Metal Heart (Metal & Magic) Kindle Edition
When stray human Matthew wanders into Black Dog shifter pack territory, he’s injured and vulnerable. The last thing Matthew expects is for the pack’s alpha to be the home he’s always been looking for.
Bram can’t believe his nose when the trespasser his enforcers drop at his feet turns out to be something entirely different. Nursing Matthew back to health becomes Bram’s priority, but the pack isn’t thrilled to have a human in their midst.
When the pack gives them an ultimatum—either Matthew joins the pack in truth or leaves—the only question is, if he decides not to stay, will Bram be able to let him go?
Metal Heart is the first novel in the Metal and Magic series, a dystopian urban fantasy romance filled with magic, adventure, and the perils of being human in a supernatural world. In each book, the couple gets their HEA while contributing to the ongoing story of the series.- LanguageEnglish

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2022Awesome start to a new paranormal series! Terrific world building, great characters and a story-line that gripped me and never let me go. There were so many delightful nuances about shifters, mages, and the catastrophic war that had occurred that I totally had my imagination captured and loved this book.
Matthew and Bram had some good character development and you could feel their connection. I want to see more of them and how they grow in the future.
This is book one of the Metal & Magic series and the next books are going to be awesome!
I was gifted this book from Gay Romance Reviews and i freely give my honest opinion and review
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2022I enjoyed this book. I have another book written by this author and I am looking forward to reading it. Mathew is a human that is lost and wanders into Black Dog territory, a shifter community. In this futuristic world, humans are not to be trusted very much. Some of the shifters want to kill him outright. But something about Mathew catches the of the alpha, Bram. Bram takes Mathew in and sees to his care and they two develop feelings for each other. Brahms’s pack insists on the mating ritual to prove Mathew’s loyalty. But danger and treachery stalk Mathew.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2023The Metal & Magic book series was ok for the most part.
Although I could not read the Prequel titled Revenant, because it was never published in paperback, so I didn’t learn about the foundation of the story before reading the main books.
The rest of the books, Metal Heart, Shifting Shadows and Metal Soul, followed the same kind of synopsis, where there are shifters and other paranormal creatures, and the main characters find their lifelong mate, and then they have adventures. Kind of similar to all of Catherine Lievens stories, only maybe slightly better.
The stories were somewhat interesting, and attention captivating, during the action and adventure parts, however, the graphic play by play sex scene descriptions were repetitious, unneeded and mind numbing, and had to be skipped over in order to enjoy and get back to the story.
Book 1, Metal Heart, was an ok read, and got me immersed in the story, its characters, and the world in which they lived. Unfortunately, the story’s ending was left somewhat open, without an actual ending and was then continued in the next book. This was a bit upsetting.
Book 2, Shifting Shadows, was a lot better and was enjoyed even more. I actually looked forward to reading book three and immersing myself more into this world. Unfortunately, once again, the story’s ending was left somewhat open, without an actual ending and was then continued in the next book. This again, was a bit upsetting.
However, Book 3, Metal Soul soon descended into a three-way thruple kind of relationship that I can’t even begin to relate to, as well as holes and a bit of unbelievability in the story, even though it’s completely paranormal fantasy.
I can’t understand why so many authors keep writing books about 3 way relationships. As far as I know, the amount of those kinds of relationships in the gay community has got to be like 1 or 2 percent at most.
Most relationship oriented people, in general, want a monogamous loving relationship. As soon as the author went on and on about the characters and their 3 way relationship, I wanted to stop reading and put the book down. But, I wanted to see what the end of the story was like so I finished the book, skipping over the over the top play by play sex scene descriptions and mushy lovey dovey stuff that made me want to gag.
I read books with gay characters in them because sometimes it’s difficult to relate to so much heterosexual love stories. Call me narrow minded, but, because of this author writing about a 3 way relationship I could not relate to, she ruined to book series for me, and I’ll likely not read anything from Michelle Frost again.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2022Oh my goodness! I absolutely loved this book, I read it when it was just a free short story & I was thrilled to find out it was a novella now!
I loved Bram & Matty then and I love them just as much now! Bram and his pack are some amazing people & I love how they treat each other like family! I felt the betrayal like I was there with them!
