Meant to Be My Cowboy (Wranglers of Wyoming, 3) Mass Market Paperback – August 24, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
The cowboy she can’t have . . . is the one she can’t resist.
Annie Dempsey has two rules for her new life in Devil’s Door, Wyoming: no romance and no drama. Fresh off a bad breakup, she’s already avoiding love. And as long as she steers clear of the Merrick clan—her family’s sworn enemies—avoiding drama won’t be a problem. But when a charming stranger steps in to protect Annie from a sudden threat, both her rules fly out the door. Because Annie’s mystery hero . . . is a Merrick.
Jonah Merrick won’t allow anyone—even a Dempsey—to be harmed on his watch. It doesn’t hurt that sweet, gorgeous Annie makes his heart beat like never before. Against his family’s objections, Jonah insists Annie hide out with him at his ranch while they try to outwit a dangerous pursuer. But as the days turn into weeks, Jonah realizes he’ll stop anyone who tries to harm Annie . . . or the loving future they’re building together.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat book! I had not read a book by R.C. Ryan in years and I had forgotten how talented this author is. Wow I loved this book and I highly recommend it!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2021Format: KindleI’ve loved the Merricks since the very first story in this series. A cowboy family with deep roots to their home and in the land that provided for them. Each character had their own story and going into this last instalment there were a number of unanswered questions… Liz, Bo, Jonah – the Dempsey family – I needed to know!!! And now I (delightfully) do…
The Dempsey/Merrick feud had been fueled years ago and never faltered. Each felt the other had betrayed them, and some missteps turned deadly. How could they reconcile? Could they? Annie and Jonah’s romance felt like it was going to happen under the shade of a McCoy/Hatfield theme yet the Merrick family once again stepped up. They put their own feelings aside and supported Jonah, wherever that took him. No wonder they found a place in my heart long ago!
Jonah was so many things – cowboy, son, brother - with a second career all his own. His family had always been there for him and he was grateful they looked at Annie through his eyes… Annie was hiding but she was still strong, even if she was also grateful for the unwavering support of the Merricks. Especially Jonah. Even when things turned from bad to worse…
This last of the series warmed my heart through and through – I can’t wait for more stories from this author!
*I happily reviewed this story

- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2021Format: KindleMeant to Be My Cowboy is the third novel in R.C. Ryan's Wranglers of Wyoming series, a series I've been following from the outset, and it's a series which has been consistently well-written, sexy, suspenseful and entertaining, and once again I find myself giving this third book in the series a 4-star rating.
Jonah is the youngest Merrick brother, and, in addition to working on the huge Merrick family ranch, he's also a bestselling and elusive mystery writer, preferring ranch work and his privacy to going on book tours, radio or television to promote his books, and his anonymity keeps him in a constant battle with his literary agent.
The Merrick family has been feuding with the nearby Dempsey family for decades, and so when Jonah spots Annie (no last name yet) at the local watering hole one Friday night, he's drawn to her beauty immediately, but he merely looks on as every single cowboy in the place swarms her. The next day, after his ranching chores, he heads for his writing retreat, a cabin in the woods he built himself, when along comes Annie, on foot, who assumes she's hiking on public rather than private land. She's recently relocated to town, and Jonah decides to hike alongside her, and the two become fast friends and hiking buddies.
Unbeknownst to Jonah, Annie is in hiding, and it takes Jonah arriving at her rented apartment over the hair salon in town to discover that she's in danger--and for her own safety, he convinces her to move to his large and heavily populated family ranch, where they soon learn that she's the niece of Des Dempsey, who owns the town bank, and who, along with Jonah's father, have been avoiding each other for years. Annie, like the rest of her family, also went into banking, and when she discovered that the man she'd been seeing had stolen a million dollars from one of her clients and deposited it in a separate bank account under Annie's name, making her the fall gal for his crime, she can't leave San Francisco fast enough. It's an excellent set-up for a novel of romantic suspense.
While the Merrick's use their connections to help clear Annie's name and reputation, she and Jonah move from being mere hiking and horse-riding buddies to something a lot more serious, and yes, there is some steam in this novel, but it's not over the top at all.
My only issue with this novel, and the reason for its 4-star rather than a 5-star rating is the pacing, and needless repetition about the reasons for the family feud. This novel is very slow to get moving, and if you've not read the two previous novels in this series, the sheer amount of characters living and working on the Merrick ranch will probably confuse you. Additionally, the multitude of hikes in the hills and the constant discussions about the beauty of the wild mustangs they repeatedly spot, as well as the Merrick's repeatedly having dessert and coffee on their porch to enjoy the sunsets over the Grand Tetons, all just seemed like a lot of unnecessary padding for a page count to this reader.
As Jonah, his family, and their friends in law enforcement try to clear Annie of any wrongdoing, the tension and suspense finally speed up into a dangerous and suspenseful climax , and yes, as expected, there's an HEA ending to this novel, and despite what felt like a slow start and unnecessary padding, this novel was still both an enjoyable and suspenseful read.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021Format: KindleY'all the Merrick family is back and you know if you have been reading this series what that means, HAM is back. This book really didn't disappoint. I was so happy to get a chance to read it. I realized this book was going to be the last book in the series and I was a little disappointed because if you have been following along Aunt Liz has quickly become one of my favorite characters and I wasn't sure if we would see much of her in this book. However the author throws a twist in this story and it involves Liz. I liked Annie she was a fighter and ready to take to bat anyone who bad mouthed her or her family. I Liked Jonah but I did feel he just really showed his heart through out and did not keep it close to his vest, you knew where you stood with him thats for sure. The author throws some twist and turns in the book and keeps you guessing what's going to happen next. There is some adult situations in this book which might not be suitable for all readers. Overall I am sad to see this family go but this book was so worth the read. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Annie Dempsey has moved to Devil's Door. Her uncle has hired her at the bank and she's living above the beauty salon.
Jonah Merrick is out with his brothers at Nonie's and sees her come in to get and order. He is instantly smitten.
There is a long running feud with Annie's Uncle and the Merrick family. When Jonah and Annie meet again they don't exchange last names. The spends a few hikes and trail rides and Annie discovers Jonah's book on the shelf in his cabin. We she asked is he is a Merrick and she tells him she is a Dempsey she leaves and doesn't want to see him again.
Jonah decides to go to see her and there is a man inside her apartment threating her. Seems she was hiding out in Devil's Door. She tells Jonah about her problems and he takes back to the ranch to hide out until she can talk to the sheriff. As they spend more time together they realize they are very interested in a relationship together.
The sheriff informs Annie she is considered a suspect and not to leave town. So, we have some suspense and of course romance ensues.
