Carlyle's characters are well-defined and realistically complicated, especially Alex, her brother and her mother, and the writing style is smooth, fluid and assured. Lessons in Love has a feel-good and compelling plot that could easily be made into a movie. It's most highly recommended! --Readers' Favorite

Clarissa Carlyle's story is written in an uncomplicated style. The plot moves along at a good pace as the story explores what could happen when a young teacher and eighteen-year-old pupil fall in love with each other. They know this is a violation of trust and boundaries - but, of course, feelings are feelings, and they know to hold back until Alex finishes school. I liked the character of Alex. Her need to fit in and hide her true self was both sad but understandable. A gentle and positive story about facing and coming to terms with trauma and finding a love that enables healing and eventually moving forward in a healthy way. --Readers' Favorite
Loved it! I found myself absolutely loving this story. The romance was done in such a respectful way that I have to applaud the author. I really enjoyed this book because it shows how easily your life can change from one extreme to another. How in a blink of an eye it can all change. --Book Happiness

I read this book in one night, I just couldn't stop reading, sometimes it reminded me of Aria and Ezra's story from Pretty Little Liars, but it was so much lovely and with a dark side that made it unique. --Vanessa King

It's hard enough being a high school student. Add popularity, cheerleading and a very troubling past and it's almost impossible. Come along, one very sexy math teacher and the story just gets better. Very well done. --Anita Scott Shofneron

I SO SO SO LOVE THIS BOOK! Lessons in Love is the first book in this incredible series about an emotionally wounded young woman and the forbidden fruit that draws her into the despair and wonder of first love! --Cxandra

Love is definitely the theme of this book, and although this book could come across as just a sweet coming of age book in the beginning, it is not. It definitely has a nice HEA but it has real life problems for a girl that has been handed a tough set of cards in life, and lessons in love and growth and dreams. Enjoyable easy read and will be reading the next in the series. --Amazon Customer

This is the first in a collection of amazing books and I have to say that I love each and every one of them, the way that this book starts the story and then leaves you wanting more is just amazing. I recommend everybody read this and the ones that follow, trust me when I say that you will be gripped from the moment you read the first page. --Atlanta Whitlock

Wasn't sure I would like it because of the teacher/student issue. But the characters are lovely and it addresses a much deeper issue in a sensitive manner. --Loves Britcoms

Tragic yet heart-warming --A Reader's Perspective

Adored this book. It's funny, touching and very relatable no matter our age because we ALL have been there. Read and enjoy. --Books4me

One of the best Student/Teacher books I have read. --Paula L. Phillips

New Adult Romance author. Reading was my earliest passion, often seeking the sanctuary of my room or the library to read everything I could get my hands on.

I probably drink too much coffee and eat too much junk food, but to compensate do like running and rollerblading outdoors when the weather is nice. I'm a hopeful romantic who prefers stories with a happy ending. You can often find me in a library or coffee shop working on my next story, or with my nose in a book.

This book really moved me. I remember being in high school. The cliques. The drama. The young love. The stress. Finding yourself, your path. It sucked. Not unlike what Alex went through in Lessons in Love. Well, no hot sexy teacher to get involved with... Which I do need to point out is how interesting that Clarissa Carlyle tackled such a taboo subject at a time when the media blasts teachers who have been romantically involved with students. Thankfully that wasn't the case, but it easily could've been. But Mark plays such an important role in Alex opening up and giving the finger to everyone keeping her locked into that place of stagnation. This book is so much more than just a coming of age type book. Great for a high schooler to read in order to overcome high school bs. Also great for adults because the complexity of these situations can be understood, and appreciated, on a completely different level when you aren't living through it. So it's a great must-read for all ages! I can't wait until I can get the next 2 books!

This book is currently free on all major platforms at this time. This is the second book by author Clarissa Carlyle that I have read and while it is completely different from the first book they are both good books. I could relate to the characters a bit more in this story and felt more for them as I was reading. The author did a great job with the storyline and with making the reader feel like they were right there with the characters throughout the book.

Alex is your typical high school cheerleader, well cheerleader captain really, or is she? Alex is hiding a lot of secrets from her friends, teachers, family and maybe even from herself. She has had a complete turn around in her life when something happens to her father and now she is trying to find herself again. She has friends, but no one that knows or understands the true Alex...until a new math teacher comes to the school. Mr. Simmons is cute, smart and can see right through Alex and her half truths....

