About the author

For the latest updates on works in progress and other musings, please head to http://hlaurencelareau.com/blog/ to check out my blog--it's updated weekly. (Once I figure out the mechanics of feeding my blogs to this page, they'll show up below.)
H. Laurence Lareau fell in love with romances the first time Pride and Prejudice came home from the library with him. Since that high school summer, he has earned an English degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, worked as a broadcast journalist, built a career in law, and has remained a Jane Austen junkie through it all.
The Newsroom Romance series draws from his careers, his voracious reading, and his curiosity about the tensions between real life and real love.
Real life now is dramatically different from the real life of Austen’s times—privileged women no longer choose between eligible members of the landed gentry, nor are they imperiled by the sexist mysteries of the entailed fee simple estate in land.
Modern women with the privileges of education rather than birth now embark upon careers that can satisfy many personal and material dreams. Seemingly inevitably, though, they fall short of the promise that they’ll fulfill women as people.
Strong, modern women have defined Lareau’s professional and personal lives, and strong women fully occupy center stage in their newsroom romance stories. Their high-profile journalism and legal careers matter deeply to them and to the people they serve.
Then love comes walking in. These book boyfriends don’t have kilts or billions or pirate ships, though. Their career goals meet and often clash with their counterparts, requiring both the men and women to make hard choices about what happily ever after should look like and how to achieve it.
When he isn’t writing, practicing law, or raising children, he’s working on martial arts and music.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseRomance is not a genre to which I normally tend, but this book was exceptional. It kept me captivated and tantalized from one turn of the page to the next. The adventure and excitement of news reporting came alive through the eyes of the story’s dynamic duo: Karli and Jake. It was too easy falling in love with and alongside Jake and Karli, and too exciting to see what happens when the camera stops rolling (and the lights go out). They are beautiful characters inside and out, and flawed in ways that make them feel truly human. I never knew who I was rooting for because I sympathized with them both, but I knew had to find out what happened next. When I read the last page, I felt enticed, entertained, and satisfied.
If you think racy romance in the context of newsroom adventure sounds like a wild ride, you’re right! and Love. Local. Latebreaking. is just the story to deliver.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018Format: KindleVerified Purchasewould highly recommend this book of you enjoy well rounded characters with a touch of humor but romantic love. The characters build well through the story. The story flows so well and leaves you wanting to hear what happens next. I am definitely going to read more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis story has all the heart-tugging relational tension but with a sophistication that raises it above the romance genre. The behind-the-scenes look at newsroom life was an interesting setting for Karli and Jake's relationship to develop. Their passion for their work and their sense of social responsibility make both characters admirable. Additionally, the side stories were thought provoking. For instance, beside the obvious romance, there's the realization of the responsibility city planners have for the safety of their citizens. Also, Jake's grief scene, in which sweat substitutes for tears, was intensely effective and haunting. The ending of this story was very satisfying (I expect a happy ending when I invest in a romance novel!) It's hard not to cheer for Karli as she comes full circle from a disgruntled woman with a desire to make it "big" while resisting her dad's influence, to a woman who has learned exactly what she's all about, and what she's all about is oh-so-good! In the final scene....you'll wish you were having a drink with the girls celebrating their new loves!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseMr. Lareau has written a fun and romantic story set inside a TV newsroom, a place that I know very well, having been in radio and TV news for over two decades. In fact. the author and I worked in the same newsroom, but not at the same time. So as I read the book, I recognized the characters as composites of real people I had worked with at several stations. His descriptions of the pace and the details of the jobs are incredible. If you like romance novels and want to know what it's really like in the world of TV news, read this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book was highly recommended by a friend, and I'm so glad I read it! Being a lifelong Midwesterner, I was delighted with the setting of Iowa and the true-to-life characters living their lives in the Heartland. This is an intelligent and emotional story of a small group of newsroom colleagues doing what they do best as they bring an outsider into their fold. Karli and Jake embark on a journey -- professional, then personal -- that made me laugh and cry and left me wanting more. I certainly hope there will be more books from this author! Can't wait to find out what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI always love finding out what really goes on behind the scenes. I thought that the inside information about how newsrooms work was fascinating, so one nice surprise about this book is that I learned something too.
That was the yummy frosting on a cake that would have been delicious even without it. This was a big step up from a typical romance novel (although the... requisite scenes are wonderfully done). It was smart, sensitive, and real. Life can be messy and difficult (one reason that broadcast news was such a successful backdrop for the story) as well as joyful; all that was reflected in this novel in a way that really made me believe in the characters and care about them.
Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA friend of mine recommended that I read this book. Being out of my typical genre, I hesitated, but was pleasantly surprised. The character development is very good and I could associate with the characters very early in the book. I also used to work in video production so I could also relate with the "production life" aspects of the story. Looking forward to reading the next in the series!
