A Life to Kill (Coroner Jenny Cooper series Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 970 ratings

A Life to Kill is the seventh thrilling installment in Matthew Hall's twice CWA Gold Dagger nominated Coroner Jenny Cooper series.

If they're hiding something, we've got a right to know. We've got a right to know what Kenny died for . . .

The day they've all been waiting for is at hand. The last British combat soldiers in Helmand are counting the minutes until their departure for home. For their excited families in Highcliffe, it spells the end of an agonizing six month wait.

But in the final hours, disaster strikes. Nineteen-year-old Private Pete 'Skippy' Lyons is abducted and the patrol sent out to locate him is ambushed. One killed, two injured. One still missing in action . . .

Their loved ones are left desperate for answers the Army won't provide. How could Private Lyons have been snatched from a heavily fortified command post? And why are officers trying to disguise what happened during the mission to save him?

Their only hope lies with Coroner Jenny Cooper, who must take on the full might of the military to stop the truth being buried along with the boy soldiers. But in a town filled with secrets and rumours, it's not only the Army that has something to hide.

The Jenny Cooper novels have been adapted into a hit TV series, Coroner, made for CBC and NBC Universal starring Serinda Swan and Roger Cross.

Review

"An intriguingly flawed and appealing character. . . . A series to watch." —Booklist on The Disappeared

"Readers of Patricia Cornwell will very much enjoy this psychological thriller. Jenny Cooper's character is flawed and unflinchingly real. Highly recommended." —
Library Journal starred review of The Redeemed

I have always enjoyed the "Coroner" series but this one is particularly good. It involves soldiers in Afghanistan which nearly put me off reading it but it is mainly set in England and the Afghanistan section involves only one day. I particularly enjoyed the character of Jenny's officer, whose personality has changed after she was injured in an accident previously. This book is well written, easy to read and has an interesting story line, I found it difficult to put down, it rates as the best book I have read in a long time.

In this latest novel in the Coroner Jenny Cooper series, A Life to Kill, Hall immerses us in a complicated, emotional case involving a missing Private, a dead soldier, two critically injured, and a military that seems determined to keep their skeletons in the closet.

The writing is tight and crisp. The characters are flawed, secretive, and loyal. And the plot is an intricate, exceptionally-paced mystery full of twists, turns, revelations, deception, corruption, allegiances, power, combat, violence, the ins and outs of military life, and murder.

A Life to Kill is a without a doubt an intelligent, masterfully plotted, absorbing page-turner that had me hooked from the very first page. It’s fascinating, shocking, at times even disturbing, and definitely one of my favourite reads of the year.

I have waited a long time for this book, having pre ordered it back in 2015, but it was well worth the wait.
All of Previous Coroner books have been outstanding and this latest one is no exception. Although it is a stand alone book it still has the Coroner's own personal story continuing in the background.
As always and, as I have come to expect of Matthew Hall, the story is very well researched. As a wife of an retired army officer I can appreciate the depth and accuracy of the details of army life.
An excellent read, totalling absorbing - I couldn't put it down.
The only thing that disappoints me and is quite beyond my comprehension, is why this brilliant series of books have not been snapped up and made into televised dramas. In my opinion they would make an excellent series.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough and, if this is your first foray into the life of The Coroner Jenny Cooper I would also recommend all of the previous books in the series.
In case you are still in any doubt..... I loved it!

I purchased the entire Jenny Cooper series some time ago, having some spare time recently I have just finished binge reading. Very well written and researched and as suggested by another reviewer, why on earth has this series not ended up on TV ! .. Please tell me there is another book in the making.

Slow start, a muddled middle and an abrupt end. Not the best in the series, but worth the read. Didn't understand Simon's story in all of this, seemed much like an afterthought. So now Jenny is alone, no personal love life and no Simon. What next?