I loved the prequel too, oh my goodness Kova & Erick we’re super sweet and I can’t wait to see what’s next! 😀❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2022As the first book in a new series, this was good though I felt like this dystopian world would have made more sense if I had been able to read the prequel novella first. I appreciated that while action packed, the story progressed without a great deal of angst. Of course, that also kept me from being fully invested in the events that unfolded. I liked Bram and Matthew and was happy with Matthew finding his inner strength, so he could feel like Bram’s pack really could become home. I’m still going to dig up a copy of Revenant to find what I missed prior to this, then be looking for the next book in April because this was an entertaining read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2022An amazing new book and i can't wait for the rest. I personally think it breathes new life into shifter stories. Here, they are mates by fate, BUT they can choose if they actually want to mate or not. Its not a set in stone or be alone forever type rule, and i honestly enjoy that newness it brings to the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022Great paranormal post apocalyptic story! I want to know more about how this world came to be. I know there is a prequel, which I recommend reading as it did explain a few other details. I’m looking forward to more of this world.
Bram and Matthew worked well though I would have liked to see more of them getting to know each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2022So, while I've read other books by this author and really enjoyed them, I was a little underwhelmed by this one. My biggest complaint is that it feels like it should be book #2 or #3 of a series and not #1. Lots of references made no sense to me and I felt like I was coming into a story halfway. Names of characters were brought up, as if the reader should know who they were, and I found that to distracting and annoying. The blurb doesn't mention that this is a spin-off of other books, but that's how it reads. The MC's fell a bit flat, as well. I wasn't really invested in them at all, although I did finish the book just to find out how it was going to end. I might pick up the second book to see if it clears up any of the many lingering questions and, hopefully, it will be an improvement. Just not my favorite of her works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic start to the series!
I originally read the short for this some years ago and I am so excited that it’s been expanded into a full length book. Bram and Matthew stoke my heart back then and it only got better! The world building in this is really good; you learn organically which means it never feels like an info dump and there’s more to learn as the series progresses. Bram was such a cinnamon roll on the inside. He’s a big tough alpha but a total sweetheart and he looks after Matthew so well. I love that Matthew was able to find a place where he could be and feel safe and loved. These two deserved all the happiness and I loved getting to see them find it in more detail. I can’t wait for more!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start into a new series.
Metal Heart is #1 in the Metal & Magic series. It`s a dystopian urban fantasy M/M Romance filled with magic, adventure and the perils of being human in a supernatural word. The story can be read as a standalone, with the main plot being continued in the following books.
The characters were well developed for a novel. I liked that Bram, as an alpha, wasn't your standard six-pack man. It's nice that even an alpha can be 'normal' muscular with a "bear-belly".
There is an age difference of 30 years between Bram and Matty, but it is treated here without any conflict. Matty's quick acceptance of the circumstances was also pleasant, so that the usual drama simply disappears completely here.
The story itself focuses primarily on the couple and the main plot; which benefits this novella. If you want something more erotic, you will be disappointed here. Slow burn or "slow patient bear sex" is the order of the day here; which fits here very well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favourite by this author
So apparently there is a free prequel to this series, that you don't find out about until the end of the book (and it isn't on amazon) - "Revenant". This prequel needs to be read first so events in this book make sense. That was quite frustrating to find out, as I was wondering what I had missed, whether this was a spin off series, because it assumed the reader had knowledge this book doesn't provide.
That also affected the worldbuilding. Much was left underdeveloped, or again, assumed so didn't fill in the blanks. Very frustrating.
I also found the chapters were short, and I was left wanting more details, depth and development. Bram and Matty's relationship was sweet, but was lost amid all the other happenings in the book. I didn't feel any connection with them, nor see any chemistry between them either. Much like the rest of the story, we got a few details and actions here and you're, but not enough depth and development to really draw a reader in.
I usually love this author, and was excited for a new series, but this didn't meet my expectations and is definitely not one of my favourites. Unfortunately not one I'd recommend if you want a good sample of this author's works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh start
This is a rewrite and expansion of an original short story which has made it into an excellent novel! There is a short story before this that explains about the world within and the paranormals within it. Now the story follows the mysterious arrival of a modified human Matt and his connection to the alpha Bram.
Matt has been modified to have a metal arm though he doesn't know why it who the people are that did it to him. When Matt stumbles into the territory of the Black Dog pack he finds himself with Bram, who realizes Matt is his mate. In an effort to protect his mate Bram tries to figure out what happened to him and who could be after him.
This expanded story does so much more justice to these characters and the world. There is a good explanation of Matt's arm as well as a discovery of further changes and the purpose they all have. There is a connection to Bram's past as well as more mysteries to figure out in the future. There are a variety of ways this could go and things to discover in this world which promises much for this upcoming series!

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting
A very interesting concept for a story and it works . Can’t say too much without giving away spoilers. This is a great story and it is a great start to a new series. Highly recommended
