FROM POPULAR AUTHOR OF LGBTQIA ROMANCE FICTION PETER E. FENTON

Book one in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series

How far would you be willing to go to finish the job?

Declan Hunt is having a bad week. His kidnapping case is showing little progress, his office assistant has left him on short notice, and his latest investigation has left him literally battered and bruised. But things change when he hires twenty-four year old Charlie Watts to help out at the office. They form an unlikely partnership trying to solve two seemingly unrelated cases whose threads begin to weave together when the missing person case turns to murder.

The investigation takes them from the dark alleys, gay bars and bath houses of Calgary, to the richest parts of the city during the world-famous Calgary Stampede.

But will they be able to discover who the killer is before another life is lost? And will Declan be able to solve the mystery of his relationship with Charlie who is clearly attracted to him — especially since it is evident that the attraction is becoming mutual?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Declan Hunt is good at solving mysteries, but cracking the case of his evolving relationship with his new office assistant Charlie Watts is proving to be more challenging than expected.

This three part detective series is filled with emotional twists and turns, crimes of passion and an unlikely partnership that simmers beneath the surface.

Declan and Charlie's adventures take them from the skyscrapers of downtown Calgary, to The Badlands of Drumheller and onward to the rugged mountains of The Canadian Rockies.

But will these cases bring them together or tear them apart?

You'll have to read to the very end to find out.

I am proud that all of my books are set in Canada ... a perfect location for romance and mystery.

Bland, Inconsistent, Unlikable Characters, Flawed Mystery

Bland, Inconsistent, Unlikable Characters, Flawed Mystery
This was clumsy and inconsistent, with some moments that didn’t make sense and a lack of internal life for the main character PI, which was disappointing because there were some moments in the dialogue that were genuinely likable and charming; there’s definitely potential to write something better in the future. To be clear, I am a fan of and spend money supporting multiple independent authors, particularly gay or otherwise queer mystery authors. I own over 30 Gregory Ashe books on audiobook alone, not to mention other authors or books I own both digitally and physically. I am a fan of the genre and of many authors who aren’t published by major publishers, and am more than willing to put my money to it for a quality story. I wish this was one! The author needed to address some issues, like 5 POV in the first 4 chapters, some of which never appear again as characters. They add no depth, take tension away from the plot by revealing things our characters don’t know, and make it confusing and take longer to connect to the characters since they aren’t the first perspectives we meet. There would be moments or ideas that could’ve been good. We are introduced to Charlie with a brief description that he’s not out to his family but hoping to have a chance to see a hot guy by telling a plumbing company their family doesn’t like older guys to service their home due to a past home invasion, and then a woman is sent instead. That could’ve been comedic if we got the scene, if that was our real introduction to him. Instead we got a page info dump on his life, which references it, but we don’t have any phone call, any moment of him opening the door and being like “Where’s the hot guy?” any interaction at all with the plumber, etc. we are just informed all this happened but we don’t get to see it. Also, he’s in his mid-twenties and later goes to a gay bar. It’s not like he’s 12 and trying to manipulate his way into seeing a potentially fit guy to stare at. He’s good looking, an adult, has transportation, and goes to a bar that same day. Another missed opportunity was having a 4 page POV of a secretary who is about to go on vacation. We learn she’s in an office in a building checking mail, and then the PI comes in looking disheveled. He jokes he looks homeless and says he was thrown in a dumpster. She knows it’s him and moves on immediately. Why is it her perspective? She recognizes him so there’s no joke, she’s not important, and immediately goes on vacation out of the country to free up her job. If it was Charlie’s perspective, as a first meeting that could’ve been comedic, waiting for a job interview not knowing what his new boss looked like and thinking some random walked in from the street and not believing him when he claimed to be his boss, etc. There was also more time spent on the chemistry less romance love triangle than on our main characters; it was mostly Charlie thinking silently that the PI was hot and occasionally remembering the PI is dating someone else and then being rude to him. No one is all that likable honestly except the nice baker stepmom. Charlie at one point uses PI’s washcloth to "take care of himself" in his boss's shower and makes the conscience choice to leave it dirty with fluids in his shower so his boss / love interest who he isn’t dating will be tricked into unwittingly rubbing Charlie’s dried fluids on him the next day. This violation is never mentioned again. Why did that scene happen? That’s insane. There were ideas, but almost none were executed well, and the plot fell apart at points (it’s never clear why the guy kidnapped didn’t want to sell a dilapidated building for a huge profit when he was being aggressively threatened, for example. He was supposed to be sentimentally attached to it when it was a burden he inherited that forced him to stop his dream job, and when he desperately needs the money). At other times we see scenes from a side characters perspective and then it’s immediately described again to us. And potential tension is gone by seeing all these other perspectives for random 4 page chunks. The author needs an editor willing to give edits for these weird distracting moments, and to say “that sounds like a fun scene, let’s actually write it instead of informing the audience it happened off page.” I received a free reader review copy from BookSirens and am leaving this review of my own free will.

