Slapshot: A Moo U Hockey Romance Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,347 ratings

I’m banished to Vermont for a scandal that wasn’t my fault, and broke because my famous father cut me off. And did I mention my roommate stole my boyfriend? Yeah, I’m loving my Moo U experience.

Now I need a job, because this gel manicure won’t upkeep itself. The only available option is the last one I’d ever want--a job as the hockey team’s equipment manager. My plan is to do the bare minimum, get paid, and find my way back into my father’s good graces.

I will not get involved with a hockey player, no matter how hot. They’re cocky. And obnoxious. I know their type, and I’m not willing to risk getting hurt again. Until Lex Vonne glides into my life looking like sin on a stick.

He thinks I’m a spoiled brat.

I think he’s using me to get ahead.

But the fire I feel when we’re together is like a slapshot to my heart…

Hockey Romance Goodness
“Slapshot” is part of the Moo U Hockey Romance series and was my first book by Rebecca Jenshack, and is a quick and easy workplace/sports romance. Kaitlyn is not your typical university student. She lives in the dorms, likes to party and is broke, but that’s where normal ends. Kaitlyn’s father is hockey royalty and a Moo U graduate, which only makes her hate the sport and the school more. Desperate for a job, she signs on as the hockey team’s equipment manager and kills it and despite her protests to the contrary, enjoys it as well. Lex is a hockey player. He’s hot and sexy and working hard to earn his place on the team. Distractions in the form of a sexy, in your face, equipment manager are not welcome. Or are they?! Watching Kaitlyn and Lex, fall hard for each other while protesting the entire way, made this a thoroughly enjoyable read. “Slapshot” gets the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!

    Slapshot by Rebecca Jenshak is the second book in the Moo U series, written by multiple authors and inspired by Sarina Bowen’s True North series. It is a standalone though, so you don’t have to read any other books to fully enjoy this story.

    I loved everything about Slapshot. It’s college hockey at its best. It’s beautifully written, the story flows naturally, and the characters are endearing. It’s funny, sweet, and steamy. It is low angst, but it has so much emotional depth. Rebecca Jenshak is a very talented writer, and she did an amazing job with Kaitlyn’s story. There are two sides to every story after all, right?

    First of all, Lex Vonne is dreamy. He’s a freshman and the team’s rookie. He’s driven and focused, a serious hockey player determined to prove himself. He’s hot and charming, and he has a great sense of humor. Like I said, he’s dreamy. Definitely book boyfriend material.

    And then there’s Kaitlyn Dalager. She’s been exiled to Vermont by her father after being kicked out of her fancy New York school. She’s a junior living in the dorms. A dorm she shares with her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend. And now she needs to find a job because her father cut her off. She’s definitely not enjoying her new life so far.

    There’s so much more to Kaitlyn than meets the eye. She’s smart and snarky. She’s has trust issues and a gigantic chip on her shoulder. She’s deeply unhappy, until Lex skates into her life. His easy charm and sweetness manage to crack her armor. I loved how their relationship starts. The banter, the pranks, the playfulness of it. They’re so fun together. But there’s an emotional turmoil inside her that she’ll need to deal with or risk losing her best chance at happiness.

    Slapshot is a great addition to the Moo U series and the World of True North. You get a glimpse of Vino and Veritas, the inclusive bookstore slash wine bar in Burlington, and get a bit more acquainted with the other hockey players on the team. I seriously cannot wait for more!

    This is the third book I read in the MooU universe, and it’s just as much fun as the others.
    Lex is so much fun to read! He reminded me of a bouncy rubber ball, or an adorable puppy chasing the rubber ball, because no matter how much Kaitlyn rebuffs him, he just bounces back, cuter than ever! I like how he doesn’t have hang ups, and even though he’s persistent in getting to know her there is zero negative vibes from him. Kaitlyn was not my fav character in the beginning because she comes across as kind of a cliche, but pretty soon, I found myself interested, and especially through her interactions with Lex and the team at large, I thought her character really came to life. The story flows well and I found it a quick and easy read.
    I’m really enjoying this series so far. One thing I liked was that you don’t necessarily need to read the other books to get what’s happening because these are all standalone. At the same time, it’s nice if have read the other books because it’s fun to spot characters from the other books! Another thing I really like in all these books I’ve read is the way the authors have written sportsmen without making all them into cliched "dude bros", if that makes sense. There’s no toxic masculinity, they’re just college guys who are driven and ambitious. This really works well and brings out a really positive equation between the main characters. They’re still struggling with their own issues, but I feel this kind of framing for a romance is very important.

    Kaitlyn and Lex are up and, well, things don't start smoothly for these two. Mostly because Kaitlyn is NOT thrilled that the only job she can nab quickly is as equipment manager for the men's hockey team. Which means she has to be around hockey dudes. Yeah, she's not thrilled with any of that.

    Why? Well, because Lex is on the team and he's most definitely a dude. And she doesn't want to like him, but she sort of does. Kind of. Maybe.

    On Lex's end, he likes Kaitlyn's no nonsense approach to everything and how she slowly lowers her walls for him. That said, their relationship isn't an easy road and Kaitlyn is quick to slam those walls back into place when things go south.

    Hockey equipment, road trips, a lady trying very hard to pretend she doesn't love hockey and all things related to it, steamy kisses, and a group of players who know a good equipment manager when they see her. *thumbs up*

    Written in dual first person POV. Decent amount of sexy times but they weren’t all very well written. The plot was the typical “daughter of hockey god can’t trust anyone but falls for hockey player anyway”. Honestly, my biggest problem was Kait. Lex is a big sweetheart but Kait is a “mean girl” who acts like an entitled spoiled brat at the beginning. While her attitude does improve, there isn’t some big character arc for her - she still self-sabotages and then whines about it. We barely get a HFN and the epilogue that can be sent to you via email is quick and doesn’t contribute anything to the story.

    Can be read as a standalone (Tate and Maggie from book 1 appear but we’re not given any more spoiler-y stuff about them). Apparently Kait was a character in Heartland (True North) but I didn’t read that book. Considering Kait’s roommate and Kait’s ex were the main characters of that book (and I didn’t particularly like them in this book), I’m not sure if I’ll go back and read it.

    Overall I’m just disappointed. I’ll continue with the series but I hope that it gets better.

    Spanish & English Opinion ::

    SPA ::

    Me encantan las historias de romance deportivo. En este caso, el galán es encantador. Es más joven que ella pero es divino. Ella es un poco dramática pero es linda también.

    El equipo de hockey está padrísimo y todos me caen excelente, menos Kirk...

    La lectura es rápida, interesante y con súper personajes.

    ENG ::

    Sport romances are great. I liked this one because the guy is amazing. He’s younger than her but a really nice guy.
    She’s a bit of drama but has a nice heart.

    The hockey team is the best and guys are cool. Except for Kirk...

    Nice reading, interesting hockey dialogue and really cool characters.

    When Kaitlin Dalanger has her finds cut, she ends up getting a job as the hockey team equipment manager. As the daughter of a famous hockey player, she tries to avoid anything to do with the game. Not only does her job link her to the game it also brings her closer to Lex Vonne, a player new to the team! Can she get over her mistrust of players to find that someone likes her just for who she is and not for her dad? Can Lex convince her that she's who he sees? This was a surprising read from a new author for me. It pulled me in and kept me hooked from start to finish. The characters have chemistry and the story line was entertaining. Can't wait to read another book by Rebecca
