Karma's a Killer (A Downward Dog Mystery, 3) Paperback – January 8, 2016

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 110 ratings

When Seattle yoga teacher Kate Davidson agrees to teach doga (yoga for dogs) at a fundraiser for a local animal shelter, she believes the only damage will be to her reputation. But a few downward-facing dogs are the least of Kate's problems when an animal rights protest at the event leads to a suspicious fire and a drowning.

The police arrest Dharma, a woman claiming to be Kate's estranged mother, and charge her with murder. To prove Dharma's innocence, Kate, her boyfriend Michael, and her German shepherd sidekick Bella dive deeply into the worlds of animal activism and organizational politics. As they investigate the dangerous obsessions that drive these groups, Kate and her sleuthing team discover that when it comes to murder, there's no place like hOMe.

Book 3 in this series finds yoga teacher Kate Davidson teaching doga (yoga for dogs) at a fundraiser for a local animal shelter. An animal rights protest at the fundraiser leads to a suspicious fire and a drowning. The police arrest Dharma, a woman claiming to be Kate’s estranged mother, and charge her with murder. Kate and Dharma’s relationship is fraught with complications, but Kate just can’t stand to see her suffer, so injects herself into the investigation.

These books just keep getting better and better for me. I really like Kate. Sure she’s a yoga teacher who’s supposed to be all about peace, love, and understanding, but she frequently falls short of the mark. She has a temper, she leaps to conclusions, she keeps secrets, she has a difficult relationship with her mother ... she is, in short, very human, and totally relatable. Plus, her devotion to Bella, her German Shepherd with digestive and behavioral problems, is touching.

For me, this latest is the best in the series. I was able to lose myself in the story and feel like I was right there in Seattle with Kate and Bella. I found myself thinking about what was happening when I wasn’t reading. I like how Kate confronts problems, even when she’d rather sweep them under the rug, and I like that she loses her temper, but takes responsibility for it. And I very much enjoy the relationship between Kate and her very pregnant BFF. It rings true for me. The details of Bella’s illness and the day-to-day operations of Kate’s yoga practice/business are woven seamlessly into the plot, making the story and the characters seem real.

As with most series, I find these are better read in order, because each makes reference to previous books. I think you could read them out of order, however, and not be lost, because the author provides just enough detail to move the story along, without either boring the reader, or making you feel like you’re missing out. I hope there will be more in this series.

Tracy Weber does it again. I was disappointed when Karma’s A Killer ended. I wanted the story to keep going. Every time I read one of Tracy Weber’s books I learn something new! It was intriguing and interesting to learn about birds and their behavior as well as dive deeper in yoga practices and animal behavior.

I enjoyed that Kate’s (the main character) friend, Rene, was featured more in this book. I love how they play off each other. My heart stopped when Kate’s car, with Bella (her dog) was broken into. This was an excellent third book in the Downward Dog Mystery Series. The only problem is now I have to wait for the next book to be published!!

Karma's a Killer by Tracy Weber is the third book in A Downward Dog Mystery series. Kate Davidson owns Serenity Yoga. She has agreed to teach a Doga (yoga with dogs) session at Paws Around Green Lake (her boyfriend organized the event). On her way to teach the class, Kate overhears two women arguing by the lake. Kate eavesdrops and then continues on. Her session does not start off well because one woman brought her pet rabbit (in a room full of dogs). Kate tries to get her to leave, but the woman refuses (states it will be fine). Well, (as you can expect) the dogs take off after the rabbit and chaos reigns. Then someone starts a fire nearby and protestors descend. The proceeds from the event were to go to the local animal shelter DogMa. The protestors are from California and one of them is actually related to Maggie, one of the creators of DogMa. Just when Kate thinks the day cannot get any worse, Dharma (a protestor) comes up to Kate and tells her that she is her mother (that she has not seen in thirty years). The next Raven is found dead by the lake. Raven was on the HEAT protestors (and was arguing before event). Dharma turns out to be the main suspect (with a lot of evidence). Kate sets out to prove her mother’s innocence and find the real killer.

Karma’s a Killer is nonsensical. It drove me crazy. It was over-the-top ridiculous (with one thing after another). There was too much going on in this book. I wanted the focus to be on the murder (the mystery) not on yoga, Bella (Kate’s dog with an EPI condition), birds who steal silver objects, the goat whisperer, Rene (best friend pregnant with twins), Kate’s temper issues, or Tiffany (work with Kate’s boyfriend and Kate feels that Tiffany is trying to steal him away). There was also quite a bit of information on yoga in the book (I had no clue what the author was talking about). I give the book 3 out of 5 stars (it is okay). I was just not the right person for this book. The novel had such a simple mystery (I knew who had done it as soon as they said who was murdered). I think more of the book was devoted to Bella and her condition (along with the special diet she is on) and yoga than to the mystery. The one thing I disliked in the book was the Kate dissed Peeps! She had the nerve to say that they are junk! Can you imagine? The book, though, is nicely written to make it easy to read and enjoy (if you like these types of stories).

I received a complimentary copy of Karma’s a Killer from the author in exchange for an honest review.

It seemed strange reading one of these books out of order since I usually pre-order but sometimes finances don't allow that. Karma's a Killer fits in perfectly with this outstanding series. Even out of order I love watching the development of her relationship with Michael develop and have a blast seeing her and Rene work together. The way Tracy Weber presents animals realistically and still makes lets them win my heart shows how much she loves animals. The fact that she shows respect for even most of the bad guys shows that she loves people even if she may not always like them. Both of those elements are part of what make this series stand out. I really would have loved to see the rabbit lady face a little Karma but the fact that money can offer an unfortunate buffer is a sad but real part of life.

When both murder and Karma come to town, Kate's world is flipped even more than usual. The mystery was strong and believable as always and drew me in from the first moments.
