Darkroom: A Moo U Hockey Romance Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 548 ratings

A wonderful addition to the world of Moo U hockey. USA Today bestselling author Melanie Ting

As a top draft pick from a family of hockey royalty, I'm under so much pressure that I'm losing my edge on the ice. I need something to snap my brain out of this self-destructive stress-loop. That's where Indi Briscoe from my photography class comes in. She's flirtatious and funny one moment, sweetly shy the next.

But she's cagey. She has secrets. Also? She's a virgin. Did I mention the pressure thing? Maybe I'm crazy for starting something with her. But we can't seem to help ourselves...

Warning: this standalone novel contains heat, heart, familial expectations, extreme milkshakes, and a hamster with deep thoughts.

I have no words to express how much I loved this book. It’s definitely one of my favorite books so far this year. It’s beautifully written, and the pace of the story is perfect. It’s also very original. There are a lot of things happening in this book, but I truly believe that the author did a great job blending them together and making them an integral and important part of the story. It’s the kind of story you want to never end because it’s so good.

I will just say that if you love nice hunky guys, Hudson is the one you want to meet. He’s such a great guy! He’s smart, funny, romantic, and he’s a hockey player! He’s not perfect, thank goodness, but he’s definitely book boyfriend material. We need more Hudsons in the world. And Indis. I won’t go into detail, but you will definitely fall in love with her as well. And they will definitely set the darkroom on fire with their incendiary chemistry. The connection between them is well established, and I loved them together.

Darkroom is such a beautiful story, and we’re in a time when we need them the most. Stories that entertain but that also touch your heart and soul. Stories that make you think as much as feel. Darkroom is what romance is all about, it’s what every story should aspire to be. There is so much more to Darkroom than a college hockey romance, and yet it’s brilliant at it as well.

If you’re like me and love audiobooks, I recommend you give this book a listen. I listened to it as well, and let me just say that Joe Arden and Victoria Mei did a phenomenal job. It’s such a great listen.

I was sold on this book within minutes of starting to read. Basically I was rooting for Indi practically from the moment she was described, and then her description of pizza toppings basically sealed the deal. Also, the fact that it’s not just the good stuff but also her limitations and hang ups that come out through her interactions, all make her very relatable and endearing. Similarly with Hudson, he is so likeable, and it’s evident through his interactions with others, be it Indi, his friends, team, or even his dad. Yet there’s the way he’s struggling with the pressure. Seriously, there was a point where I just wanted to hug both him and Indi. Normally I want to bang the characters' heads for being foolish, so this was a nice change!
As an aside, Deke the hamster as well as AJ and Ruby really made for enjoyable side characters. I absolutely loved Ruby and Indi's relationship! And I found the photography class, with its various assignments, very engaging to read about. I’d enjoy attending it too! I wouldn’t have minded more about that, actually. The only other thing I wish is that the epilogue (that comes in the author's newsletter) had been part of this book, because I was not ready for their story to be over yet!

I’ve really loved the Moo U series, but this one was just ok. Indi’s emotionally immature responses to Hudson’s basic comments about her PWS just put her in the reject pile for me. No, I don’t know what she’s gone through, however she acts as if she’s the only person whose ever been ostracized in society. We all have experienced that in some fashion. Hudson is a really great BBF, who, frankly, could do better than her! I was also a bit surprised by the ending - it was quite abrupt.

    Indi and Hudson
She’s slowly learning to accept and love herself for who she is. He’s dealing with the pressure of a legacy that falls on his shoulders. When the stress gets to be to much, will they pull together or fall apart?

Umm... where can I find a Hudson? Because I seriously need a guy like him in my life! He is so darn sweet, supportive, and protective! He is exactly what Indie needed to help overcome her own insecurities. As much as she needed him, he needed her too! Even with his outburst, which while it was messed up- I could see how everything just finally got to be to much. I love that he was able to reach out for help and didn’t let all his fears get the best of him. I also love how she finally accepted who she was. I totally love this couple! They are so great together!
There also needs to be an honorary mention for Deke and his insightful thoughts 🤣

This is a great book that addresses so many important topics that you would normally never see in a college romance! I highly recommend giving it a try!

PS- we totally had AJ’s grilled cheese for dinner tonight- it was amazing!!!

I couldn’t love this book anymore if I tried the emotional journey these two took was inspiring . Sweet and Romantic. Indi and Hudson. I really loved the story between these two if only life really were this easy but obviously that’s why we read stories with HEA endings. I loved their struggles, flaws and family dynamics. This is 8 in the moo u series have loved them all. Can’t wait for the next one!

The book has all the hallmarks of a great book - great writing, humor, well fleshed out and likable/3 dimensional characters, but what really sets it apart is what you learn from this book. It discusses so many unusual topics that I have rarely seen discussed transracial adoption, cultural adaptation, medical issues, etc...all with written with such finesse.

I have read all of Kate’s books and this is her best one to date and best of a very good series.

Three stars because it was kind of boring. It was hard for me to connect with the characters and I felt like there were too many problems and drama. Hudson had problems with his family and two personal and Indi almost the same quantity. For a book so short it is too much drama, bordering exhausting. The emotional load of this story is big. And I also hated the way Hudson offended her but she also didn't have tenderness when talking about his problem. His apology was anywhere close to what she deserved though.
I gave 3 stars because ot was well written after all but I didn't enjoy the story as much as others from Moo U.

Indie, the heroin, has a birthmark on her face. Hudson is the captain of the hockey team. Their story is really good and I enjoyed it.

The wait was far too long before the MCs got together. This book just didn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the Moo U hockey series. After reading the first 7, this was by far my least favourite.

Hudson is hockey playing royalty and is totally floored when he speaks to Indi , who is an adopted from China. She believes that he made a racist remark to her and she blows up at him. He soon apologies and she realises her mistake. They then become photography partners and very quickly a real couple. These two definitely go through lots of trials and tribulations in this book, which they both work very hard to overcome. This story is very thought provoking as well as beautifully heart warming. This couple are two who totally get each other.
