This story is so raw and full of emotions. It makes you question are we always doing what is best for our children or what we think is best for us. Such a great ending.

5 out of 5 stars
An absolutely riveting read! Hats off to the author!
Ten-year-old Zac knows he has a dad - everyone has to have a dad - but he's never met him. His nan lashes out with fury and his grandad gets real quiet every time Zac tries to talk about his dad. Most importantly, his mom (Juliet) never speaks of his dad (Liam) other than to say Liam "did a runner" before Zac was even born. And yet, how could that be true when (at the end of one very, very painful date), a slightly sloshed Juliet confesses, "I only ever loved Liam. I don't think I even want a boyfriend if it's not him." Zac is on a mission, aided by his best friend Teagan, to find meet his dad and make his mom happy. Juliet is in a rut - has been in a rut - ever since that gut-wrenchingly awful day her brother (Jamie) died when Zac was just three weeks old. It was an accident - an accident that could have been prevented - but an accident nonetheless. Ever since that accident, Juliet (who's always been a bit hefty) has thrown herself into being the best mom for Zac. She's done her absolute best raising her son on her own - sure she indulges him here and there but honestly, he deserves a bit of sweetness in his life. Juliet, her mother and her father have each held onto a soul-crushing secret. None of their secrets are the same and the reveal of any one of these secrets could send their whole house of cards tumbling down on Zac's head. I was completely enamored with this novel. From start to finish, I loved the characters - the way Regan told wielded the three narratives (Zac, Juliet and Mitch (Zac's grandfather)) so expertly really made this story memorable. I absolutely adored Zac and Teagan. Regan concocted a perfect blend of sweetness, determination and troublesome kid-logic in her ten-year-olds. And I really connected with Juliet- I felt like I could sit down with her and have a cup of tea like old friends. Her insecurities, such as those concerning her son, her weight and her loneliness, made her feel far more than a character in a book - she felt real. This novel had just the right doses of heartwarming and heartbreaking - if you are looking for a wonderful beach read or a book that will leave you with a smile on your face, make sure to pick this one up!

It was a sleeper to start but as it got going the story picked up and it was everything I thought it would be. The story of the love Zac has for his single mother Juliet is simply amazing. As a mother of two boys, I can relate. I also could relate to the issue Juliet has with her weight and self esteem. It is a book of love and secrets that impacted the lives of this family. I really enjoyed this read and as a single mom, I would totally recommend this book to other mothers.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018Format: KindleOne night can change so many lives; and one determined soul can reconnect them all. Ten year old Zac is facing a lot- he isn’t exactly popular at school. In fact, his size makes him a target for bullying and his sole friend is his neighbor Teagan. All he ever wanted was for him and his mother to be happy. He wants a dad for himself, and someone to love his mother.
A drunken declaration from Juliet sends her son into a tailspin. If his father was the only man she ever loved, he needed to know more about him. Secrets will come out, and bonds will be tested beyond limits. This book is about love, family, loyalty, and accepting the past.
My thoughts:
I love this book, there’s so much heart! Now, full disclosure, I read this book over a month ago and have been waiting until closer to release to review it. I don’t like doing that, because it isn’t as fresh in my mind. I may just begin scheduling reviews when they are this far out.
This one, though, stays with you. Each character burrows into your soul. Zac is loving and sweet, the apple of his mother and grandmother’s eye. He’s also very smart and mature for his age. I loved his thought process, his care for his mother, and his relationship with his best friend. I felt bad for him, being bullied for being overweight. Every time I read about things like this I can’t believe they could ever be real…. but they most likely are.
Juliet is working constantly and still can’t make ends meet, but she is determined to be a good mother. Between stress eating, holing herself off from romance, and the occasional lifted item; she’s a mess. When she finds out how badly Zac has been trying not only to find her a companion, but himself a father, she knows it’s time to come clean about a few secrets.
I even liked the grandparents, though the hate living in Juliet’s mother was sometimes overwhelming. She has a lot of pain and has been allowed unhealthy coping strategies for far too long. Still, she loved Zac without reservation, and her pain was one I could understand.
The premise was interesting and the book flowed between the three narrators easily. I loved the writing style, and felt like the additional insights were completely necessary for the story. For me, this is a five star book.
On the adult content scale, there is some language and bullying. The bullying was actually the hardest on me. I give it a four. Talk to your younger teens about how it is portrayed and what they think of it.
I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from First to Read in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!
