Reverse Age Gap Is Not For Me
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5️⃣0️⃣ I struggled to keep going with this book. The reverse age gap is not for me. I could not have been more uninterested in this story. It took about 2 weeks for me to power through, in comparison to the 2 - 4 days I typically spend reading a single book. That aside, I still enjoyed this book to an extent. The writing is really good, as is the character dialog. Despite not caring for the main trope, I cared enough about the characters to want to know how everything would work out for them.     Yet again, Hunting delivers a character-driven novel with all the smiles and emotional hooks. But before anything, the cover has to be mentioned. Isn't it stunning? And the title for Maverick Waters and Clover Sweet's rollercoaster of a tale couldn't have been more perfect. 

    I was smitten with Maverick Waters a while back, and after finishing Little Lies, the first standalone in the Lies, Hearts & Truths series, I couldn't wait for Hunting to tell his story. So, it's time to see if there's not only a woman who'd be able to bring him to his knees but also find out how he's coping with past and present issues.

    Maverick and Clover Sweet's first encounter had me grinning from ear to ear. But let’s fast forward a bit—surprise! They find themselves in an awkward situation which needs addressing. Although Maverick gave me the impression of being flirtatious and lighthearted, there’s much more to him than meets the eye. Family and friends have always banked on him, and it won’t take long before Clover realises he has a beautiful soul.

    That said, I wholly understood Clover’s reasons for trying to keep Maverick at arms-length. However, in even the most heart-wrenching scenes, the author's tender touch is there, and it wouldn’t be Hunting without her humour, which often softens real-feel angsty moments.   

    Unfortunately, Maverick carries a heavy weight on his shoulders. Ooh, my poor heart! I learnt why he felt as he did only after Hunting ups the pace of this fast-moving forbidden romance. Not forgetting the positive family dynamics, a couple of heart-to-hearts throw light on a poignant memory. But what Maverick truly wants whilst trying to live up to his father’s expectations is complicated since letting his loved ones down isn’t in his book either.    

    Unfailingly observant about the goings-on around him, Maverick’s cousin made me sit up and listen to what he had to say. Yeap, I’d go to the moon and back for BJ any day! How could I not finish this review without touching on the flowing banter, character development and steaminess? Wit, snappy comebacks and not-so-subtle advice arose at just the right time. Meeting up with the gang I’d learnt to love was a delight, and last but not least—the sizzling chemistry. My oh my! Has Hunting built heat into her latest offering, or what?  

    Enthralling, impassioned and awe-inspiringly moving, BitterSweetHeart is romance at its finest. Bravo, Hunting!

    Bitter Sweet Heart by H. Hunting was exactly what I needed to get me out of this epic reading funk I’ve been in lately. This novel legit has everything I love in romance, an alpha-male, a heroine that is trying to stand on her own two feet and regain her independence, a touch of suspense, and a forbidden vibe. What’s not to love about Maverick and Clover’s story! 

    I can’t say this enough!! I loved Maverick’s character. This man is sweet and caring, but you mess with those he holds close to his heart, and you’ll see rather quickly this man will do everything in his power to protect. It’s ingrained in the very fiber of his existence. And here-in lies the alpha-male tendency. I loved how protective he was with Clover. And believe me when I say, after the schmuck she was married to, she could use a little alpha in her love life!! This man goes from teddy bear to grizzly bear in a heartbeat. My heart loved his protective nature! Even in those times when he and Clover were keeping their distance, and even when she was so back and forth with their relationship, he was always their for her when she needed him. This right here screams book boyfriend!

    And now we have Clover. I loved Clover and all she stood for. I also loved the trepidation she felt about diving into a relationship with a 21 year old man. She listened to her heart, her soul, and her brain… and believe me when I say, all three were at war within herself. I do have to say, though, the back and forth gave me a touch of emotional whiplash. I could have done without so many back and forth moments.

    I’m not going to lie, I went into this one unknowing of the contents inside the story. I didn’t read the blurb, which is something I found myself not doing lately, I just knew I wanted to tread this story. So imagine my surprise when I found out Clover is Maverick’s soon to be professor and that this novel has a twist on the age gap trope. In my reading history, I found two books I read with reverse age gap tropes, and in all honesty I wasn’t a fan of either… but this one was different from those other two. I loved the fact that Maverick and Clover met before she was his professor, and I loved the fact that they did not continue a relationship until after he was finished with her class. This woman and this man showed maturity. Sure it was hard for them to wait, but these two did the right thing in order to protect both of their bums.

    Now onto the main reasoning behind why I gave this book a 4 star rating. I loved the story, but the moments between Violet and Clover really set me off. I expected Violet to champion Maverick, because that is her son (21 years old) dating a slightly older woman (29 years old). But something about their conversation had me not liking the situation and feeling slightly wrong about said situation when in the long run, they did everything right. I was a bit annoyed with this moment. Also, i wanted more from the epic showdown. I felt like this moment was a bit too fast paced for my liking. But let’s chalk that last bit up to spoiled reader syndrome.

    Overall, I really enjoyed Bitter Sweet Heart by H. Hunting. I can’t wait to read more from this series of standalones in the near future!

    I absolutely loved BITTER SWEET HEART! I've been eager for Maverick's story ever since we got to see bits and pieces of him in LITTLE LIES! I loved his humour, and I loveeeeed his relationship with his sister, Lavender...so I was extremely excited when Helena Hunting first announced that Mav's book would be next in the series...and let me tell you, he did not disappoint!

