In the playground it's the law of the jungle
But at the school gate, there are no rules at all...
When Sadie Roper moves back to London, she's determined to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. First, she needs to get her daughter settled into a new school-one of the most exclusive in the city. Next, she's going to get back the high-flying criminal barrister career she sacrificed for marriage ten years earlier. But nothing goes quite as planned. The school is not very welcoming newcomers, her daughter hasn't made any friends yet and the other mothers are as fiercely competitive as their children. Sadie immediately finds herself on the outside as she navigates the fraught politics of the school gate.
But the tide starts to turn as Sadie begins to work on a scandalous, high-profile case that's the perfect opportunity to prove herself again, even though a dangerous flirtation threatens to cloud her professional judgment. And when Julia, queen of the school moms, befriends Sadie, she draws her into the heart of the world from which she was previously excluded. Soon Sadie and her family start to thrive, but does this close new friendship prevent her from seeing the truth? Sadie may be keeping her friends close, but what she doesn't know is that her enemies are closer still...
Dark, addictive and compelling, The Lies You Told is a compulsive psychological thriller from a master storyteller.
"An extremely well-written and unsettling novel . . . Full of intrigue and menace, it creeps up on you until that final explosive twist. A great read" -- Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times author of The Silent Patient
"I read The Lies You Told in two days, barely able to turn the pages fast enough. It's spare and taut, the sense of wrongness building in chilling, skillfully written layers, with a jaw dropping last-line twist." -- Lisa Jewell, New York Times bestselling author of The Family Upstairs

REVIEW :
First book by this author for me, whose books are recommended by BA Paris, who I love! Blood Orange (‘19 - Legal) and It Ends At Midnight (‘23 - Legal) all look good; different characters, not a series.

