Must Love Breeches: A Time Travel Romance (Must Love Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 588 ratings

A USAToday bestseller. She's finally met the man of her dreams--too bad he lives in a different century!

A devoted history buff finds the re-enactment of a pre-Victorian ball in London a bit boring...until a mysterious artifact sweeps her back in time to the real event, and into the arms of a compelling British lord.

Isabelle Rochon can't believe it when she finds herself in the reality of 1830's London high society. She's thrilled to witness events and people she's studied. But she may also have to survive without modern tools or career--unless she can find a way to return to her time. And then there's Viscount Lord Montagu, a man whose embrace curls her toes, but who has a dangerous agenda of his own.

Lord Phineas Montagu is on a mission to avenge his sister, and he'll stop at nothing, including convincing an alluring stranger to pose as his respectable fiancé. He's happy to repay her by helping her search for her stolen calling card case that brought her back in time. But he doesn't bargain for the lady being his intellectual match--or for the irresistible attraction that flames between them.

They're both certain they know what they want, but as passion flares, Phineas must keep both himself and Isabella safe from unseen opponents, and she must choose when and where her heart belongs. Can they ever be together for good?

Clever, original, and so good
4.5 Top Pick Angela Quarles's Must Love Breeches is clever, original, and so good that you want more as soon as you put it down. It's a delicious mash up with something for time travel romance lovers, Jane Austen devotees, and those who simply enjoy a fresh take on historical romance. Her unique premise combines the best elements of contemporary and historical romance, while incorporating all of the fish-out-of-water elements a time travel romance. I love that her heroine, Isabelle, doesn't simply stop being a modern woman because she's transported to the past. And it's even better that Isabelle loves history and has some sense of what living in the past might entail, even though the reality of it isn't always quite what she expected. And the hero, Phineas, is quite the adventurer in his own right. He has an adventurous spirit and one open to the oddities he perceives in Isabelle. The inclusion of a historical figure, Ada Lovelace, as a secondary character only makes the story that much richer. Most of all, I was impressed with Quarles's ability to combine so many elements so seamlessly and successfully. Isabelle thinks and views the world as a modern woman. Her reactions are modern, and yet Phineas's world and attitudes are thoroughly grounded in the 19th century. And through it all, Quarles manages to thread freshness and humor, making a novel a complete delight. When British Museum employee Isabelle Rochon is transported back in time to 19th century England, she initially revels in the new experience, but Phineas, Lord Montagu, proves a distraction she could not anticipate. As their attraction grows, she must decide where she truly belongs. Review by: Christy Carlyle Disclosure: Review copy from the publisher for an honest review.

Must Love Breeches is a light hearted time-travel HR — a reverse Kate and Leopold, where a modern girl with baggage, ends up in 1834 London. With fine writing and a witty plot, it grabbed me from the start!

But, to be completely honest, I was prepared to be disappointed, since so many of the books with a similar plot have usually failed due to overly plucky and strident heroines, who come across as arrogant or TSTL. Fortunately, Angela Quarles is a terrific writer who handles this tricky sub-genre with a deft hand. Bravo!

The lead heroine, Isabelle, is a history professional. She loves Austen, and the British Museum, and all things antique. Upon finding herself in London in 1834, her reactions — and her denial — feel real, and not at all overdone. And as the implications of her situation dawn on her, that she is truly stuck there, it’s fun to watch her find her footing amid all the pitfalls of trying to pass as someone from another age. (I particularly enjoyed watching while she tried to remember what she'd read in novels and history books!)

The narration by Mary Jane Wells, is extremely well done, and worthy of the story, as she enhances the experience of the book immensely. While she initially reads Isabelle with a flat American accent, but soon softens it, as the character makes an effort to sound more like the people around her, and her American accent becomes very pleasant to listen to. VERY WELL DONE, indeed!

(I shudder to think what a less skilled narrator could have done to this book, and hope Ms. Quarles chooses to continue to use MJW!)

The romance, particularly the sex scene, is a masterpiece. Beautifully written and performed, and true to the era in which it occurs, it held me enthralled. Phineas, (great name!) is a true gentleman of his time, and behaves accordingly, showing all the care and respect one would expect, without stepping back from the passion when it counts. I loved how true to the situation that scene was, perhaps more so when compared to those in many of the usual HR’s, where rakes normally prevail. I found it deeply affecting, romantic, and very sexy. I think Ms Quarles is very talented.

Naturally, there is a mystery, with dastardly bad guys, and enough action to keep the book moving at a good steady clip, but it never overwhelms the romance, and gives 1834 London it’s due in atmosphere and description, peopled as it is with great thinkers of it's age. Neither does it become overly violent or unduly melodramatic, which I appreciated. The Epilogue ties things up nicely, and is not to be missed.

There is another book in this series, Must Love Chainmail, and as I do, I can’t wait to read it. I hope it will come to Audible very soon, with Mary Jane Wells, or someone equally talented, doing the narration. Enjoy!

    Highly Recommended.

FYI: I was very fortunate to receive this book (from Audiobookblast) for an honest review. Lucky me!

First off, this is a time travel romance novel. The heroine travels back to 1834. She's in London. I have to address the epilogue before I get into my thoughts of the book. I hated the epilogue; well, mainly the last three paragraphs. Here's the quote that riled me up: "And in 1973 she would travel back and start her life here." 'She' is the heroine Isabelle Rochon. The same heroine that had a cell phone capable of taking photographs. There weren't cell phones in 1973 [also her contact lenses were advanced for 1973]. This is somewhat reconciled by the subsequent line: "Whether she'd shifted the timeline in subtle ways or not, she'd never know." So apparently she altered the world she lived in; smart phones were invented twenty to thirty years later in the real world. Since she knew about cell phones, her life was on some sort of loop where the phones and the internet were always available in the year 1973. The throwaway line at the end of the book stating Isabelle travelled back in time in the year 1973 ruined the epilogue for me. If there was some hint at the beginning of the book that the year was 1973 and Isabelle had a cell phone, that would have been an awesome foreshadowing moment. But tossing it in at the end of the book makes it seem like an afterthought, like "hey, let's say she went back in time before cell phones existed, so the reader knows her time jump really affected the world."

