Review
"I have only recently discovered Kira and her work, but in a short space of time have read a lot of her books, and was very excited about being able to read an arc of this title, Into the Darkness. I can honestly say I absolutely loved this book, I didn't put it down at all and read it all in one sitting, I don't want to give any spoilers but was hooked from the start really." - Tina P., Amazon Reviewer

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm a big zombie fan! So when I seen this book come across my recommended books on Amazon I was all there! After the first chapter I was hooked! Kira made me gag, cry, scream and begging for more!! I instantly fell in love with Ike and Cullen then later on Phoenix! The way Kira writes her characters they feel like you are a part of them. I could easily put myself in Phoenix's shoes and imagine I was her. That's how real they felt to me! There's gore, romance, sadness and betrayal! Kira Adams done it again! Great job! I can't wait for Emerging From Darkness!

I got this free on Amazon for a limited time and I would like to thank the author for making that possible. So here's my honest review...
It was fast paced and a page turner. Even though this is another zombie/apocalyptic story, we have characters from different walks of life who banded together to survive.
Initially there's Ike from the US government, then Phonix, a random rebellious girl who later finds out she's adopted, Rian, Phoenix's sister, and other characters we meet along the way. There's a sudden outbreak and the story stems from there. It's the government's actions that came to bite them in the ass.
I admire the concept and zombies, or their term, "biters" aren't the only enemy. There were also the Denegerates (yes, spelled with a capital D), whom are former prisoners trying to take over the world (the US).
Said prisoners were released in the hopes that they could be infected and eventually perish; unfortunately they're smart and could survive so Phoenix and the gang needed to stay away from them as well.
So I was wondering why Ike and Phoenix didn't arm in any way at least one or two of the Degenerates. I mean come on! Didn't they have weapons?! I just felt that it's stupid to just let them loot and get away cause its a dog eat dog world in those trying times.
Due to certain events, Phoenix has become reckless and stupid. Specially when she really wasn't in the proper condition to drive and she insisted. She made out to be a super girl in this novel after surviving the outbreak, being a natural at swords and other weapons, and most importantly being immune to the bite. I gotta warn you folks that this one has a cliffhanger.
The writing style was simple and concise, so it was easy to finish. The action scenes weren't quite polished, there's a potential romance between Phoenix and another guy which felt forced, just to give some romance at a time of war, something to that effect.
For those looking for a more exciting read similar to this genre, I highly recommend Jonathan Maberry.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWe meet Phoenix Blue as she’s headed out on a date. It was a blind date, there is an early curfew due to an outbreak of epic proportions, but she’s a rebel. Her date wasn’t her usual fanfare, but she didn’t care. The next day she went home and all kinds had broken loose. She meets up with Ike, who was at the facility that was showing the virus, when it broke out and spread like wildfire. They pick up Harlan and Jerrica and Cullen along the way.
There’s so much more than I’m going to go into here. Needless to say that our little group has something special that many want to get their hands on and they will stop at nothing to get their hands on it.
I liked the story well enough. My problem with it is the pacing. It’s pretty choppy for me and sometimes a character that’s with them isn’t mentioned for several chapters. This makes me wonder if they’re still with them or if they’d died or whatever, and suddenly their there again. Otherwise, the story is good and has lots of promise.
This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Adams. I’ve heard about several of her others being tear-jerkers and I’m not a fan of springing leaks. I am glad to say that this one doesn’t invite tears, however, so if you’re like me, this is a boon for you too!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFun, fast read can read in one day if you have the time. I easily had the desire to do just that. The characters have mistakes they have made and the desire to be better now and survive. I like the character development there are points that maybe could have been more detailed like Phoenix background story. It was still very easy to connect to the characters. It has one major twist in this installment which leaves the series open to more. I for one can't wait to read more.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell written book, and amazing characters. I can almost see the characters in my head. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
The reason I'm giving this a 4 star instead of 5 is the number of times I saw things like "Cullen and me", or "Rian and me". It Should be "Cullen and I", "Rian and I", etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was so very different from anything I have read by Kira so far! It was also my first zombie book so I was a tad hesitant on how much I was going to like it but I have loved every other other Kira Adams book I have read so far so I gave it a shot! I wasn't disappointed at all! Lots of twists to keep me on the edge of my seat, starting the second book in the series now :)

5.0 out of 5 stars I freaking love zombies !!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOk ! Wow ! Bloody Hell Lady !
So this took me by surprise BIG time . I've just read Kira's other books including her latest (yet to go live ), A Date With The Devil and was prepared for what I thought would be maybe another dark story maybe covering another tough subject but what I wasn't expecting was freaking ZOMBIES ! I love zombies , I mean , really love zombies ! I don't read other reviews or the synopsis's , I don't what to be swayed by other reviewers opinions , I go by the author's other books so yes it took me a chapter or two to realise that this is not you average love story . After chapter two I decided to start again from the beginning because I hadn't really taken notice of what happening and it just wasn't making much sense .
OMG ! I am so glad I started again because this was just a brilliant read . The characters are awesome , there are plenty of twist and turns to keep you glued to the pages and before you know it your at the end screaming " NOOOOOOOOO" ! Cliff hangers lol , you gotta love those cliff hangers , so that's where I am right now , just about to jump into #2 but before I go I've just got to say , Kira has done it again ! A complete change from her other books and I'm truly speechless at how Kira can jumped from one to the other and make it seem effortless .
Well done Kira , this is yet again another hit !!

