A Freak Among Freaks (Lost Dogs Book 3) Kindle Edition
"If I was careful I wouldn't be here in the first place."
Alene Moneya, aspiring young travel journalist, did not find the secret jungle temple her source told her about. Instead, she found herself stuck in a dead-end dump of a town, and with the full moon just two nights away.
Now she needs to find a safe place to shift and hunt or the consequences will be deadly, both for her and for whoever gets in her way.
At a dive bar at the edge of town, she finds Harold, the leader of the local pack. He's got no interest in letting outsiders in on his territory, and unless she can pay what he asks, she's not welcome. With no money to her name, Alene's only option is to accept an unexpected offer to help out at the bar.
Work hard. Keep smiling. Don't cause any trouble, and don't start a fight. Easier said than done when everyone wants to test the limits of the new girl.
She must keep it together though, or once the moon comes around there will be no one to control the mad beast within her.

About the author

Nils Ödlund is originally Swedish, but lives these days in Cork, Ireland. He's an avid reader, gamer, and fan of geek-culture.
Ödlund picked up writing as a hobby, almost by accident, back in 2010, and it quickly grew into something of an obsession. In 2017 he decided to get serious about it, and in early 2018, he published his debut novella Emma's Story. Since then he's been working on the Lost Dogs series.
When not writing, Ödlund enjoys hiking through the Irish countryside, reading, or playing games.
Unlike every other author in the history of all authors ever (citation needed), Ödlund does not have a cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars New main character in the series
I finally continued Nils Ödlund’s Lost Dogs-series that I enjoy so much. And once again, this book has a beautiful cover.
A Freak Among Freaks introduces a new main character. Whereas before we have followed Roy van Waldenberger, a champion in therianthropic fighting (think MMA with were-people), an older, experienced character who wants out of the business and nothing more than a normal life, now we have quite the opposite: Meet Alene Moneya. She is an aspiring travel-journalist in her early twenties, unfortunately without much success. She is a shapeshifter, too, and a very rare one at that. Even amongst other therianthropes she is somewhat of a legend, a mystery. Her latest search for a scoop leads her nowhere – and into a town in the middle of it. The problem is: Full moon is approaching. Her only options are to find a local pack which might take her on to go hunting with them or to go into a holding pen when her inner beast takes over – the latter not really being an option for Alene. If she cannot come up with a solution and soon, it will most likely get bloody for her and anyone standing in her way.
Alene is a great character. She is young, insecure, and looking for somewhere to belong. An identity. Friends. A pack. A career. A life. While Roy von Waldenberger experienced the glamorous sides of being a therianthrope, Alene Moneya has lost pretty much everything because of it: Friends, family, her old life. And since she is a rare species, she is not only an outsider among “normal” humans, but also among other therianthropes. She never accepted her inner beast and is fighting it constantly. She has lost much, but never gives up hope and never gives in. Even though her hopes are crushed time and time again.
Her inner struggle and of course her character in general are portrayed admirably. I went through all the ups, downs and sideways with her in the course of the book. Nils Ödlund simply writes great and interesting characters that you like and that you enjoy to follow along. He broadens this world we still don’t know much about by focusing on a different character with a different view, a different social standing, a different personality who also happens to be in a different part of the world.
I really enjoy this series and I cannot wait for the two characters to meet up (hopefully soon).
