More Than He Seems: Reinventing Pride and Prejudice's George Wickham (A Pride and Prejudice Variation) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 250 ratings

Could George Wickham, Jane Austen’s most notorious villain, be a hero?

Faced with the choice of keeping his good name or serving King and Country, George Wickham puts aside love, acceptance and family in service of the Crown. Never does he dream he will prove so adept at deceit that one act of service will turn into years of falsehood. Or that the lie he perpetuates for the good of all will drive a wedge between him and everyone he values.

More Than He Seems runs parallel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with a portrayal of George Wickham as you never dreamed to see him. Join him through trials of fidelity and love, and through danger and redemption. Discover if this famous villain can truly be more than he seems.

Absolutely one of the best p &p variations I've read. This was so well written and the characters masterfully moved in different directions including a wonderful Wickham. Well, well done.

I have read MANY different POV and retellings of pride & prejudice but this is by far one of my favorites. I have never left a review before for a book, but I loved it so much I wanted to make sure others read it as well!

Seriously, I love this “behind the scenes” tale of Wickham and how beautifully the author tied it all together. I was not expecting Lydia’s perspective as well, and was thoroughly pleased. If there was anything I would have changed, maybe a play on with Lady Catherine and Anne but honestly, I didn’t miss them and that’s just an afterthought.

Truly great job on this book! Definitely worth the read! ❤️

Reading this was great fun as it followed the events of the original pride and prejudice novel from the interesting angel of George Wickham as a hero. Very skillfully, a totally new story was woven through so that it matched up perfectly with canon with reasonable alternate explanations for the behavior of Wickham and Lydia. This continues until the last chapter when ALL IS REVEALED! It was very detailed which I have no patience for so the 4 stars is because I had to flip past much of the detail that I just didn’t care about. Recommended for all P&P fans who are tired of the same retreads in the alternative universe.

This explores a well worked variation where George Wickham is a spy for the British military and every aspect of his behavior in the original is explained by missions he was on to uncover treason. It is fun and fast paced and frankly very enjoyable.

Wow, what an adventure! This was so different and I admit it took me a bit to see Wickham has “good”. I absolutely admire how the authors melded the events of P&P. They are amazing! Readers shouldn’t have an expectation of ODC being front and center or the entire cast of characters taking a part in the unfolding story. This was a true masterpiece from my favorite authors.

George Wickham’s career in the army begins when he is still at Cambridge. His career in the army leads directly to his estrangement from his childhood friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy. Their common friend, Richard Fitzwilliam, cannot repair their friendship for a very good reason: Darcy is a very poor liar.

Ergo: Darcy can never know the truth.

Wickham and Darcy both suffer lifetime wounds from their broken friendship.

The greatest enemy of any one of our truths may be the rest of our truths. ~ William James

Eventually, Wickham does meet someone who easily sees through his false persona.

I loved this unusual look at George Wickham. The authors did an outstanding job setting up their premise and explaining all the facts from canon that led up to Darcy’s dislike. They still managed to paint Wickham as an honorable character. I believed — I really believed!

Having quite the loathing for Mr. Wickham, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this book. But I started it and was hooked. This book is delightful in the ways it weaves all the deeds Wickham was accused of into a very plausible story of a spy. These two authors are excellent writers and I now think I have found my favorite book of theirs. Thank you for a great read and an enjoyable time!

Just like the title of this book, this variation of Pride and Prejudice is more than you would expect. It is told from George Wickham's POV, and it has a very uniquely entertaining scenario in this "what if " look. What if George Wickham had been recruited to work for the government, as a spy, while he was still at university? This is such an amazing look at how he felt about his behavior and the necessity for the secrecy around it. Colonel Fitzwilliam is his contact and the only person who knows that he works for King and Country. Lydia Bennet is also shown in a different light here, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I have read many PnP variations of all sorts but this is my new favourite. While the plot slots in, in parallel with PnP, nothing is repeated from the original. It is very cleverly crafted. I have given it five stars, despite the American spellings - that's how much I like it!

This is probably one of the most Imaginative variations on P and P I have read. It's easy to become bored with a story everyone knows so well but this book takes a totally different approach that is fresh and engrossing. Well written. The familiar characters are (mostly) all there but with insights that the reader might never have thought of. I read it in one sitting and was sorry to see it end. Without giving the story away it would be fun to hear more of George and India's adventures. A keeper!
