Nils Ödlund is originally Swedish, but lives these days in Cork, Ireland. He's an avid reader, gamer, and fan of geek-culture.

Ödlund picked up writing as a hobby, almost by accident, back in 2010, and it quickly grew into something of an obsession. In 2017 he decided to get serious about it, and in early 2018, he published his debut novella Emma's Story. Since then he's been working on the Lost Dogs series.

When not writing, Ödlund enjoys hiking through the Irish countryside, reading, or playing games.

Unlike every other author in the history of all authors ever (citation needed), Ödlund does not have a cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this series
Reviewed in Germany on October 10, 2024
Lost Dogs is not your typical fantasy series: Yes, there are fantastical elements in the worldbuilding and in the story: elves, fylkin, theriantropes, magic,… But the focus shifted quickly to the two main characters Alene Moyena and Roy van Waldenberger, so lately I coined the term (at least according to me, and I’ll stick to it) ‘social psychology fantasy’ for this series. I really loved how the story changed and – in my humble opinion – evolved throughout the series and kept me engaged on the whole journey.

In Nothing Left to Lose we follow Alene who was separated from Roy (the other main character) and captured at the end of the last book. And at the very beginning of this book, author Nils Ödlund produced a twist that I did not expect at all, but I will try to keep this review spoilerfree. But kudos to Nils, I was actually shocked – and not just this one time.
Alene, however, keeps doing what she always does: She is trying to survive. And to do that she has to fight all the time at every moment for everything: She is a theriantrope – and not just any kind, but the most dangerous. She is a woman. She is dark-skinned. And she is utterly alone. So, while constantly battling her inner demon to not overcome her, she is treated with extreme prejudice and discrimination wherever she goes. Everyone around her is wary, aggressive, or belittling. And, of course, she reacts to it. So, this story and everything happening is not just about her (or Roy), it’s at least as much about the society they live in.
Both main characters in Lost Dogs are trying to redeem themselves in different ways. While on this road to redemption, they gradually have to learn that it works both ways and that they also have to give other people and themselves a second chance – or at least the benefit of the doubt.

While the Lost Dogs-series ends here, it’s (hopefully) not the end of the story. At least, the ending gives room for a sequel (that I would love to read right away) and there are still enough lose threads.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heart-breaking, gripping, edge of the seat journey that I absolutely loved.
Reviewed in India on March 16, 2022
I'll start this review by saying, I don't think I would have ever guessed the direction in which this series would go from the 'Rocky meets Wolverine' vibe of the fist volume - Last Fight of the Old Hound.

Saying it was unexpected would be the understatement of the year. Totally, absolutely and completely unexpected in a downright astonishing awesome way. The action-packed ring fight of a werewolf wrestling champion slowly but surely turned into a journey of redemption of two lost souls trying to find a purpose and a place to belong to. And much more. A heart-breaking, gripping, edge of the seat journey that I absolutely loved.

This last (for now) part of the series, focuses on Alene and beautifully wraps everything up leaving a great opening for the sequel. One that I wish I could already have my hands on.

Captive and alone, Alene has literally nothing left to lose. Her meagre possessions, her freedom and even her beast are gone. Her future seems like a dark hole with nowhere to go but down. And it broke my heart to see her go through all that sorrow and pain. Seen as nothing but trash, something to be discarded and thrown away, with no will to do anything and no strength to go anywhere... Damn! That was quite the wringer she was put through and quite difficult to witness at times.

Pushed and pulled by forces outside her control, Alene is turned into someone she didn't know and given a second chance. A chance to start over from scratch, figure out who she was and who she wanted to be, and build herself anew. But for that she might need to become a different kind of monster. If she chooses to embrace her new fate that is.

Adrift in a world that fears and resents her, Alene is forced to face head on not only the fear, prejudice and hatred of others, but also her own. And the psychological aspect of her tale is masterfully done. The rollercoaster of emotion - from fear and regret to loss and loneliness, then hope and determination, everything is impressively outlined. You not only witness Alene's struggles but also FEEL the whole range of emotions with and for her. Cheff's kiss for the way the author pulls this off! I am officially impressed!

Unlike some of the previous instalments, where the action took some time to kick off, this part of The Lost Dogs series is an irresistible mix of action, character development and psychological analysis. A heady mix that can become a bit overwhelming and easily unbalanced if not properly done, but perfectly achieved over here.

By far the best of the series for me, Nothing Left To Lose is a splendid conclusion to a tale I've grown to love. It's not the end per se, since more books are planned for Roy and Alene, but as far as I understand from the author's note at the end, those volumes will be part of a new series.

If you're a fan of good fantasy with badass gripping action, great characters that leap from the page and a downright impressive insight into the human nature and mind, this series is worth a try.

It's a really fine read that will stay with you long after turning the last page.