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed Into The Darkness. Right from the very first page you are thrust into the action. It's a fairly fast paced book with a lot happening in the 185 pages and even a few twists along the way. It wasn't bored at all whilst reading. The story is told mainly through Phoenix, however there are also chapters where the narration shifts to Ike or Cullen. This means that you really get a better insight into each of the characters. They are also all fairly likeable.
Phoenix (I keep wanting to type Phoebe for some reason) goes through a lot in the first few chapters alone. First her family turn into zombies and try to eat her (leading to her killing her dad and brother). Then she finds out she was adopted. She is a very kick-ass character and travels through various US states (I'm not good at US geography - hell, I'm not very good at UK geography to be honest) fighting zombies and degenerates (released prisoners) to find her sister. She is very protective of her sister, probably because there is such a big age gap between them. I also like how Adams doesn't rely to much on Phoenix's love life and the subsequent love triangle that begins to form. However, she can be quite heartless - she leaves her uncle to the mercy of her zombie mum. She is also quite cruel to Harlan. Harlan is one of the characters I felt sorry for. He clearly likes Phoenix yet she barely gives him the time of day because he isn't her usual type. However, she did start to thaw towards him. I just wanted a happy ending for Harlan!
However, Ike's the character I feel the most sorry for. He witnesses not only the beginning of the zombie apocalypse but also his wife and little girl becoming zombies too. That must have totally destroyed him inside to see his little girl turn into something so horrifying. I feel that Ike just wants to survive and see the world put to rights again. Although of course he can also be quite sneaky.
I feel that Cullen is the character we know least about. Mainly because there aren't many chapters from his viewpoint. I hope we learn more about him in the sequel.
Oh! and the cliffhanger! God I couldn't believe it! I just wanted to keep on reading! I can't wait to read the sequel now.
One downside (which is literally teeny-tiny) is that in a couple of places there was missing punctuation. However, that can be fixed and it didn't detract from the story at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Into the Darkness has a good plot with a few interesting ideas
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have given it 4 stars.
A story about zombies is an instant winner in my eyes!!
I thought it would a run of the mill Zombie book but I was wrong. Think The walking Dead meets Z Nation.
Into the Darkness has a good plot with a few interesting ideas, the opening to the book really hooks you in and draws you right into the action. It's less about the biters and more about six people's fight for survival in a world drastically changed when an unknown virus breaks out and brings the dead back to life. Phoenix and her fellow survivors face a tough fight if they want to fight not only against the biters but also against the "degenerates", people who were freed from prisons, in order to use the space to try and contain the virus.
There a few enjoyable characters and few less than enjoyable. The story itself is pretty good, with a few plot twists to keep things interesting. It's fast paced but therein lies the issue for me. I felt it wasn't very detailed, lacking any meat to the actual story itself. I would have preferred something a little more indepth and some parts felt a little rushed.
Overall though I really enjoyed it and I am always intrigued to see which direction these zombie stories take, so I will definitely be picking up the next book.
Be warned though, this book ends on a cliffhanger and I can not wait to see what happens.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed - not what I was expecting
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was disappointed by this novel, for a number a reasons. Firstly I was not expecting a zombie novel, from the ‘blurb’ I was expecting a viral pandemic / dystopian thriller but what I got was a zombie novel. I have nothing against zombie novels and indeed do enjoy them it’s just disappointing to expect one thing and get another.
It was very difficult to read. The first two chapters introduce us to Ike and Phoenix and both of these chapters are written in the first person with Ike and Phoenix both being referred to us I. A little way into the story they meet and then Phoenix is I and Ike wasn’t and I found it very difficult to work out who was saying /doing what as I had got used to both of them being in the first person and now one was in the third person.
In addition the early stages of plot were to my mind confusing and not at all joined up and the characterisation and interaction was poor. For example we are introduced to Phoenix as a someone who is sneaking out of her parents house to hook up with a blind date with the sole intention of getting so drunk that she can have sex with the date but not remember any of it. Then as the outbreak starts she becomes as a relatively calm survivor who (despite the hangover and linger affects of the night before) knows how to defend herself and survive. I am all for fictional suspension of disbelieve but this was too much, it was time to close the book and start something else.
I am sure that the book will appeal to others as I think there was a good story in there fighting to get out, it just wasn’t for me.
