Line In The Sand: The story of David and Goliath Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

A gripping adventure based on David and Goliath! For fans of Ben Kane, Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell and Simon Scarrow.

A young shepherd must follow a deadly path…

1000 BC

Believed to be a child of adultery, young Dawid has been treated as an outcast all his life. Forced to take refuge in the stables at Beth Lechem, his birthplace, he makes his living as a shepherd and thief.

After a fateful visit from Shemu’el, a revered prophet, Dawid is given the chance to leave behind his humble beginnings. Recruited as a spy, he is sent to the city of Gath to discover all he can about the military might of the Philistines, whose imperial ambitions could lead to war.

But when he is betrayed, Dawid finds himself thrown into prison. His only way out is to fight the fearsome Golyat — Gath’s champion warrior — in an arena for the entertainment of the Philistine nobles.

Though faced with impossible odds, Dawid is determined to fulfil his mission. But as the Philistines prepare to declare war on his people, he begins to wonder whether there is any way to prevent a bloody massacre…

LINE IN THE SAND is a thrilling espionage adventure based on the story of David and Goliath.

‘A gripping and exciting read, well-researched and convincing.’ —
Peter Tonkin, author of The Ides

'a rattling good tale ... absorbing to read ... an interesting story well told'

Alistair Forrest writes historical fiction, so far six novels with a new series set around Caesar’s invasions of Britain on the way. As the son of a Royal Navy officer, it’s hardly surprising he frequently dives into ancient sea-faring adventure.

Alistair was brought up in the Middle East, travelling to school in the UK. He began a career in journalism at the South Wales Echo in the same newsroom as the author Ken Follett, later working for other regional daily newspapers. He then chose a career path of editing magazines before becoming principal of a public relations company.

“I’m delighted to have signed with Sapere Books and look forward to seeing my novels join the works of such an amazing family of talented authors,” he says.

Today, his love of writing fiction is only interrupted by his work as editor of a natural health magazine, as a volunteer with the Alderney Literary Trust, and as media consultant for the States of Alderney, the government of the island where he lives with his wife Lynda and two very large dogs.

Yet another great novel from this author. Alistair Forrest has a rare talent, that brings stories and their characters to life in such a way that sometimes I feel as if I am in the same room as them. I must confess to having only the vaguest memory of the story of David and Goliath and therefore could enjoy this version without being unduly hindered with too many preconceptions. It appears to me that the author remains loyal to the generally accepted story line while building a story around that story.
It is clear that much work was put in to represent the period, it’s culture and methodologies of conducting war so that I was both educated and enthralled by the larger story. David was brought to life as a boy, affected to some degree at first, by confidence in his own ability slamming against inexperience and impulsiveness of those so young. As life events matured him at breakneck speed, he became a caring and intelligent man revered by those that new him. The author even managed to have me rooting in part for Goliath and saddened by his death (no spoiler here unless you have never heard of David and Goliath), even though it was a death that the greater good required.
My biggest concern about choosing this book was the known ending but somehow the author managed to weave that as a mere fact into a story that was more about David’s life, friends and adventures. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is no Sunday School story!

Absolutely brilliantly written - I was rivetted from start to finish.
It’s quite dark and seriously violent. The young hero, Dhavit (David), has his dark side too and at times the giant, Golyat (Goliath), seems more likeable than the sling-swinging shepherd. This is an adventure story where an unlikely youth is recruited to spy on the affluent Philistines where the giants perform gory executions in an arena for the entertainment of the nobility. Dhavit is betrayed and tortured before being in the right place at the right time to save a Philistine princess. This sets him up to get the true story of a forthcoming invasion of the hapless Israelites. The climax is gripping and although in a sense predictable (giant gets done in by weedy shepherd boy) it has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. One nice touch is the use of unanglicised names (Dhavit, Shamu’el, Golyat, Beth Lechem) and the sense of place (e.g. the filth of Beth Lechem, and the hand-to-mouth existence of the locals). It feels well researched and lifts the story from the pages of the Old Testament and turns it into exciting historical fiction. Definitely recommended!

A gripping retelling of the book of Samuel full of scholarship and imagination. Amazing in its depth of Biblical knowledge and astonishing in its narrative verve. I could not recommend it more highly.
