Léonidas Nightshade And The Amethyst School For Spellcasters Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

A chance encounter with the horned god of the forest leaves its mark on Léonidas Nightshade in more ways than one. Within days Léonidas is torn from his normal rural home and plunged into a new world of magic where he’s forced to come to terms with the truth about his parents and about himself. Half-spellcaster, half-fae royalty, he’s sent to hone his magical craft at the Amethyst School for Spellcasters. But being god-touched makes Léonidas stand out amongst his peers from his very first day, but not in the way he had hoped. What promised to be a chance to learn the magical arts becomes a battle for self-acceptance.

With the help of new-found friends Tamara, Coco and Aamin, Léonidas begins to find himself but is puzzled by the brooding gaze of Atticus Valor, Prince of the Vaewolves – is it love or hate in his eyes? Can Léonidas eventually find the space at the Amethyst School to grow into his magical powers or will the dark forces that covet them conspire against him? And as the predators close in, will he have enough strength to fight them?

Léonidas Nightshade and the Amethyst School for Spellcasters is the first book in a new LGBT YA Dark fantasy series by Dion Marc. Magical realms, queer male leads and high fantasy combine to form the detailed world-building that Marc’s fans have come to expect. Fast-paced action, the turmoil of coming-of-age, and the age-old struggle between good and evil make for an unputdownable story that is set in the 1950’s. Join Léonidas in his epic battle to fight those who would crush not only his body but his spirit as well.

For me, this was a “come for the premise, stay for the character development” kind of read: while the author deserves full credit for some immersive and interesting fantasy world building, it’s the people who inhabit these pages that were most memorable for me, and felt most key to the balance of dark and difficult with light and hopeful that feels like the essence of this story. It’s hard not to care about, and want the best for, Leon, who faces challenges for understanding and acceptance from pretty much every angle you can think of, and then a few more. He’s got a good heart, a strong soul, and people who care for him– and that makes things better, but not even close to easy. There’s some powerful storytelling here, and I’m not even going to try for any kind of plot summary, as it deserves to be experienced on its own terms, but I will say that I’m looking forward to seeing more from this world.

The title starts off right in the thick of things. A strong pace, steady bits of info and world setting, mixed with a dash of suspense.

Things mellow a bit heading into ch. one and reminds me of how a bard would lay out a tale. The narrator’s talent adds to that feel.

I’m finding it difficult to put my thoughts into words though. The author pulls together a lot of elements that made me think of various other books. Not copying them, more nods I guess.

I liked how he has two stories playing out in tandem as well. On one side, you have the orphaned mc thrust into a world of mystery and magic, trying to discover who he is and where he fits. On the flip, you have the villain seeking to gain his prize, destroy the boy, and rule his world just a few short years after the fall of nazi Germany. He revels in leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. (I mean torture and all.)

The authors also does a good job of building the friends/side characters. They each have unique aspects and there is a lot of room for them to grow and develop along with their mc as the series develops.

I’m pretty impressed with the title. It reads well as a story on its own and sets things up pretty nicely for the continuation of the series.

Bonus, the …. heat…. Is discussed but kept to a level that would be appropriate for most high schoolers and above. I’m a little hesitant about the “mates” being 15 and 18 but the author keeps things between them pretty pg so for now, I’m just mindful.

All in all, I would strongly recommend giving it a listen or read. :)

The story, character building and world building are amazing. I got an ALC (advanced listener copy) and got sucked into the story. It was well written and I got lost in this new adventure. I absolutely can not wait for the next book. I NEED to know how the tell unfolds. I definitely recommend if you like fantasy, magic and daring adventures!

Cute story - vulnerable lead story - soooo many typos, incorrect use of “to” and “too” - whoever proofread this book needs a new job - the errors interfered with reading smoothly

A fantastic storyline with a well built world that's filled with wonderfully well-written characters. This is a welcome addition to my keeper-shelf.

Enjoyed this one from a new to me author. It was well written and fun with a great premise! Definitely could use some proofing but I didn't take away a star from it for that. Looking forward to the next one!

    Something was Lacking...

This book was okay, but something was missing from this book; I just did not feel engaged with the premise or plot of the story. I'm not sure if it's the story itself or the author's writing style...

Léonidas Nightshade And The Amethyst School For Spellcasters by Dion Marc somehow felt empty and apathetic. Even so, this is being the first book of the series might make it so it'll become better in the future; we'll see. I unfortunately can not recommend this book.

If you're looking for great world building you've come to the right place with this story. It takes us from forests in Wales to the magical realm of the Amethyst School of the title and we follow Leon, the friends he struggles to make there, Atticus, Prince of the Vaewolves (wait until you find out what they are, I loved it!) and of course some great, scheming villains. I wondered about why the 1950s setting but when you read the story and think about the struggles queer characters like this would have in that time period it makes perfect sense. A superb choice that adds layers to the struggle of growing up, finding yourself and your people and finding a place in society. Very much looking forward to more in this series. I've just listened to the audiobook performed by John York and this is a must listen, even if you've read the book. He made the story come alive. I got lost in the audio and I forgot to try to anticipate what was going to happen, it was like experiencing it for the first time. I'd been meaning to do a re-read but glad I chose to listen to it first.
