A job he doesn’t deserve.
A secret he’s ashamed of.
But life’s dance can make for unexpected partners, and learning to trust and keep up with the footwork is the name of the game.
Two steps forward, one step back.
It takes two to tango.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2022I discovered Ms. Hogan via an Amazon reviewer last year and promptly finished her entire backlist on Kindle Unlimited. I appreciate Ms. Hogan’s strong character driven romances, unique backgrounds, the absence of same rinse-repeat character and plot lines so common in romances (especially Kindle Unlimited MM romances), and the believable HEAs shown to be earned by the characters because they truly worked at it. I also appreciate her judgment regarding how much heat and sexy times to include with each novel to show the connection and passion shared by her characters; her novels don’t cause me to roll my eyes while reading those one-too-many-ridiculous sex scenes common in too many romance novels. Even though I have read all of her novels via KU, I have returned to buy two of her series, including Painted Bay. In fact for In Step I went ahead and purchased it without bothering to read it first via KU as I felt that certain about Ms. Hogan’s ability to write another wonderful MM love story. I normally steer away from romance novels featuring a former bully and their victim. My trust in Ms. Hogan’s writing was the only reason I took that leap of faith to auto buy Kane’s story. I just finished reading this and I am still feeling the buzz in my chest—that indescribable feeling that comes with having finished a romance novel full of authentic feels—warmth, joy, pain, strength, tears, laughter, heat, love, and redemption. Thank you, Ms. Hogan, for offering me (yet again) many of hours of escape into another lovely and believable romance. For those of you who are thinking of reading this book but who haven’t read Off Balance (book 1), stop and read that first. You will get so much more out of this story if you read the series in order. If you did enjoy this novel but you read it via KU, please consider buying a copy (if you can afford it) to support self-published authors like Ms. Hogan. I want authors like her to have the means to continue to share their craft for years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2022I love this series. I’ve read a few books in other series by the author and they’re nice but this series is a real gem. Judah and Morgan set the bar high with the wonderful Off Balance, a regular re-read book for me, then cemented the status as a must read series with On Board. Now it’s been followed up by the mature narrative of In Step.
Kane Martin was in both books preceding In Step but in a minor capacity. In book 1, trying to apologise for his teenage bullying of Judah. Something Judah wouldn’t accept. In book 2 when Cora Madden, Judah and Leroy’s mum, organised for him to work on their family mussel farm and to live in a bedsit on their property, much to Judah and Leroy’s astonishment. Bit by bit Kane has proved himself to be a reliable worker and people have said he’s reformed from his past but Judah is permanently angry, understandable after what happened, and Leroy and his now partner, Fox, don’t want to rock the tenuous but building connection Leroy has with Judah nowadays. The brothers have had to work through their own issues. Which means that Kane works the mussels and stays to himself for the rest of the time. Well, Kane and his kitten Bossy, and his rescue rabbit… and Tank, another cat with problems. No family get togethers for Kane. No Sunday lunches with the Madden’s growing family and friends. Nobody who seems to care or, worse still, nobody who doesn’t know what he did to Judah years ago. The town is claustrophobic to Kane because of his past.
'I kept shaking my head. “You don’t understand. Did they tell you about me? About what I did?” I eyeballed him, daring him to lie, and from the pause before he answered, I knew somebody had. And I wanted to f@cking cry. As long as I lived in Painted Bay, I would always be that guy.'
Abe, who knows Judah Madden because of ballet, is new to Painted Bay. He's temporarily in town to help with a dance concert for Judah's students. He doesn't know about Kane, other than he's a cute, shy, kind man who lives in the Madden's bedsit. He also learns that Kane knows swing music that Abe sometimes dances to. So dance, which I love, two easy to love and cheer for MCs, which I also love, and a beautiful New Zealand setting all combine to make this a gem of a book by Hogan. I cannot recommend this series highly enough to gay romance readers, or those interested in dipping their toe into the genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2022Love Jay Hogan, and once again she made me laugh and made me cry. This series has been wonderful with a palpable sense of place and cast of recurring characters. Kane's story was heartbreaking at times but the romance was scorching and the romance was delightful.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2025In Step, Painted Bay Book 3, by Jay Hogan brought me to tears. The beautiful story of Kane, a 30 yr old man, still in the closet and somewhat ostracized by friends for the homophobic actions of his past, and Abe, a nomadic choreographer with a string of unfulfilling "relationships" in his past.
As Abe begins teaching Kane to tango, they begin to fall in love, and the rest is a lovely story of redemption, reunion, and realization of personal truths.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars are not enough for this story!!
This book brought me to tears, more than one time! The writing style - often so poetic and unique - made my mind and soul fly and made me more than happy!
The story arc was and is slow enough to be realistic and I am especially grateful that it shows that an open communication can do wonder with all parties involved after all and that the author gave the parties involved the courage to do it instead of more drama.
This story is also a declaration of love for the Tango and some introduction to its nature and allure.
This last part of the Painted Bay Series is my favourite and brings some conclusions and developments for all former main protagonist.
I will probably reread this book again because it showed that you can overcome
more obstacles than you think in your life.
The describtion of the scenery and nature is detailed and so vivid that my wish to travel one day to Nea Zealands was refreshed and augmented.
Read with the kindle unlimited flat and these all my very own impressions. I can recommend to start with book one in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking...
I've waited quite a few months to read this sequel, knowing it would be a fasten your seatbelt rollercoaster that I wasn't quite ready for... Jay Hogan: you did not disappoint! Never saw that curveball coming... An exceptional and emotionally intelligent love story. Another piece of my heart stolen ❤

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story here folks
Quintessentially Kiwi vibe and a memorable love story covers off enough angsty issues to provide a basis several novels. Love and life collide in a coastal village and find their improbable resolution in dance. The author's skill with language brings to life an impossibly romantic tango which is the foundation for all that follows, leading (despite career issues and distance) to a satisfying HEA ending. One of the very best stories I have read in the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written and enjoyable read
It is so nice to read a book without grammatical errors or spelling mistakes and one with a realistic story to tell. I could picture the characters and the places as if I had been there myself. Well worth the time to read.
