More Than He Seems: Reinventing Pride and Prejudice's George Wickham (A Pride and Prejudice Variation) Kindle Edition
Faced with the choice of keeping his good name or serving King and Country, George Wickham puts aside love, acceptance and family in service of the Crown. Never does he dream he will prove so adept at deceit that one act of service will turn into years of falsehood. Or that the lie he perpetuates for the good of all will drive a wedge between him and everyone he values.
More Than He Seems runs parallel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with a portrayal of George Wickham as you never dreamed to see him. Join him through trials of fidelity and love, and through danger and redemption. Discover if this famous villain can truly be more than he seems.

About the authors
Summer Hanford writes gripping Epic Fantasy, swashbuckling Historical Romance, and best-selling Pride and Prejudice retellings. She lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York with her husband and compulsory, deliberately spoiled, cat. The newest addition to their household, an energetic setter-shepherd mix, has been trying, and failing, for six years to gain acceptance from the cat, but is adored by the humans.
Since the moment she read her first novel, Summer’s passion has always been writing. As a child growing up on a dairy farm, she built castles made of hay and wielded swords made of fence posts. She is also passionate about animals, travel, and organizing her closet. Nothing pleases her more than a row of tops broken down by sleeve length and ordered by color…except working on her latest novel with her cat in her lap, her dog lounging on the rug dreaming of squirrels, and a cup of tea at hand.
Renata McMann is the pen name of someone who likes to rewrite public domain works. She is fond of thinking "What if?"

- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2024Having quite the loathing for Mr. Wickham, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this book. But I started it and was hooked. This book is delightful in the ways it weaves all the deeds Wickham was accused of into a very plausible story of a spy. These two authors are excellent writers and I now think I have found my favorite book of theirs. Thank you for a great read and an enjoyable time!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2024This explores a well worked variation where George Wickham is a spy for the British military and every aspect of his behavior in the original is explained by missions he was on to uncover treason. It is fun and fast paced and frankly very enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2022Just like the title of this book, this variation of Pride and Prejudice is more than you would expect. It is told from George Wickham's POV, and it has a very uniquely entertaining scenario in this "what if " look. What if George Wickham had been recruited to work for the government, as a spy, while he was still at university? This is such an amazing look at how he felt about his behavior and the necessity for the secrecy around it. Colonel Fitzwilliam is his contact and the only person who knows that he works for King and Country. Lydia Bennet is also shown in a different light here, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024Wow, what an adventure! This was so different and I admit it took me a bit to see Wickham has “good”. I absolutely admire how the authors melded the events of P&P. They are amazing! Readers shouldn’t have an expectation of ODC being front and center or the entire cast of characters taking a part in the unfolding story. This was a true masterpiece from my favorite authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2024I was initially hesitant because I'm always looking for Elizabeth and Darcy, but I'm SO GLAD I gave this a chance - so well written and constructed, an intriguing story and a fantastic take. I loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2023I have read MANY different POV and retellings of pride & prejudice but this is by far one of my favorites. I have never left a review before for a book, but I loved it so much I wanted to make sure others read it as well!
Seriously, I love this “behind the scenes” tale of Wickham and how beautifully the author tied it all together. I was not expecting Lydia’s perspective as well, and was thoroughly pleased. If there was anything I would have changed, maybe a play on with Lady Catherine and Anne but honestly, I didn’t miss them and that’s just an afterthought.
Truly great job on this book! Definitely worth the read! ❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2023I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and the research that went into this fascinating variation. Personally, I would not have thought that George Wickham could have ever been redeemed, and I was wrong. I loved the way that McMann and Hanford crafted this complicated work that I would have read in one sitting but for the length. Took two sittings instead. I highly recommend it if you like romance, mystery, and suspense, this has got it all. ENJOY!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2023Reading this was great fun as it followed the events of the original pride and prejudice novel from the interesting angel of George Wickham as a hero. Very skillfully, a totally new story was woven through so that it matched up perfectly with canon with reasonable alternate explanations for the behavior of Wickham and Lydia. This continues until the last chapter when ALL IS REVEALED! It was very detailed which I have no patience for so the 4 stars is because I had to flip past much of the detail that I just didn’t care about. Recommended for all P&P fans who are tired of the same retreads in the alternative universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favourite
I have read many PnP variations of all sorts but this is my new favourite. While the plot slots in, in parallel with PnP, nothing is repeated from the original. It is very cleverly crafted. I have given it five stars, despite the American spellings - that's how much I like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sooooo gut

5.0 out of 5 stars If ever a book deserved a 5 star rating, this is it
This is probably one of the most Imaginative variations on P and P I have read. It's easy to become bored with a story everyone knows so well but this book takes a totally different approach that is fresh and engrossing. Well written. The familiar characters are (mostly) all there but with insights that the reader might never have thought of. I read it in one sitting and was sorry to see it end. Without giving the story away it would be fun to hear more of George and India's adventures. A keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Loved it. The story itself, different from an I've read before; the pace, the way the characters were portrayed, the whole setting. This team does a wonderful job. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Wickham backstory I have ever read.
Very enjoyable . Plausible story line and all the original characters true to P&P versions of them. Had to read it all in one day, couldn"t put it down!!!
