Mad About the Hatter (Mad About the Hatter Books Book 1) Kindle Edition
Henry never believed his older sister, Alice’s, fantastic tales about the world down the rabbit hole. When he’s whisked away to the bizarre land, his best chance for escape is to ally himself with the person called the Mad Hatter. Hatter—an odd but strangely attractive fellow—just wants to avoid execution. If that means delivering “Boy Alice” to the Queen of Hearts at her Red Castle, Hatter will do what he has to do to stay alive. It doesn’t matter if Henry and Hatter find each other intolerable. They’re stuck with each other.
Along their journey, Henry and Hatter must confront what they’ve always accepted as truth. As dislike grows into tolerance and something like friendship, the young men see the chance for a closer relationship. But Wonderland is a dangerous place, and theyfirst have to get away with their lives

About the author

Dakota Chase writes stories of the fantastical, of ghosts and monsters, and time travel. She lives right on the border of Normal, and has been known to take quick trips into the next town over, Crazy, although she usually finds her way home again without little trouble. She shares her home with "Nibbles," her Shar Pei/Labrador mix breed that may or may not be a werewolf in disguise, and a husband who definitely isn't a werewolf even though he's been known to be shaggy, and howl from time to time. She has four grown children, one of whom has spawned, resulting in two grandchildren whom she adores. When she isn't writing, Dakota likes to crochet odd things, like killer shark slippers and skull dolls. She loves sushi, spicy foods, and grapes, but is highly allergic to any form of math.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2016My only regret after reading this book is that I didn't read it sooner. This is a delightful addition to the long list of stories about Wonderland. I hope the author writes more books in this series. Hatter and Henry's adventures in our world need to be told.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024This story was a lot of fun to read. Alice’s brother is now in Wonderland. He has a grand adventure with the Hatter. This is a young adult books with some kissing and a couple of bad words. This is a delightful tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. #CMCon25
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2016Lets just say if the original Wonderland books are as lyrical and word-twisting as this was, I have been missing out because I absolutely adored Wonderland in this book. While I have not read any Wonderland, what I do know is from OUAT's spin off Once Upon A Time in Wonderland which was phenomenal and I wish was still on, but it does do That Wonderland justice. While I may not know Alice very well, reading all about Henry's adventure in Wonderland with Hatter & co. was positively delightful.
There were so many quotes, I dont even know where to begin. From mind-puzzling quotes, to ones that do the dear Lewis Carroll & other authors proud and ones all about judging society in our world about acceptance of people and the like. I only rented an ebook from my library so I was unable to highlight and truly bookmark quotes I liked but i had plenty of page bookmarks to remind myself of where they were located. And this is not a very big book.
The Hatter was positively delightful with his topsy turvy sentences and any answer Henry asked of him. He was definitely a favorite character.
I really liked how they incorporated canon from Alice in Wonderland and seemlessly made it seem like she had a younger brother the entire time. PLus she even got to make a cameo or to witha positively perfect nod to Lewis Carroll via her twins.
This book does feature an LGBT romance where I believe, if i read correctly, both boys were Bisexual. If i remember correctly, they both seemed to reference previous interest in both sexes so neither of them was singularly gay. I do not read many books with LGBT+ MC's so I dont know how it's normally portrayed but I thought this was seamless and not made to seem like it was a gimmick or big flashy thing. Kind of like how The 100 handled Clarke being BISEXUAL. It was just something that happened in the show as much as Bellamy being a leader or Lincoln being just all around awesome.
Overall I really loved the book and almost immediately went on to Amazon and purchased a physical copy since in January i will have to return my ebook copy to the library.
I am incredibly greatful to the 12 Days of Diversity Read-a-thon because I wouldn't have found out about this book any other way.
Definitely recommend to fans of anything Wonderland related whether it's the SyFy Show, OUATIW, the Cartoon, or the books.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2017This is a fantastic fantastical story! Maybe not the AIW that we all know and love, but this Wonderland is every bit as wonderful and frightening. The world that Dakota Chase has written is so well developed. I could envision the sights, imagine smelling the smells (both the good and the bad) and feel the feels. Very well written. And the characters... the MCs, Henry and Hatter were a delight to read/listen to as they navigate their way through Wonderland as well as through the beginning of their relationship. They are both thoroughly lovable with their quick wit and charm. Even their faults were just minor quirks that made them even more lovable and believable as characters in the world of Wonderland.
The secondary characters were amazing. Some cute, some scary and all with little twists that make them more than what they appear to be. In fact the whole of Wonderland is more than it appears. I love that I got the feeling that I was the one on the adventure right next to Henry and Hatter.
The narration:
I've listened to several stories narrated by Joel Froomkin (aka Joel Leslie) and I have enjoyed them all, but this story... this story was MADE for him to narrate! Absolute perfection!
I loved this story so much that I bought it in both ebook and audiobook versions so I can have it forever.
If you like YA, if you like fantasy, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely bad
This book was extremely bad. Not just poorly written and with spelling errors, but the story itself and the romance was so bad. The characters and the plot was not interesting. I didn’t root for the characters and flipped the pages, waiting for this hell to be over.
Was I the only one who didn’t really get wonderland vibes from this book? I’ve read the book and watched the movies, and this was a huge disappointment. It felt like the author just came up with strange ideas and labeled it Wonderland just because it was strange. The only thing that was Wonderland was the names of the characters, but the characters themselves didn’t feel like the characters they were supposed to be. Hatter wasn’t ‘mad’ enough, I didn’t get that Wonderland vibe from him or any other character for that matter. And not to mention that Hatter was grumpy or mean on several occasions as well, since when is hatter grumpy or mean.
There was no depth to any of the characters. The problems they had were resolved immediately. Alice and Henry’s lifelong hatred towards each other was resolved within minutes, it felt so unreal. The book focuses to much on unimportant things instead of the plot. The only thing they did was walk, we got to see many parts of ‘Wonderland’ and in the end it was so boring. There was no action. This book is just a big ‘no’ for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just ok
Fun but forgettable. I did enjoy the sweet romance between the boys, though.
