L.I.F.E. Paperback – June 23, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Rider Williams is your typical high school student. He has classes, hangs with friends, plays video games, writes for the school paper, plays guitar, collects comics, and is gay. Okay, so he’s not your typical high school student.
Rider is trying to finish his senior year of high school while struggling to accept himself and hide his secret. It’s difficult and he might have succeeded if not for two challenges in his way. The first, an assignment about the one thing he doesn’t understand and hasn’t experienced: love. The other, Cameron Walker, a transfer student who looks like a stereotypical jock, but seems to be so much more.
Can Rider survive the weight of his secret?
It’s only the start of the school year but Rider already knows L.I.F.E. isn’t as easy as it seems.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFelyx Lawson's “L.I.F.E.” is a sweetheart of a YA M/M love story. This is one of my favorite reads of 2021.
After his father's sudden death Cameron Walker's mother moves the two of them from New York City to her native Mississippi town to be near her mother in her unexpected widowhood.
Cameron had been the captain of his New York high school's basketball team. Starting a new school his senior year in the American South would be a challenge. But Cam is determined to not cause any waves for his mother in her time if grief, and to be strong like his father was, and to be as normal a teenager for her as he possibly could be.
Rider Williams is a petite dark-haired scholastic leader and high school newspaper reporter and comic book enthusiast and shy in-his-bedroom only guitar player and singer. He is a self-admitted geek and proud of it. He also is Gay but completely closeted. He’s had no romantic or sexual liaisons and told no one about his feelings.
The school principal assigns Rider to escort Cameron around on the boy’s first day at the new school. Cameron has an athletic build, blond hair and stunning blue eyes. Rider likes the showing-Cam-the-ropes assignment and soon realizes that he likes Cameron. Yes, “like like.”
Cameron is a kind and open soul. He had a girlfriend at his last school and has never had romantic or sexual feelings for a dude.
Cam might be a sports star but he’s also a comic boom geek and quickly comes to adore his new bestie, Rider.
But does Cam “like like” Rider? You’ll have to read this wonderful novel to find out.
Rider is outed at school by a weasely gossip. The basketball cheerleader captain, a bitch of a hottie girl, is on Rider’s case. Rider is assaulted by several homophobic basketball players, teammates of Cameron. I won’t reveal how Cameron reacts to this news.
Lawson has crafted an ensemble of darling characters. There’s Rider’s pal Jane and her boyfriend Sam. There is irresistible Lloyd who gives a hug to Rider every year as a birthday present. It is easy to care about these characters and be smitten by their many charms.
This is a coming out story at its heart. Rider is afraid how his parents will react to the news he is Gay. He’s nervous how his long-time friends will respond. He worries how the school will take it. He mostly frets how Cameron will respond.
As revealed, Cameron is admittedly not Gay. But Rider loves this thoughtful jock who has evolved into his closest friend.
Lawson looks at the issue of coming out from numerous sides. Any young adult who is weighing similar issues will cherish this book.
Lawson tells the story using different voices from chapter to chapter. He handles this skillfully, as every voice is distinct. One character only refers to people by their last names, and this reminds me of the variety of personality types in my high school.
This writer creates strong prose. The pacing is perfect, as is the balance of environmental description and action.
“L.I.F.E” should be your first read of 2022.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt definitely had its cliche moments, most of which I felt worked for the story, others forced me to suspend my disbelief. I did feel there were too many point of view characters that served to just spoon feed readers information, we would have already gotten. The story of Cam and Rider were the heart of it all and the head hopping between characters took us away from their story. I also felt some of the characters were more used as plot devices rather than real characters. All in all, I enjoyed this book and am highly invested in these characters and will be reading the sequels.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLOVE IS FOUND EVERWHERE(L.I.F.E): Wow, what an sensational story to read about. Rider and Cam are the heroes with so much love and truth and vulnerability in them to last eternity. I’m so in awe with the author ability to navigate emotions with sensibility and the ugliness of life. It’s immaculate to experience this world through the eyes of these magnificent teenagers characters. 2 THUMBS WAY UP!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseOk, I'm going to make this brief because I'll be rambling all day about it XD. (So first off get the book) The story takes place with a teenager named Rider Williams as he goes through his last year in high school. Not going to go too much into detail, but this story is so good! The writing makes you feel like your there and has you picture events while reading. I love how smooth the writing is too. Perfect comfort story if you're looking for a slice of life! I know I enjoyed it so what are you waiting for? Have a slice of L.I.F.E. with you and dive into an amazing story!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis being Felix Lawson’s first book I am impressed. It’s a good one, with sweet and very likable main characters. We follow the bumpy road towards them finding out and finding each other. They have great friends who aren’t what you first think but really good friends to have in times of trouble.
Some would probably say it’s a very well used plot and roll their eyes. I however, find it sweet and and heart warming with the occasional frustrating hurdles. Keep up the good writing Felix. I will love spending time with Rider, Cam and the others in a sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI absolutely loved this book. I really connected with rider with being in the closet and not wanting to come out. Only thing is when I came out it was after high school. I didn’t have anyone like Cam and Jane. This book reminded me of another great series that is a graphic novel and now an amazing show on Netflix Heartstopper. Also I love how close Cam and rider became and vulnerable with each other. Can’t wait for the next book to come out.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI don’t write reviews. But these characters just won’t let me go. Felyx Lawson, did such a great job with the character building in this book. Rider can be somewhat dramatic, but I felt his struggles along side him. (And can relate to overthinking everything) Cam is adorable and such a good guy. I enjoyed following his journey in discovering who he is. Sure, there were some grammatical errors, and a few situations that seemed slightly unbelievable. However, that did not take away from the story or book as a whole for me. I laughed, I got angry, and I sobbed with these characters. I was not entirely happy with the ending. It felt a bit rushed and unfinished. I know there is a sequel coming next year (not soon enough!!), but I feel like it could have been wrapped up a bit better. I read this in 2 days, and already cannot wait to reread it when the sequel is released. I highly recommend this book! I wish books like this were available to me when I was growing up and coming to terms with my own sexuality.

even there was a few issues I had with this book but still it didn't put me off. And I can easily say it has been one of the few books I really enjoyed recently.
If you are into YO LGBT literature you will definitely like this book.
