Lady of Misrule: Drama and intrigue at the Tudor court (The Marwood Family Tudor Saga Book 4) Kindle Edition
Has time run out for Queen Catherine of Aragon…?
1528
The mood at court is sombre. The fractures in the royal marriage are spreading and King Henry’s desires are threatening the stability of the realm.
Eighteen-year-old Thomasin Marwood feels aged beyond her years in service to Queen Catherine of Aragon.
Her time as a lady-in-waiting has exposed her to intrigues and dark plots that have cast a shadow over her future.
And now King Henry is becoming more open in his plot to divorce the queen and marry Lady Anne Boleyn.
Queen Catherine has sent for her daughter, Princess Mary to join her at court and remind Henry of his fatherly duties. But Anne Boleyn is always at Henry’s side, resplendent in her lavish gowns, reminding the king of her youth and ability to carry an heir.
Thomasin is loyal to her mistress, Queen Catherine, but she finds herself noticed by the Boleyns and she fears her position at court may soon change.
What will happen to Thomasin if the king is successful in his petition for a divorce? Will Queen Catherine be cast out of court?
And will Lady Anne Boleyn finally get the throne she has been lusting after…?

"A page-turning collage of lives" Times Literary Supplement.
"This insight is so rare and so valuable … a considered and scholarly account of the matriarch of the House of York" (Cecily Neville) Author Philippa Gregory
"Living Like a Tudor deftly recreates the medieval landscape, drawing on the five senses to offer a glimpse of the sights, smells and tastes of 15th- through 17th-century England." Smithsonian Magazine
"A long overdue biography of one of the most dramatic medieval heroines – vivid, very readable, and wonderfully detailed." Author Sarah Gristwood.
"What an artist does with colours on a canvas, Amy Licence does with words on paper." Amazon reviewer Anne Marie Bouchard.
"Amy Licence... is unquestionably the most prolific historian writing today. Her output of books in recent years is incredible, the culmination of a life’s fascination and study of the subject." Historian Nathen Amin.
"In each of Licence's books I've read and reviewed, she reminds me to be careful how I "interpret" the historical people, especially in regards to the era in which they lived. I appreciate Amy bringing my mind back to where it needs to be, to not make hasty judgments, and to take in to account the society, and culture, and unique circumstance in which they lived." Reviewer Annette Hart Kristynik.
"One aspect of Licence’s writing I most appreciate is that she makes it very clear what is fact and what is supposition. I particularly noticed in this biography that she often offered multiple interpretations of various actions, which I thought added depth to her writing." Reviewer Deborah, North Texas
"Amy Licence is one of the best historical writers out there. She is not an apologist, but a responsible historian out to give as much information as she can without imposing her own point of view." Author Carole P Roman
"Amy Licence is a very good writer. She puts you right in the heart of her books. For me, they are unputdownable." Amazon review.
"Licence delves deep into every whispered rumour and innuendo, using solid research to confirm or dismiss each reported fling. Her account is engaging and readable; treading the fine line between popular and academic history with expert precision. Even if you are well-read on the king's many relationships, there are plenty of gems in here that I haven't seen anywhere else!" Author Adrienne Dillard.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHope Thomasin comes to her senses and does better than Cecilia.
Cecilia an absolute, disrespectful disgrace tbh. I am SO hoping Raycroft divorces her and marries Ellen instead. Ellen genuinely loves him.
Anne has way too much audacity as usual and I wish Catherine would do something different that shows she can do just fine without Henry.
Hutton's a loser. And

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have devoured this series, the Marwood family saga by Amy licence. Amy Licence is such a skilled author, she is masterful at setting a scene, and bringing the Tudor court alive. I love the main character, Thomasin. She is intelligent, humble, loyal, and tries to do what is right.
The previous books in this series have been excellent, please read them if you like reading about this time period. This book felt a bit rushed, and it ended abruptly. I have to admit I was disappointed with the ending. I was so hoping for a more complete, slightly more romantic ending, where Thomasin was concerned.
Throughout the book, it kept seeming like something major was going to happen, but nothing really did. Also, I'm still not sure who the Lady of Misrule was, I think I have an idea though. It just wasn't as clear as in the previous novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAmy Licence has a wonderful way of telling a story. She draws you in, gets you invested in the characters, and then takes you through all their worries, fears and agonies.
Lady of Misrule allows the reader to experience what must have been a wonderful tradition - a Tudor Christmas at court. The colours, the music and merriment all add to the dramatic atmosphere of the story.
My only complaint is the book is too short - I was not ready for it to finish quite yet.
