones you claim to care about), even when you long to achieve the very same goals. That being said, the rest of the group -the other 6 members- were no less in vain. Ugh, each and everyone of them was selfish and petty. They call themselves a band of best friends who couldn't stand each other in secret. Not one character was good enough to relate to them. But I liked Coop most of all, because at least he was one person, who openly told and showed he was not all that good to begin with. He never once sugarcoated or adapted himself to be anything other than 100% himself, unlike the rest of them. I especially hated Heather and Mint.
Anyway, me feeling all these emotions only mean that the author did a fantastic job in writing her characters so well, to make me as a reader feel revulsion towards them. I look forward to reading more stories and plot twists from this author. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars You’ll Never See It Coming
This isn’t my usual type of book, but after reading her first book ‘This Book Will Bury Me’ I decided to put both feet in the water & see how it went, & it went swimmingly well.
There’s so much, & I really mean SO much in this book that readers will see in themselves, & that’s perhaps her perfect gift, relatability, because underneath it all, we’re the same…
We are needing, craving, & willing to walk over hot coals to reach what we desire, & our need desires above all else, are the exact same thing, no matter how good looking you are? You still see the faults, no matter how many friends you have, you’ll see the ones that are missing, how much money you have, you want more, & more until that bucket overflows.
As for anything else, I’ll leave it as this… you’ll never EVER see it coming, not until the final page…
