Middlesex Murders (Sutton True Crime History) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 51 ratings

Middlesex Murders brings together numerous murderous tales, some of which were little known outside the county, and others which made national headlines. Contained within the pages of this book are the stories behind some of the most heinous crimes ever committed in Middlesex. They include the murder of John Draper, whose body was found in a well at Enfield Chase in 1816; 15-year-old John Brill, found beaten to death in a wood in 1837 after giving evidence against two poachers; and Claire Paul, killed with an axe at her home in Ruislip in 1938. Linda Stratmann’s carefully researched and enthralling text includes much previously unpublished information and will appeal to everyone interested in the shady side of Middlesex’s history.

I enjoyed reading this book, ,9 of the 10 cases were new to me. A good mix of murders, manslaughter and unsolved cases with a good spread of years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great detail, confusing storytelling.

I have read many of the books in this '... Murders' series and like the others this collection provides many interesting stories from the last two centuries. This is the first book in this series which I have read however which is authored by Linda Stratmann. I have to say that despite her clearly impeccable research and accuracy of detail, I found her characterisation quite poor. Most of the ten stories in this tome contain a large collection of characters and at times a constant barrage of names, repeated in a ' He said, She said' manner becomes confusing and detracts from the central issues of the murder. Of course the people mentioned in the stories are crucial as witnesses etc:- but a barage of surnames and little other detail is disappointing.

Great detail, but confusing storytelling. If you want a book from the same series but one that is more concise and readable I would recommend Nicola Sly on murders in Herefordshire, Shropshire and other great locations.