Like the writing and the 2-sided plot of a school dilemma and a court case. Very enjoyable and found myself worrying about one plot while reading the other, if that makes sense to anyone. Tension on several fronts really picked-up towards the last 30%. Will definitely read another book by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2023The story was very intriguing, and it hooked me from the beginning. Sadie Roper returns to her childhood home in London with her 10-year-old daughter Robin after fleeing her unhappy marriage in the USA. Sadie's husband had suddenly begun acting strangely and threatened to take their daughter away if Sadie didn't leave. With nowhere else to go, Sadie moves into the house where she grew up with a vindictive and emotionally abusive mother. When her mother died, she left the house to Sadie's daughter Robin, on the provision they live in the house and Robin attend Sadie's old school. Sadie wasn't happy in that house or at that school, but she has no choice. Places are competitive at the school and it's the middle of the year, but a place has suddenly opened up so Robin can enroll. As soon as they arrive at the school, neither Sadie nor Robin feels especially welcome. Both feel ostracized, Robin by the other students and Sadie by the mothers picking up and dropping off their children. The parents all follow the lead of Julia, who seems to be the queen bee of the drop-off area. At the same time, Sadie gets a job in her old office working with a defense lawyer. She is assigned to review mountains of printed evidence in the case of a teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. As both Sadie and Robin struggle to fit in, they soon find out that being given the cold shoulder by their peers is the least of their worries. Many difficult topics are dealt with, including bullying (both children and adults), child abuse, grooming, victim blaming/shaming, psychological abuse, sexual harassment in the workplace, women's careers derailed by parenthood, etc.
I really enjoyed the story and was anxious to find out what happened next, but after about halfway, I started to get exasperated with Sadie. I know she had a lot going on, but she KEPT putting herself in awkward situations with the "mean girls" when it really wasn't necessary. The ending felt a bit rushed and slightly confusing as everything was explained, so I wish that had been fleshed out a bit more, rather than all the endless coffee mornings and bottle-of-wine evenings with the hateful mummies that seemed to take up the majority of the book. She had a job, while all the other parents devoted themselves to drama 24/7, so it was frustrating that she kept trying to jump in with them. Speaking of which, her employment and relationship situations weren't exactly clarified at the end of the book, either so I really wish everything had been tied up a bit better at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2024A great psychological thriller that keeps you entertained. The school moms can be a great nightmare! It’s about motherhood, mental abuse, marriage, school competition and women at work.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2021This book is different from my normal mysteries because it centers around family and social life. It's sort of a mean mom's story who create mean girls. Or women wanting to live through their daughters and want too much, expect too much and don't much care what their daughters want. It's not good enough to do your best, you have to BE the best.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2021This is the second book I've read by Harriet Tyce and I am definitely a fan. I loved her debut novel, Blood Orange, and this latest book is just as captivating and addicting.
This book really captured my attention from the get-go and never let up. I love books where there are unlikeable characters and there are quite a few here. I also love books where I think I know where things are heading and I definitely had things pegged wrong, but that's ok because it just keeps me more engaged and my brain working overtime as I try to work out just how the pieces will fall together.
I loved that there were a few different threads happening in this book so it kept things moving along but it also made me want to read faster to get to the end to see how things in both would end up playing out. And I really did end up becoming equally invested in all threads.
The writing in this book is so smart and addicting...I just could not put this book down until I reached the end - and the last few chapters really had my heart pounding as we reached the final conclusion. If you have not picked this one up yet, I highly recommend it...it is definitely a thrilling, binge-worthy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024I really wanted to like this book but I found the writer’s style didn’t engage me. The characters felt flat and the story went on too long. After several chapters I skimmed most of it and probably missed the point of it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly thrilling and brilliantly written
I absolutely loved ‘Blood Orange’, Harriet Tyce’s debut novel, and to my delight, her second book, ‘The Lies You Told’, is no less dazzling. The plotting of the main story, and of the equally compelling legal-procedural subplot, is brilliant. The elements hold together like the pieces of an intricate puzzle-box, and the action flows naturally, yet with breathtaking energy. Harriet Tyce engages the reader’s intelligence and emotions throughout: there are intriguing mysteries, tear-inducing scenarios and gut-twisting suspense. The characters are vividly and convincingly drawn, and their interactions create not only superb drama, but also a very elegant and amusing comedy of manners - I laughed as often as I gasped in horror. The unflinching depiction of school-gate politics and competitive parenting inspire both mirth and dismay. As well as being a terrific piece of storytelling, the book also offers insights into a variety of mother-daughter relationships, from the toxic to the tender. In every way, a highly enjoyable and rewarding read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read
This is another book that has been on my TBR pile for some time, and I’m glad I finally got round to reading it.
This is a great psychological thriller that definitely had me hooked.
Sadie and her daughter Robin move back to the UK after she splits up with her husband.
The only way this was possible was to follow her late mother’s instructions in her Will and enrol Robin in the all girls school that Sadie hated.
As part of this they moved back into her childhood home but things don’t go smoothly for Sadie and Robin.
Robin is shunned by the other girls at school and Sadie is made to feel very unwelcome by the other parents.
When the ring leader discovers that Sadie used to go to the school she changes her mind about her and then accepts her as part of the group.
Things start to improve for Robin but unbeknownst to her and her Mum, someone is trying to remove her from the group.
This is a gripping thriller that I really enjoyed.

2.0 out of 5 stars don't bother
I thought this was a big mess of a book, too many plots that - to me - didn't really have anything to do with each other. ie: the court case. The plot line with Sadie's husband I found pointless and ridiculous, just filler. The trope of the bitchy school girls' moms is overdone and so cliched, the moms being caricatures, like adult Mean Girls. I was at around the 80% mark in the story and really didn't even know what it was "about". And Sadie's daughter is missing and she still goes to work! WTF!!! The ending was anti climactic, and if the epilogue was supposed to be a big twist, it fell flat for me. A hard pass on this book

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot going on!
In this book Sadie returns home to the UK with her daughter after separating from her husband in the US. She has inherited a house from her mother on the condition that her daughter, Robin, attends the same school Sadie did - and passes the exam to get into the high school. The school moms are horrid to both Sadie and Robin, and not just because Sadie has to work for a living. Amongst all the school drama Sadie is involved in a criminal case in court about a teacher accused of raping a student.
There was a lot going on in this book - the marriage break up, the conditional inheritance, the school drama, work and an additional mystery involving a school girl this really grabbed my attention at the beginning... but I found it a bit repetitive and how many tests do these kids have??? And they get their grades the same day!! At the end I felt everything came together in a very neat way... too neat for the nature of the story. I enjoyed this book when I started reading but was fed up of it by the end. A common problem when you have so any characters that are just not very nice!
