Legionary III: Land of the Sacred Fire Kindle Edition
A tale of adventure and military brotherhood in the legions of Rome
The empire is on its knees, but a last hope lies beyond the eastern frontier . . .
377 AD: Emperor Valens has stripped the Persian frontier of its legions, sending every available man to Thracia in an effort to contain the rampaging Gothic hordes. Now, covetous eyes have fallen upon Rome’s trade-rich but sparsely defended desert provinces. Shapur II, Shahanshah of the Sassanid Empire and his many client kings have long believed Rome’s eastern holdings to be theirs by ancestral right, and those lands have never been more vulnerable. Thus, Valens must grasp at the slimmest of hopes that a Persian invasion can be staved off, not by the brute force of absent legions, but by the tenacity of a hardy few. For in the heart of enemy lands, something thought long lost might just offer salvation.
When Optio Numerius Vitellius Pavo and a select group of the XI Claudia are summoned to the Persian front, they leave Thracia behind, knowing little of what awaits them. They know only that they are to march into a burning land of strange gods. They whisper tales of the mighty Persian Savaran cavalry and pray to Mithras they will see their homes and families again. All too soon it becomes clear to them that this is no ordinary mission – indeed, the very fate of the empire might rest upon their efforts. But for Pavo the burden is weightier still, for he knows that the east also holds something even more precious to him . . . the truth about his father.
Epic Roman fiction, brimming with adventure, battles, blood and gore, from the pen of Gordon Doherty - bestselling author of Rise of Emperors, Strategos, Empires of Bronze and Assassin's Creed.
A perfect read for fans of Bernard Cornwell's Last Kingdom series, Conn Iggulden's Emperor series, Simon Scarrow's Macro and Cato saga, Ben Kane's Forgotten Legion series and SJA Turney's Marius' Mules saga.

About the Author
Gordon's love of history was first kindled by the ruins of Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, and travelling around the ancient world has kept the fire burning brightly ever since. He finds the Late Roman Empire and Byzantine eras intriguing, particularly the metamorphosis from late antiquity into the 'dark ages' and the medieval period. Equally, the Bronze Age and Classical Greece are firm favourites of his.

About the author

Gordon is a Scottish writer, addicted to reading and writing historical fiction. His novels have been Amazon smash-hits, and have gone on to be translated and published in Russia, Italy and Greece.
Gordon's love of history was first kindled by visits to the misty Roman ruins of Britain and the sun-baked antiquities of Turkey and Greece. His expeditions since have taken him all over the world and back and forth through time (metaphorically, at least), allowing him to write tales of the later Roman Empire, Byzantium, Classical Greece and even the distant Bronze Age.

Action, plot twists, great characters all set in the ancient world. The author sets these stories in real places, during real times of strife during the reign of the Roman Empire. Historically accuracy (weapons, persons of interest, battle tactics, etc.) really set the story off and make it seem like this fictional story actually occurred.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI do like Mr. Doherty's writing style, action sequences and attention to a reasonably accurate historical setting. My beef is the sheer over-the-top adventures Pavo and his largely indestructible colleagues find themselves in. This is the third in the trilogy which sees our merry group going through torturous trials of pain and endurance, breathtakingly perilous conflict situations and coming through with their usual mixture of huge coincidence, miraculous good fortune and good old Roman feats of arms.
If you like your novels to read something like a high voltage, Saturday afternoon matinee serial, then this is definitely for you. I'm hooked on Pavo now, so I'll almost certainly join him in his (likely) semi-preposterous forthcoming mind-boggling adventures. It's like Flash Gordon in Ancient Rome!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2014Format: KindleVerified Purchasemagnificent, entertaining, full of twists, surprises and suspense. i can't wait to get the new book of doherty.
he has a great talent, you can't stop reading the book, it is so interesting, describing the struggle between eastern rome and the
sassanids empire.
few romans penetrating the persian empire to discover an old agreement between shapur ii and the romans in order
to save the eastern roman empire.
recommendable to all ancient history ficition lovers.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI like these books as they cover a fairly poorly documented point in history - the decline of the Roman empire. The books are very well researched and the characters are all fairly interesting, if a little one- dimensional.
However, the author's writing style isn't great: he overuses certain words. For example, there's an awful lot of 'hubris' towards the end of the book. He also uses the good old 'hero knocked unconscious' device to make big leaps in the story and there's a deus ex machina ending.
On the whole, a decent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2014Format: KindleVerified Purchasewaiting for the next installment there are a few minor discrepencies but it is a novel not the bible it is written to entertain and it does that well.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOur group of heroes are pushed into the desert near modern day Iran in order to find a lost treaty. The Persians are at the point of war and there is just no apparent way to stop an invasion. This is the most action packed book of the 3. I had called it a trio but the author appears to be writing a 4th...and I state "mama don't you know" as I am addicted to this fast shrinking band of supersoldiers. I will be waiting for #4 as these are just so well written. I did finish this in 1 day and it deserved my purchase. Shu

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis Book is real history, being told in a manner that keeps me wanting more and more. I pick up the book and the I find it very hard to put down, So I end up reading straight through, then trying to find the next book! I had no Idea that real History could be so facinatoing, it brought up so many questions that I then had to dig even deeper into this same history to find the answers.
If you have a young person who says that they don"t like reading, give them this book, .....Robert D. Moore

4.0 out of 5 stars Solo in inglese
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCarine le imprese di Pavo, peccato che la prima parte si trovi in lingua italiana, e le altre due solo in inglese. La lettura in inglese è comunque agevole, non ci sono ostacoli particolari e appassiona comunque.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best so far!!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI must say the best in the series by far. Lots of twists and turns coupled with answers and yet more questions.
By now having formed an attachment to the major players in the story I found my self reading just one more page after page after page to make sure that they could make it through difficult times and not fall foul to the villainous foe!!!
In all it was just a great read that took hold and made you want to read to the very end and left you with a little disappointment once you had finished. (Because there was no more to read!!)
All I can say is bring on the next one!! (In a hurry).

5.0 out of 5 stars Land of the Sacred Fire - Gordon Doherty
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was quite lucky in a way because the release of this novel virtually coincided with me recently finishing the second book. Clearly having thoroughly enjoyed the first two in the series, I was looking forward to this one and wondered if Gordon could create another great story. Needless to say, he has, and in my humble opinion has gone a little bit further as well.
Pavo's last adventure found him in frost, snow and ice but in book three, he's under a searing hot sun and for a period of time, elsewhere but I won't say where so as not to spoil the story. Needless to say there are a few surprises along the way as well as a welcome return for some of the characters. With descriptive, easily imagined scenes, wonderful characters and a great story, you can't go wrong in reading this one.
If you enjoyed Gordon's previous novels, this is not to be missed and I think is probably the best in the series so far. If for some reason you haven't read any of Gordon's work but you like historical novels with excitement, adventure, accuracy and real authenticity, then look no further. Very highly recommended, a great read and thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klasse!