    Maverick was just as wonderful as I hoped he'd be! I loved his humour, his heart, and it was wonderful seeing him front and center...and it was a pleasure seeing him find love! Clover was wonderful, too! I knew a tiny bit about her because of teasers that Helena posted, but it was lovely getting to know her and I loved how she and Mav complemented one another! Their chemistry was absolutely on fire, too...definitely on the very, very steamy side...and I have to admit that I loved that about it! ;) Along with their chemistry, the banter and communication between Mav and Clover was something that I really appreciated. They were so honest with their feelings and the conversations they had throughout the book made me so happy. It was phenomenal to get to see them grow together!!! I also loved seeing so many of my fave characters from the Pucked, All In, and Lies, Hearts and Truths series!!! I already can't wait for future books...particularly BJ's! ;)

    Overall, I loved BITTER SWEET HEART! It was steamy, and packed full of heart! It made me laugh, cry, swoon, and I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend both it and the first book (which takes place concurrently with this one), LITTLE LIES! If you're looking for a fantastic contemporary romance that features wonderful characters, a phenomenal and passionate romance, and a story that will keep you on your toes, then I think this is the perfect book for you!     Maverick, his whole life, thought his problems weren't as important as the problems of those he loved. Well, thank heavens we finally got to read his story... He suffered in silence for too long... He is so fiercely protective of those he loves, so loyal to those that matters... And when he met Clover, he could finally be who he was trying so hard to pretend he wasn't. Clover is brave, kind and a soft place for Maverick to fall... He so deserved to find a woman like her.

    You get some cameos from Vi and Alex, you get Lav and Kodiak, and BJ... BJ!!! God is good to us cause he's the next book! You get angst and steam and a reverse age gap like you didn't yet know you needed.

    This series has helped heal my inner broken child. And for that, I will always be grateful their stories are being told.

    The second book following the children from the Pucked/All In series', Bitter Sweet Heart tells the story of Maverick and Clover. Maverick is the middle child of Violet and her husband, hockey legend Alex Waters. When a mystery woman literally floats into his life, it's supposed to be one last fling before he concentrates on his final year at college. So, when he turns up for class, the last person he expects to find teaching his course is the mysterious woman. Clover Sweet has just come out of a controlling relationship. The last thing she needs is to get involved with someone new. And DEFINITELY not the younger, insanely hot student.

    Mav is such an old soul, a natural caregiver, and protector. Seemingly fun-loving, we quickly discover that there's an awful lot of things going on internally. Still carrying his own guilt for things that happened to his sister, Lavender, one of my favourite things about him is that it's clear that he would happily do all of the things he does for Clover for any other person. Of course, he's attracted to her, but he isn't doing any of it just to impress her. That was SO attractive. For someone who is always the caregiver, it broke my heart how little care he received in return. Part of that was because he always deflected, and often pretended he was fine. But it was very clear that still Waters run deep. The chapters where he finally opens up are filled with catharsis and extremely emotional to read.

    I really loved Clover. An age-gap professor plot could very easily have verged into creepy territory, but once again it's a testament to Helena's writing that what we actually get is a meeting of minds, hearts, and spirits with Mav and Clover. Clover is such a great listener. She asks Mav the right questions and helps him work through a lot of long-repressed trauma. It was absolutely beautiful to read. Just like her surname, she's sweet, kind, and not afraid to fight for those she cares about. Their chemistry was palpable in every scene.

    I loved returning to the Pucked/All In families: Randy, from who BJ clearly gets his astute observation skills: Gram-pot Waters and his 'special' cookies (and discovering how much River loves them); the teeny peek at Aspen (yeah, I'm praying for a nerdy STEM romance now Helena); a glimpse of Logan; and last, but absolutely not least, Alex and Violet. I loved Momma Bear Vi, and THAT conversation between Alex and Mav tore my heart open. Seriously. I sobbed. And that epilogue? *chef's kiss*
    This book was gorgeous, often complex, sometimes unexpected, but ultimately everything I could have hoped for.

    Little Lies sollte im Vorfeld gelesen werden, um die Verflechtungen zu verstehen. Besonders weil ja auch immer wieder auf Ereignisse die Lavender in ihrer Kindheit eingegangen werden. Und welche Auswirkungen traumatische Erlebnisse nicht nur auf die betroffene Person haben, sonder auch die Auswirkungen auf die ganze Familie.
    Dennoch ist Bitter Sweet Heart nicht nur von schweren Themen gezeichnet. Es geht auch um soviel anderes.
    Maverik hat einen One Night Stand mit einer schönen Unbekannten. Nur dass er sie unverhofft doch wieder trifft. An der Uni. Nur ist sie keine Studentin, sondern seine Professorin in einem seiner Kurse. Das sorgt natürlich schon für Sprengstoff. Gut sie ist "nur" 8 Jahre älter als er, aber für den Anfang ist das natürlich schon ein Hinderniss.
    Dennoch ist die Anziehungskraft zwischen Clover und ihm groß.
    Theoretisch könnte ihrem Glück nichts im Weg stehen, sobald das Semester beendet ist, bis auf die klitzekleine Tatsache, dass Clover sich noch in einem Scheidungsprozess befindet und ihr Ehemann die Papiere nicht unterschreiben will.
    Wie gewohnt schafft es die Autoren die Charaktere sehr echt zu zeichnen. Die Dynamiken zwischen den Freunden und auch mit den Eltern sind konsistent zu früheren Büchern (die Pucked-Reihe, All-In Reihe), dass man das Gefühl hat, man kenn die Charaktere und sie gehören zur Familie.
    Besonders emotional und auch dramatisch wurde es zum Ende was einem teilweise den Atem hat anhalten lassen.