I have other issues with the time travel aspects of the book. Isabelle searches for a way to return to her time, always assuming that once she time travels again, she'll return to 1973. Not only will it be 1973 when she returns, she assumes that every day she spends in 1834 will be a day that goes by in 1973 without her there. Why does she assume that? Firstly, if I thought I'd return to the year I left, I would assume I'd return moments later, regardless of the time spent in the past. Secondly, I wouldn't be confident that another time traveling moment would return me to where I came from; it could just as easily send me back even further in time. I do not believe that time travel is possible; I realize it is science fiction/fantasy. Even so, I would have preferred the heroine was a little less confident that she knew how this time travel stuff worked. Or if she had been confident, it would have been fun to see her expectations turn out wrong.

Isabelle writes letters [in 1834] to her friend Katy [in 1973] telling her to take care of a cat and tell her boss what was going on, with the intent that Katy would get these letters via her bank. Okay. Fine. But once Isabelle knew what she was going to do, why didn't she throw away the letters she wrote when she wasn't sure what was going on? The reader learned information by reading these letters, but the whole "time travel on a loop" deal and these letters didn't seem to make sense to me.

Setting aside all the issues I had with the logistics of the time travel aspect of the plot, I thoroughly enjoyed Must Love Breeches. It was a fun read. The romance between the hero and the heroine developed at a nice pace. The heroine was quirky and likable. The hero was manly and kind. The writing style made for easy reading. If you're not as nit-picky about time travel as I apparently am, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

First, I want to rave about the narrator, Mary Jane Wells. She always does a perfect job on every audiobook, and this is no exception. I think that she is the best female narrator that I have ever come across. I have previously listened to her work on "Must Love Chainmail" in this series and Lisa Kleypas' newest series including "Marrying Winterbourne", and she did a perfect job on all of them. Her regular voice for nonspeaking parts is an elegant, musical alto with a refined English accent. She is fantastically talented at male voices; she makes Lord Montagu sound so hot! Her American accents are very accurate as well. Every character's voice is distinctive in some way. The pacing and emotion are also top notch.

Now, I will try to convey how engaging, compelling, exciting, cute, and funny this book is. Angela Quarles is my favorite time travel romance writer partly because she has a nice balance between funny and serious moments. Also, she does really good research on the time period so that there are all kinds of cool details. In addition, I love how she has the modern heroine, Isabel, having to deal with all of the practical considerations of living in another time period, including adjusting her way of speech, finding somewhere to live, and learning the proper manners. She also meets some minorly famous historical figures, such as the very nice daughter of Lord Byron. The plot takes some unpredictable twists and turns. I like how both Isabel and Phineas grow as people during the story. They both have their foibles, but nothing too irritating, and their interactions were great. I recommend this audiobook to everyone who loves a good time travel romance. This author rocks!

I read yesterday that this author just won this year's RITA for "Must Love Chainmail" (the sequel to this book) Then I checked my Kobo and Kindle and found out I had purchased all her books (based on reading "Beer and Groping in Las Vegas" and liking it) but just hadn't read them. I tend to check reviews and buy books that sound good when I can afford them, then read them later.

So I decided to read this series in order - as I usually like to do - and what an excellent time travel romance this is ! Well written and interesting with some sultry romance scenes and excellent historical details. The end really threw me - I didn't see that coming - and it made me smile.

    A new auto-buy author for me !!

After reading As You Wish, I liked, I have a thought to check this author’s other works but with a kindle full of hundred of unread books, I forgot!
    Sorry, mea culpa ....
Actually I’m in full trip time travel romance, new category for me. And today i got one of the other newsletters, I remembered my first reading, so I checked her other works, and lucky me.
So here I’m, some hours later!
It was definitively worst my time, i so enjoyed this time travel novel.
From Isabelle’s difficulties to believe then adapt to her new reality, to her inability to project herself in staying in this past period, I was never bored nor annoyed. She reacted as I probably would have and even better.
I imagine me running in circles hands up screaming, surely my best reaction.
And Phineas, what a wonderful man, rather flawed but still a man of honor, ready to accept any choice the woman he loves will make.
The plot mixes many different characters all the more interesting than the others, from the nice Ada Byron to Mr Babbage.
So if you like time travel romance with strong women and kind alpha men, this is one book for you.
I have read some review about the mobile phone and the original time of the heroine but if you take the time to read the author’s explanations at the end of the book, all is well explained.
Now I can’t wait to read more about her parallel time continuum stories.

Isabelle finds a silver calling card case and journal under the floorboards of the house she buys in Guildford. She goes to a reenactment ball and decides to take the calling card case with her. While fingering the card case, she wishes she was actually at the 1834 ball and suddenly finds herself there. One of the people she meets is Ada Byron, who takes her in and helps her. Isabelle is instantly attracted to Ada's cousin Lord Montagu. Her calling card case is stolen by a street urchin and Lord Montagu promises to try and find it for her. Isabelle realises that without the card case she will not be able to go back to her own time, but as the days wear on she finds herself more and more attracted to Lord Montagu.

I loved the novel and have just ordered the next two novels in Angela Quarles' "Must love" series.
