Kitty: A scandalous tangle in Regency England (The Governess Trilogy Book 3) Kindle Edition
Will Kitty find the happy ending she’s always dreamed of…?
1795, England
Having grown up with her two best friends Prudence and Nell at the Paddington Charitable Seminary for Indigent Young Ladies, Kitty Merrick is now being urged to take up a position as a governess.
However, she is determined to resist the path that has been laid out for her. Convinced that she is the illegitimate daughter of two nobles, Kitty believes she is fated to marry a lord and take her place in Society.
A chance meeting with Claud, Viscount Devenick, quickly throws her life into disarray. Mistaking Kitty for his cousin, he compels her to accompany him home — only to find that she is at the centre of a long-buried family scandal.
Curious about Kitty’s past and keen to upset his cold-hearted mother, Claud asks Kitty to marry him. Enchanted by the prospect of becoming a viscountess, Kitty accepts.
But married life is far from what she expected. With Claud preoccupied and often away from home, Kitty soon grows lonely. And when everyone in Claud’s family refuses to speak of her origins, she begins to despair of ever finding out who she really is…
How is Kitty connected to Claud’s family? Can she find a way to make her marriage work?
Or will she come to regret her hasty elopement…?
KITTY is the third book in the Governess Trilogy: heart-warming Regency romance novels with strong female lead characters.

About the author

Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.
Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.
Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.
Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt's convoluted, to be sure. Lots of names, several families and the ultimate big and scandalous question. Who were the parents?
The main couple are so young. I realize that the they are early twenties but they are young for their age. They've never had to grow up and in this book they have to, are forced to.
For me, the character arc for Kitty was written very well. It's subtle but as she faces her greatest longing and her greatest scandal, she finds her footing and she has some sense. It's just great to read.
Claud is just as Kitty accuses him. Selfish and self centered, with a touch of what we would call ADHD. But he is honest and kind and he tries. I read this in my later years and felt a strong, maternal love for him. His own mother is a beast and his father is an avoider. He's a nice young man and worthy of the Cinderella dreamer he won.
I really enjoyed this and highly recommend you read the whole series because why wouldn't you? It can be read on its own as well.
Highly recommended. Put this in your Kindle unlimited to be read pile ASAP.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have finished all three books of this trilogy in as many days and they are all different and they are all interesting and good stories.
Prue gets the first story and, my goodness, she cannot stay dry when playing with the daughters and therefore gets sick twice! You can imagine that her two charges come to love her and so does their daddy.♥️
Next is Nell’s story and a very intriguing gothic tale it is. Seems to be a mystery - not murder as I first thought, but a mystery unfolds regarding an emerald necklace and the young daughter who knows where it is. If I were younger it might have been spooky to me, but now, a good mystery.
And 3rd, a most confusing tale of Kitty, left at the seminary at 6 years old. She remembers things, but not clearly…and is abducted…accidentally. What a tangled tale! It includes a trip to Gretna Green and an absent minded husband and a huge scandal. Whew!
I do hope you will choose to read these 3 books - they’re great fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA light frothy regency with a mystery at its heart. The characters are believable, and the interaction between the hero & heroine is amusing and sprightly. Very few anachronisms and a satisfying ending. Thankfully no badly written sex. Recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious reworking of a "Cinderella plot"
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseClever storyline based on poor orphan meets rich handsome man scenario. Well drawn characters. I enjoyed the first two books in this series but think this is my favourite.

3.0 out of 5 stars How such good ideas peter out
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt really started off so well but the plot turned complicated in a literary way too. Too much verbiage and no surprise assurance on the way to Gretna green from the rescuing hero. Nothing to grasp the intelligence convincing enough to properly enjoy; even the inclusion of old friends from the past to give a bit of camaraderie became strained and confronting the different relative s that were tangled up in the subterfuge and hysterics of a child born out of wedlock that went on and on, had me turning paragraphs then pages. Resolutions an love conquers all just didn't cut it. Apologies to the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly excellent
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOne of Elizabeth Bailey’s very best. A step up from the first two in this series. An engaging heroine and a flawed but redeemable hero, with a satisfying conclusion.
