Ethan Rain is a 20 year-old college freshman and student-athlete on the rolls at Glen Hill College in Vermont. Playing hockey on a scholarship from the college, Ethan is gay, demisexual…and in love with his childhood best friend Casey. Ethan has managed to keep two of his innermost secrets mostly to himself- that he suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and his longing for Casey's return of his affection. Ethan lost his mother in a construction accident 5 years earlier- an accident that also took the life of Casey's beloved father. Connected by the grief the two men have suffered, they have found solace in each other's friendship. But does Ethan dare to act on his deeper feelings and risk destroying a friendship that has taken years to create?

Casey Preston has been in love with Ethan since forever. When his father was killed in a freak construction accident, Ethan was the one who kept him from falling apart. Indeed, the interests sparked in him by his father is the reason that Casey is studying archaeology at the college. Shying away from close and personal binding relationships, Casey has had his fair share of flings on the side, yet nobody could ever make him feel the way he feels when he's with Ethan. The hot hockey player has been his closest friend and confident all of his life, and recently Casey has finally come to grips with his feelings toward his best friend. But does he dare to let Ethan come closer into his life and risk losing him, too?

Keeping Casey is an awesome book filled with a plethora of emotions and feelings. The main characters are so into each other, but Casey and Ethan each have a simple, but slightly differing reason for not wishing to deepen the relationship they have together. It is as if each guy wants the other so badly but can't risk coming clean to the other for fear that everything they've built together up to now will all come crashing down on them. Each man has been forced to grieve a parent's death - one has had to bear the load on his own shoulders, and the other never quite has been able to come to grips with the loss. The character development is SUPERB in this novel! The plot is fabulous, as well. I was so rooting for something good to happen to Casey and Ethan, as they have had to suffer so much familial heartache in the past. The secondary characters in the book are phenomenal, too. Theo, Brant and April especially add a wonderful sense of family, friendship and love to the plot, keeping it interesting as well as helping Casey and Ethan see the beautiful thing that's right before their eyes, if they would just reach out and take it.

This book is marvelously written and vividly imaginative!! One of the best I've read, and is very highly recommended!! 5 stars, most definitely!!

Casey and Ethan have been best friends since forever. They’re a package deal with a long, shared history; even a couple years apart while Ethan pursued his hockey dreams hasn’t made a dent in their unflappable connection. But all of that is about to change during their freshman year of college.

When Ethan’s team captain reacts poorly to his declaration about his sexuality, Casey comes to his rescue, pretending to be boyfriends to prove Ethan’s gay. What’s the harm in helping a friend? Turns out quite a lot as neither realizes all the ways it will test their relationship.

Fake boyfriends is one of my absolute favorite tropes, and this one works on so many levels. Amy Aislin takes it up a notch by adding deliciously angsty friends-to-lovers tension to the mix. She had me in Ethan’s corner from the very first page, waiting and hoping Casey get on board and work through his own feelings. Keeping Casey demonstrates masterful emotional depth and complexity; both Ethan and Casey face past grief, the stress and struggles of college life, as well as their complicated tangle of romantic feelings. The slow burn, angst and anticipation are deliciously done, something I’ve come to expect from Amy Aislin’s books.

Speaking of her previous work, I want to give a shout out to Aislin’s clarity and inclusivity. Readers can find a wide range of characters representing unique sexual and gender identities in M/M romance, and her books are no exception. Her Stick Side series as well as Keeping Casey feature characters who identify as demisexual, but Aislin goes beyond merely mentioning it. She clearly defines what being demi means to the person on the page; rather than sweeping generalizations, she draws the reader into the emotional complexity of their sexual identity, its impact and influence in a way that’s clear and thought-provoking. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate this as a reader.

While Keeping Casey can be read as a standalone, it sits squarely in the Stick Side universe — rubbing elbows with the world of Lighthouse Bay — and for me, the story was enhanced by my prior reading of the Stick Side series. So many of the main characters of that series either pop into the story or are mentioned, and some even have supporting roles. If you’ve enjoyed other books by the author, you’ll fall for Ethan and Casey, who are both very like-able and sweet.

In addition to drawing in fans of hockey romance, this book has something for history nerds like me. Ethan is into hockey and science — and creating little felted animals, and how cute is that?! I related more closely to Casey, whose passions are antiques and archaeology — and his best friend Ethan, of course. Far from boring, Aislin weaves Casey's interests into the story by connecting them to his memories of his father. The story also deals with the serious topic of living with rheumatoid arthritis with Ethan portrayed as a young man who is coping with this chronic disease and making the best of the situation. Also, as is the case with several of Aislin’s books, one of the characters is demi-sexual; by addressing and normalizing his demi-sexuality, she is helping to remove some of the stigma of being on the asexual spectrum.

In the end, Keeping Casey is a sweet, low angst romance with three-dimensional like-able leading men. Two thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, funny and romantic

This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Casey and Ethan are the cutest together and I fell in love with them straight away.
It's not just a friends to lovers plot, this book is so much more. The friendship between the MCs is the type everybody would like to have in their lives. They know each other so well that it's just amazing they hadn't realized their true feelings towards the other. They are so in tune that everybody assumes they are together, which in a way they are (just trust Brant on this one LOL).
I loved their friendship, their moments together were funny but also touching. How they understand and support each other, what they mean to one another... It was beautiful to see that kind of relationship.
I also loved the different subplots in the book, like the homophobia that still nowadays moves around in male sports. Also, how a cronic ilness affects young people and I think it's great that grief is pictured here as something that can be dealt in many different ways.
Like I said, I did love this book from beginning to end. It's sweet, beautiful, moving, funny and romantic. The hot scenes are dealt with in the same loving way and they were perfect.
This book has everything to warm your inside, it's well written and the characters are all wonderful, natural and real. This is a must-read book for everyone and I look forward to reading the next one in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Un friends-to-lovers + fake boyfriends bien mignon mais tout de même un peu plat
Reviewed in France on April 25, 2021

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak
Reviewed in Italy on April 18, 2021
Well, I think I have to give up on this author.
I thought it was going to be a great book to read, and i thought the same for "on the ice"
Both disappointed me, but Keeping Casey disappointed me even more. It's always look le this whenever synopsis give great expectations and the book is rather weak.
Here Ethan and Casey spend the entire book revolving around their feelings for each other, and the fact that Casey always push people away to not get involved.
This concept is told too many times, and I think that I got it the second time it was mentioned.
Their "love story" is nowhere to be found throughout the book, we've been given something almost at the end.
When books are weak, usually there's the steamy part that gives something to relate to, the passion, the spark. The feeling. Here they barely kiss, and suddenly we discover that Ethan is what? Demisexual? He's never been attracted to anyone. But the author doesn't adress it, cause we need to know, again, that Casey need to push him away by leaving him in pain after a bad game.
Maybe I'd have been kinder to this book if I hadn't had to actually pay for it, considering that Amy Aislin is not in Unlimited.