The storyline is a good one, the plot flows and the end leaves the reader wanting more. The reason that I gave this book a 4 star review instead of a 5 star is because I felt as if the author could have made some of the dialogue more realistic, the idea of getting into Princeton at the last minute with terrible grades was a bit much and the fact that the reader only gets to see bits and pieces of the "real" Alex (who is much more enjoyable and likable) make me want more of that part of the story....not the fluff...and then the letter from Mr. Simmons makes the reader want to yell, scream and hit something in frustration...

This is a good book and I will be checking out the next one to see what happens once Alex starts college and is on her own with people that she can start fresh with. I recommend that you add this to your TBR list - you will enjoy it and you will think about after you have finished reading it - so add it today and see what you think.

I WANT TO READ THE SEQUELS NOW!!!
I absolutely loved this story! Even when I was annoyed with Alex for lying all the time, I could understand and sympathize with her reasons. Not many people could have experienced a trauma of the magnitude that Alex had and come out of it with their psyches intact. The description of this event brought tears to my eyes, and the true-to-life characterizations of the “mean girls” and the jocks had me wandering down the halls of my own high school once again. I was a brainy nerd though, so I could certainly empathize with Alex’s burning desire to be popular.
I could also empathize with her crush on a hot teacher and the fact that he was just as attracted to her would have been a dream come true for someone like me. Still, they do the right thing and wait.
Now Alex is off to college, and we, the readers, are left to wonder what will become of this star-crossed couple? I personally am rooting for Mark!

My first read by this author was OK , not great. Overall the premise was good but somewhat unrealistically and improbably portrayed. The things that Alex was able to accomplish as a young girl would be difficult at best. She hides/pretends for years to be other than what she really is but spills all to a new hot teacher in just days. And, while I normally like teacher/students stories I was a little creeped out by the high school student/teacher romance. I also didn't like the message that is sent to young adults about hiding themselves behind lies to be popular, accepted by the norm.

Lessons in Love, the first book I've read from this author, was an incredibly pleasant read. I loved everything about it. The length, how it wasn't too long but also not too short, how the details weren't too much but were just enough, how the characters had a balance of admirable characteristics and flaws. Realistic, and although there are many books out there with the Student-Teacher storyline, I love how this author took it and changed it into something a lot more. Fantastic ending, valuable lesson about high school for young adults out there and great way to show how education matters more than petty high school drama, that although love is truly amazing, it shouldn't stand in your way of any great opportunities, and how no matter how long you've fallen, it's never too late to get up and start running. I applaud the author for every word written down, definitely looking forward to reading the rest of her books.

Alex Heron is in high school and is also a cheerleader, she is really smart and was originally at a private school but after the sudden death of her father she ended up having to move house to a trailer park and ended up being moved into a common high school. No one at her current school knows that she is quite clever as when she does term tests and assignments she doesn't try as hard as she should.
But when her new maths teacher turns round and calls her out with one of her recent tests she tries to hide beneath the shield that she has been hiding in since she started.

Mark Simmons transferred to Alex's high school as they were in need of a new teacher but when he looks through all of Alex classes' recent tests he notices that Alex started to write all the right answers but then she rubbed most of them out and put the wrong answers. He seems really confused by this so he calls her out in their next class and says that he wants a word with her at the end of the day and when she does show up he can see straight away that she is hiding something, but he doesn't exactly try to push for what it is.

Alex notices that Mark can see straight through her and after Mark telling her that because this is her last year before she goes off to college that she needs to up her grades as she is failing one of them. He offers to help her apply for the college that her dad went too but he needs her to be willing to put the work into it.

So when Alex decides that she must give up cheerleading so that she can get all of her grades up, she really is worrying about what everyone will say because she just wants to fit in without anyone finding out about her past. As the extra lessons progress for Alex, her and Mark are starting realise that they are both developing feelings for each other but Mark knows that whilst he is her teacher nothing can become of it.

Will Alex's friends ever find out her secret that she has managed to keep from everyone and will they use it against her or be there for her. And will Mark ever realise that he wants to be with Alex as much as she wants it, but will she ever get into the college that father went too. The only way to find out all of this is to read it. I promise you that you won't regret it.
