Lord Garrington's Vessel (Duty & Magic: MM Modern Day Regency) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 863 ratings

It's 2022. Magic isn't supposed to be real. Arranged marriages aren't supposed to exist.
How are gay arranged marriages for the purpose of magic a thing?

Fen has grown up all alone in boarding schools. Never meeting any of his family. At his graduation, his older brother turns up to take him home. Except Fen discovers he is the result of a shameful affair and not actually related to Lord Garrington at all. Yet, for appearance’s sake, everyone must continue to believe they are brothers.

To make matters worse, an indiscretion reveals that Fen is a vessel. Someone who grows magic but cannot wield it. Magic can only escape his body and not kill him by regularly submitting his body to a mage. Hence the crazy arranged marriage idea.

It's a shame the only mage he wants is his arrogant and obnoxious fake brother.

Lord Xander Garrington, like all British nobility, is secretly a mage.

He was only supposed to pay the boy off, but Fen turned out to be outrageously pretty. Then he turns out to be a vessel. The opportunity is too great to miss.

He needs to pretend Fen is his brother and sell his stepmother’s bastard to the highest bidder. Securing the best possible match to advance the family’s fortunes.

If only Xander's emotions would obey.

He is supposed to sell his fake brother, not fall for him.

Please note. Xander is a controlling, obsessive bad boy who likes to take control.

This book touches on dark themes, including a side character subjected to the worst that can happen. Off page and not from either main character.

This book is high heat. No Mpreg. HEA guaranteed.

Omg! This was so good! I went in completely blind, which I’m so glad for.
It’s the perfect pallet cleanser book. Short, only 200 pages. It’s apart of a 4 book series. So it’s great to hop back until when you need something different. This definitely checked all my boxes for a fun, sexy, magical MM romance book.

Xander is a modern day lord. Fennrick is the step brother and born out of an affair. Sent away at birth to not embarrass the family. Until he was summoned back to be sold off the highest bidder in an arrangement marriage. Until Xander realizes Fennrick is different.

It was a captivating fantasy tale with an enchanting adventure. With vivid world-building, intriguing characters, and a well-paced plot. The quest for the eponymous Vessel is filled with mystery, magic, and unexpected twists, making this a really fun read.

    -MM fantasy romance
    -Magic
    -Found Family
    -Grumpy a$$hole
    -Spice is off the charts
    -Not a slow burn
-Must have sex or can blow up (take it for what it is)

These two characters weave a deep and abiding spell on the reader! I could not put this down! Not until...we!!...you'll just h have to pick this book up. Steamy fun!!!😚

So, are the primogeniture laws not in effect in this world? Is Xander no longer Lord Garrington? Will he not inherit the earldom?

With the level of promiscuity of the nobility here, surely Fen isn’t the only byblow, and they can’t all be a secret. And how obvious is it that the Montforts were trying to hide Fen away, especially now that the whole ‘no magic’ excuse is clearly invalid.

Is a mage’s powers unlocked in the same way that a vessel’s powers are? Can someone sense magical ability before a person’s powers are unlocked? If so, wouldn’t the paranormal world test/monitor all potential candidates to ensure that their secret is kept and that the young mages and vessels would be prepared for their roles in the paranormal society?

Also, what about this book made it a ‘regency’? Is there a Regent in play here? We never actually heard if the monarch was a minor. The only reference was that one duke was related to the royal family. Every Regency romance that I’ve read has had, perhaps, a pre-marital embrace, but no heat otherwise - which, in no way, describes this book.

It took me some time to get used to the narration, and I expected to struggle with the book as a whole. But I didn't, really. It's true that both MCs are exaggerated, and Fen giggled and sighed a bit too much. But the spice was hot, the change in Xander was just slow and believable enough, and there is angst both in and outside the relationship. In the end, I swooned and was so happy these two got their HEA.

The characters that were introduced are intriguing, and I can't wait for their stories and maybe a redemption arc for some. Because, yep, there are some questionable characters who have suffered for their actions already, but I can't wait to see them suffer a bit more.

If you're in for a steamy and slightly exaggerated story of two stepbrothers who fall in love, then dig in!

4.5 ★ from me on this one. I really liked this unique enemies to lovers story. Xander is the elitist mage who is the definition of arrogant. Granted it's hard not to be when you have loads of money, a title, are a very powerful mage, and your father and your peers are the same. Can't ruin the family name you know. So while it is sad that Fen never knew his supposed family, I think he got the better end of the deal. Great schools, great education, hefty allowance, not to mention killer looks. He seemingly had it all.

But being the illegitimate child of the Earl's second wife, Fen's "family" shipped him off. He spent years alone waiting for someone to visit, call, write on his birthday and holidays. So while there are some deep seeded abandonment issues buried in Fen, he is fairly well adjusted and enjoys his life. Xander turns all that upside down when he shows up and carts Fen off to the family estate to sell him into an arranged marriage, and he wasn't very nice about it. While not at each other throats, Xander's upbringing taught him how to hide his emotions and not let them get to him. But Fen just keeps finding the smallest cracks and stirring up Xander's insides. So of course Xander lashes out with hurtful words, which then make him feel guilty, which is also very confusing for him. Viscous cycle.

But like all opposites, they attract each other and the tension is high. So it's no wonder Xander decides to just sleep with Fen to "get it out of his system", because that is always the answer. And wouldn't you know it, Fen has loads of magic, he just can't use it. So not only has Fen's worth sky rocketed, but Xander's one taste will not be enough. Let the jealousy and drama begin! So why not 5 stars? Because the magic part of the book is basically a very loose tie to make arranged marriages in the present day seem reasonable. Besides a parlor type trick at the beginning, and 2 small instances where people are frozen, and a spoiler part (while impactful to the story, it isn't a big elaborate thing), you can take the magic out of this story and it be the same.

I love a good twist on something and you don’t see many modern regency stories. I also enjoyed the whole magic with mage/vessel relationship idea. This was a really good book. I loved these characters, especially the way they grew throughout the book. I was quickly hooked and will have to look out for this whole series!

1.0 out of 5 stars the premise was promising but the actual book was a dissappointment

I didn't enjoy the writing all that much, there was just something missing. It was very basic and unpersonal.

The story is much like older Yaoi, with an incredebly imbalanced power dynamic, Dub-Con and Assault. All male side characters aside from the Top were just there to make him look better. But he was just awful. I went through the last 30% just to get it over with. I guess if you enjoy reading about toxic relationships, this is your thing.

It might get better after the first third of the book, but I was extremely uncomfortable with the blatant r*pey vibes and mistreatment of the MC while he just "likes it for whatever reason". Well-written but not a read for me.

I love this authors work and how each book is some how linked to the rest with a character or two popping up. Honestly it’s a fantastic set of stories that can be read alone but their work is too good not to find the read order. Highly recommended

This is a great story. It does have some fairly dark moments but they don’t last too long and there’s a steady stream of redeeming actions as events unfold. The author had me caring so much about the MCs, that I did worry a lot about what would happen to Fen, and the tension waiting to find out was excruciating. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Gostei muito... dessa história, mas, achei que o final ficou incompleto, talvez um prólogo. Mas amei o Fen, quanto ao Xander fiquei um pouco confusa com a personalidade dele😊
