The New Gobi desert is a dangerous place. The only way to cross safely is with guided caravans using genetically engineered slaves called cynta, creatures designed to sense the dangers of the desert. About the Author

Nikki started writing her first novel at the age of 12, which she still has tucked in a briefcase in her home office. She now lives in the magnificent Pacific Northwest tending to her sweet horse, two manipulative cats, and a crazy dog. She feeds her imagination by sitting on the ocean in her kayak gazing out across the never-ending water or hanging from a rope in a cave, embraced by darkness and the sound of dripping water. She finds peace through practicing iaido or shooting her longbow.

I don't often read short stories that affect me to the point where they stay inside me, coming back at odd times to remind me of....something, many things. That's usually the role of novels in my reading experience. This book, In Silence Waiting, has become one of my favorite stories ever. The setting is bleak and beautiful and fully imagined by the author. Her depth of creative empathy for the people/creatures called the Cynta is superb. A fascinating story, somewhat science fiction, excellent characters. It was so easy to just fall into this world. Nikki McCormack does an outstanding job of bringing all aspects of this world to life. The very second I was done reading the book, I wanted more, still do!

Outstanding! A surprise find for me, and I wil be looking to read more by Nikki McCormack. An interesting story of the best and the worst of humankind. One of the big questions of this day is what is our 'advanced' knowledge creating, and once created, can we control it like we think we want to? The short story poses these questions well.

Having read (and loved) her novel "The Girl and the Clockwork Cat", I was kind of expecting this to be a Steampunk themed story. It's straight-up science fiction in the most wonderful way. Speculative, exploratory, and beautifully written. The story resonates with classic themes and a compelling narrative, and you find yourself immersed from the first paragraph.
I finished the story all too quickly, and I want to know more about the cynta, their world, and about the humans they've been created - and subsequently enslaved - by.
I truly hope Ms. McCormack either expands this story into a novel, or at least explores this world more: she has given a small glimpse into another world that leaves me wanting to see much, much more.