This story is one of the best gay detective novels I have read in a very long time. The placement of the story is interesting, and provides a great back drop for the storyline. The author's narratives between the characters is believable, smart and sometimes witty and funny! I did not see the "who done it" until the reveal...which was very surprising had I not remembers all the little clues the author left all over the storyline! I have all ready ordered up book two in the series (The Declan Hunt Mysteries: Hoodoo House), and have book three on my wishlist! The author has shown great creativity in a growing market of gay private detective stories!

To begin I appreciated that the main characters found other people attractive. I always hate it when they act like no one else exist. That said I was hoping for a bit connection between Charlie and Declan but I’m open to it building up more in the second book.

Second, this book really nails (no pun intended) sexy without graphic. Don’t get me wrong, I like graphic but it takes skill to be sexy and filthy (in the best of ways) without graphic detail.

And lay, the mystery part was brilliant.

My first step into reading a Peter E. Fenton book. A step I thoroughly enjoyed. Declan Hunt and Charlie Watts are a perfect fit.
In working their first mystery together they blend their respective strengths, which aids in solving a rather complicated case.
Charlie is eager to prove himself in this temporary job and right away shows how invaluable he can be.
Declan is an experienced private investigator but at times is not quite the intuitive investigator you'd expect him to be. His blind spots seem to be related to his private life interfering with his professional life. When he drinks, it seems to be in excess. When he chances into an intimate encounter, he does so with surface connection, taking these encounters at face value.
Hopefully, as this series continues, the blending of their respective strengths will overshadow any personal weaknesses.
I did thoroughly enjoy this first foray into The Declan Hunt Mysteries and look forward to the next book in this series.
Peter E. Fenton's writing is smooth and his storyline is compelling. It is also refreshing that this series is entirely set in our neighbor to the north, Canada. I'm looking forward to learning more about Canada from someone who lives there.

Peter Fenton has struck just the right combination of mystery, romance, clever and surprising plot, masculinity, intelligence, and even occasional humor in this novel, his best so far. He avoids the tendency to graphic and gratuitous cruelty, violence and sex that occasionally mars some American authors in this gay genre. It reminds me a bit of British writers I have enjoyed over the years. I look forward to the series. The Canadian setting is refreshing, especially for this ex-pat.

A friend recommended this series. The hero Declan Hunt is flawed and fascinating. His sidekick Charlie is a jack of all trades. Their adventures take them from gay bathhouses to mansions, seedy bars to back alleys. A fun read!

I was captivated from the opening pages.
This is a well written suspsense story, with great dialogue between the characters and great character development, especially with Charlie (and his crush). The murder/mystery itself is was really interesting, a few red herrings that kept me guessing wrong until the end. Declan, the other MC, is a genuinely good guy, well liked.
I can't wait to read more about the budding romance between Declan and Charlie, but more importantly, I can't wait to read more about them and the detective agency period. Highly recommend!!!

There are multiple POVs throughout, not just the MCs, so the reader sees what is happening to specific characters at that moment in time. It's nice to see, but I also felt distanced from them for some reason. It reminded me of some of the British crime shows where you see flashes of the crime(s) at the beginning, and then follow the detectives as they try to figure out what happened. I liked that the relationship between Declan and Charlie was more business than romance, at least for now. Overall, I liked the story and would be willing to read more in the series.

I noted only 1 or 2 proofreading issues in the ARC.

This was amazing!!! Loved the book and the whole story and characters.
Canada is so close to my heart and reading about it in a book gives me such warmth. Also, the book has a variety of interesting and multicultural characters.

Lovable main characters!!! Especially my poor Charlie. He is such an adorable guy. There is a very slight hint of romance at the end. It is more about longing and pining from one side.

Not sure how I stumbled across this book, but I’m glad I did as I really enjoyed it.

It was slightly different as it was told in a pov that I’m not used to but once I realised that all of the characters’s actions were being described I just went along with it.

Charlie is in the closet and back to living with his parents, he’s jobless after university and by pure chance gets an offer to work in a detective agency.

Declan Hunt is a gorgeous gay detective that works on LBGTQ+ cases. After his secretary has a heart attack, he’s pleased when Charlie shows up with great skills. The case they’re working on is more complex than it seems and the more they find the bigger the case gets. There’s lots going on and it keeps you guessing.

There was heat but it didn’t dominate the story which is focused on the detective part which was so enjoyable for a change. I liked how the mcs characters developed over the book and can’t wait to continue with this series.

What is sleep when you are drawn into an amazing book?
I can’t praise Mann Hunt enough, I have read The Woodcarver’s Model which was a 5-star read and a book that I couldn’t put down.

Mystery, Suspense, Slow Burn romance, Banter which is glorious, Kidnapping …
The Investigation is written superbly, did I discover who was the culprit ! Not saying!

The main characters Declan Hunt PI, and his office assistant Charlie Watts make a formidable team, completely different souls but kindness and caring seep from them both.

The writing is magnificent with wonderful descriptions giving me visions of all that was happening.
The evidence of attraction between Declan and Charlie is evident.

Both guys are extremely complex but they are more than interesting...
There is fabulous humour plus the beginning of a romance that is written exceedingly well, I will wait patiently for books two and three.

    An excellent book!
