Kamila Knows Best Paperback – March 8, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Kamila's life might not be perfect, but, whew, it’s close. She lives a life of comfort, filled with her elaborate Bollywood movie parties, a dog with more Instagram followers than most reality stars, a job she loves, and an endless array of friends who clearly need her help finding love. In fact, Kamila is so busy with her friends’ love lives, she’s hardly given any thought to her own . . .
Fortunately, Kamila has Rohan. A longtime friend of the family, he’s hugely successful, with the deliciously lean, firm body of a rock climber. Only lately, Kamila’s “harmless flirting” with Rohan is making her insides do a little bhangra dance.
But between planning the local shelter’s puppy prom, throwing a huge work event, and proving to everyone that she’s got it all figured out, Kamila isn’t letting herself get distracted—until her secret nemesis returns to town with an eye for Rohan. Suddenly, it seems like the more Kamila tries to plan, the more things are starting to unravel—and her perfectly ordered life is about to be turned upside down.

Fun South Indian Emma Retelling

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseKamila is fun, glamorous, and appears to have it all. She spends her time helping others and doing charity work. It doesn't leave much time to focus on herself. She finds herself attracted to her brother-in-law and long-time friend, Rohan, and she's unsure of how he feels about her. Plus, her childhood nemesis is back in town and seems to be interested in Rohan. Her seemingly perfect world is turning upside down.
I adored this Bollywoodesque Emma retelling. I loved Kamila, her love interest, and her friends. Besides parties and pretty clothes, Kamila enjoys helping others, matchmaking, and dogs. Rohan is never far from Kamila's side and is always there to support her. The moment I thought Rohan was too perfect, we got to see his less-than-perfect side, and that made him even more loveable. Asha stands out among Kamila's wonderful circle of close friends. Kamila has the best bestie; everyone needs someone like Asha as their best friend.
And the food! Kamila's weekly Bollywood movie night parties with the descriptions of delicious dishes will leave you hungry for Indian food.
Despite the lighthearted nature of this story, some serious issues are addressed, such as mental health, emotional abuse, and misogyny at work. Heron makes her points in a manner that doesn't detract from the fun, easy-going nature of the story.
Kamila Knows Best is a delightful, slow-burn, feel-good romance that will leave you with a smile!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought this was delightful, a sort of desi version of Emma. I loved the characters and really appreciated all the doggie stuff. (Many of the characters are dog lovers and volunteer at the animal shelter.)
I like that we see a desi character who is not the stereotypical driven to succeed person we typically get. She actually is driven to succeed but does so on her own terms and with her own style. And oh, what a fabulous style she has!
Growing up as the black sheep in her family, she is a fashion template for the TikTok generation rather than the traditional Vogue sort. I loved reading the descriptions of her fabulous outfits. And I wanted to cuddle the dogs, Darcy and Potato.
This is a feel-good read, perfect for a cold night when you're looking for some warmth. Maybe pair it with some Indian food. Yum!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAuthor Farah Heron has created a world full of complex and colorful characters. Beginning with Kamila Hussain, a modern-day Emma and her Knightley, Rohan Nasser, the remaining cast helps to put an Indian immigrant cultural spin on a familiar story. The major difference between Kam and Jane Austin's Emma is Kamila's history of abuse by her overbearing mother and the scars left on her psyche, as opposed to Emma's tutor's support and love. Like Emma, Kam addresses and analyzes her shortcomings, but with the help of a few years of therapy.
Not only did I love Heron's characters, I also loved her delectable descriptions of food. The evening that Kam and Rohan prepared momos together gave me an appetite for Indian cuisine that I immediately needed to remedy. With leftover momos in the fridge, I recommend this delightful romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2022Format: KindleKamila Knows Best is a modern take on the classic novel, Emma, and an even updated version of the movie Clueless. Kamila is living her best life working as an accountant for a job she loves, volunteering for a local animal charity and hosting weekly Bollywood parties for all her friends. She’s not tied down to any one person and prefers to keep things casual. Her best friend and since childhood friend, Rohan is a giant help to her with her father, who has been struggling with his health.
One day she see Rohan flirting with another of their friends and she thinks maybe there could be more to her friendship with Rohan? Rohan has been there through everything, all the good and bad. He knows all about her family history and
I absolutely loved Accidentally Engaged by this author and that was 5 stars for me. Kamila was missing some of this magic. I didn’t really enjoy Kamila- she seemed immature despite caring for her elderly father. She didn’t understand that people may see things differently than her and that maybe she doesn’t always know best.
I do love that she was very compassionate about other people and for animals. She truly did try to put out positivity into the world. I loved how Rohan and Kamila both came to their more than friends conclusion together. The friends to lovers trope worked well with this novel.
I will also say as both of the author’s novels include incredible descriptions of the food. I want to go right now to try all the delicious pakora and biryani!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed Kamila Knows Best! I felt like it had a really compelling plot, and lovable characters, both main and sideline. One thing I do wish, is that there had been a little more spice. I liked the way the slow burn progressed, and that we got a real idea of Rohan’s feelings before Kamila did, but I still would have liked the scene w the sari in the rain to have been a LITTLE hotter, especially since there was so much build up to it. Overall, though, a winner for me!

4.0 out of 5 stars ideal for an evening in
A lovely take on Emma. I don't read much contemporary romance so it's not quite my thing, but top marks for proper female friendships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kamila doesn't know best, but is pretty great anyway
Lovely Emma retelling. I honestly prefer Kamila to Emma (even though it's been a long time since I read the book), she is clueless in some aspects and an accomplished professional at the same time. I love how Farah Heron shows that people are never just one way. Bonus was the recipe, the only thing I missed were coloured illustrations of the outfits 😉.
