WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

This book is an interesting follow on to Cal losing the love of his life. It focuses mainly on Daniel though. But I suspect everyone has been changed and we will see more of the changes in the future books.

This series has been great at staying fresh but ripping your heart out at the same time. I dinged this one a star because I am finding all the flashbacks in this book and the previous book to be too distracting. New cast of characters to focus the story on with little hints to the regulars. Not as much action in this book compared to the others. Seemed to be more setting the table for future stories.

Matters of State picks up where The Man From Belarus left off. I do not want to ruin the book for others, so I just have a few quick thoughts to share...

    C. G. Cooper is a master at the art of storytelling. He seems to effortlessly interweave the subplots and main plot into an intriguing and satisfying read (I am quite sure that it is not as easy as he makes it look). I read this in one session, the curiosity and suspense kept me turning the pages until the early morning hours...

Nothing is ever what it seems to be and it is hard to know who to trust... Just when you think you know everything about everyone, you will learn something that leaves you searching for more answers... A person's past may not be perfect, but it has helped shaped the human that they are today — good or bad...

AfterThought: The book skips back and forth from the 1970s to present day, but I had no problem keeping up because Mr. Cooper clearly labels each chapter to tell you what character is involved, the date and location...

C.G. Cooper is a master storyteller and his latest thriller, Matters of State, is one of his best. The novel is peppered with familiar characters, fascinating locations, formidable villains.
The newly appointed Director of the CIA harbors a deadly grudge. The Russian President needs large sums of money quickly to rebuild his army. Together, the two long-time, secret, and unlikely friends create havoc across the globe.
In Paris, Cal Stokes and his Uncle Adam search for a spy killer. On a Florida beach, Daniel protects a close and dear friend from his past. Ultimately, the paths of the two Corps Justice warriors converge during a chilling crisis with unexpected results.
The book popped up on my Kindle a minute or two after midnight. I thought I’d take a short peek at the first page or two. Oh, but no! I confess I couldn’t put the book down! C. G. Cooper delivers a compelling, well-written story filled with suspense, intrigue, and danger, along with several surprises.
I enthusiastically recommend this exciting reading opportunity from C.G. Cooper! Matters of State is truly a remarkable novel.

I don’t know how C. G. cooper can keep putting out these books. Each and book in the Corps Justice Series can be a stand alone book, but having all of them is great. I love the way each book, shows the reader more insight into the men and women of SSI and the Jefferson Group. These are books I can’t put down. Once you start you are excited to read the next book…ok, on to book 18!

Cooper suddenly Jas decided that Cal needed a relative do he introduces a brother of his deciesd father. A significant portion of the book was devoted to hos history. This part of the book was not particularly interesting.
  • Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020
I have enjoyed all of Cooper’s books and characters. That being said, I found this book somewhat choppy and disjointed as it jumped back and forth between characters, locations, events, and time periods. Perhaps I read too fast. I had to go back and re-read a number of sections to figure out the motivations behind various actions that didn't make sense to me the first time through.

Other than demonstrating Flap’s desire to research Cal’s companions, all the chapters devoted to Springer and background info on Daniel seemed like unnecessary and irrelevant filler. Then at the end, there was Daniel’s uncharacteristic indecisiveness followed by “simmering anger at the world.” Huh?

Then there was the mystery of Wilcox’s ability to learn the location of Anna, rescue her, and later “resolve” the issue with the Russian President. That seemed far-fetched, and although it will produce a world-wide impact, it’s not really a part of the Corps Justice story.

C.G. Cooper had done it again. The continuing story of Cal and his crew. Missed opportunities for love, seeing past actions come full circle, rescue friends and find the head of the snake. Must read! 17 books in and still have a story that catches you and makes you hang in there to see what's next.

I love the Cal stokes stories and characters and have thoroughly enjoyed all the previous books.
However I found this one quite trying to focus on, its just my personal preference, but I don’t like books that keep time hopping, I find it disjointed trying to keep up with the towing and froing
That said I can perhaps see why this was done in order to provide several back stories for future progression, and to try a different style of presentation/ creativity for the author.
