About the author

Bru Baker writes sophisticated gay romantic fiction with strong characters, real-world problems, and plenty of humor.
Bru spent fifteen years writing for newspapers before making the jump to fiction. She now balances her time between writing and working at a Midwestern library in the reference department. Whether it’s creating her own characters or getting caught up in someone else’s, there’s no denying that Bru is happiest when she’s engrossed in a story. She and her husband have two children, which means a lot of her books get written from the sidelines of various sports practices.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2016It will be hard to review this fully without giving away the reason for Connor’s behavior and I don’t want to do that. Mainly because I didn’t buy it.
Okay, let’s start out with the fact that it begins as a fear on Jake’s part that his relationship with Connor is falling apart. Connor is never around anymore, they don’t go out, Connor doesn’t seem to want to be with him. Even karaoke, which was “…his and Connor’s special thing” doesn’t get Connor’s interest until a friend of theirs, Blaire, asks. I was upset for Jake that when Jake asked Connor to go, he wasn’t free. When Blaire asked, magically the schedule clears. For a month Jake has been asking Connor to make time for him and he hadn’t. Blaire asks and BAM, open schedule.
The evidence piles up. Connor blows off family brunches, outings, even spending time with Jake. When he comes home late and for once Jake is still awake, he apologizes for waking him but “…inched away when Jake moved in to kiss him.” Then avoids him in their own bed. Jakes spends a lot of time reminiscing about how their relationship used to be and things they used to do. “Jake knew what unexplained absences and secretiveness usually meant.”
The more you read, the more everything points to Connor being done with this relationship. This is where the story lost it for me. According to the blurb, “The scare shows Jake what’s really important, and the ordeal might make them stronger and bring them closer together than ever before.” Honestly, I don’t think it was Jake that needed that lesson. The whole reason for the lies and secrecy was not a good one, in my opinion, and I couldn’t understand why Connor was so cold and distant to Jake during the times they were together if this was a supposed huge romantic surprise. One that I felt should have included Jake. Yes, I loved the way Connor put the evening together but overall? Didn’t work and even the way Connor acted like, well, now I’m going to share the surprise so everything is hunky dory absolutely didn’t work for me. I wanted Jake to smack him.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2016I don't see a lot of already established relationship books, so More Than Okay was a wonderful treat for me.
Jake and Connor are the MC's here and Jake feels that something is off and that it's something with Connor and the mysterious and odd new behavioral patterns he's all about.
Now putting myself in Jake's shoes, I easily saw where his mind was going and I empathized with him.
Now, this is a fast, sweet, entertaining read so there's not much depth to the plot. No serious darkness lurking in the shadows.
This reads almost like a Hallmark Special in a sense. Jake thinking the worst and taking all of us on the "Hate Connor" train. But things aren't what they seem.
In the back of my mind I knew that but I found the end to be so endearing. It left a smile on my face. Truly a sweet read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2016Okay I’m just gonna come out and say it. Bru Baker’s 'More Than Okay' was a sappy love story and I absolutely adored it.
Baker has managed to create a rather quick read that fully envelops a depth of emotion and feeling.
Viewing things through Jake’s eyes you learn that he and Connor have been together for seven years and, due to many circumstances within their lives right now, he is dissolving into a sense of abandonment.
What I enjoyed most about 'More Than Okay' was the build-up. The familiarity of the toll “real life” can take on a relationship. Jobs that demand more of our time than we get at home, a roommate that doesn’t afford us any personal privacy, no more stolen kisses or quickies, the little irritations that now suddenly get under your skin, even I love you’s that are more reflexive than meaningful.
Now add to this the fact that neither Jake or Connor seem to be communicating and Jake’s mind begins to wander and fester when Connor comes home late at night, sneaks out from their cozy slumber or isn’t where he says he was. You can guess what happens: Assumptions, resentment and false accusations.
But when the moment arrives where Jake is ready to confront Connor it is all for not and so damn romantic – down to the most minute of details to recreate an old memory and in the process create a beautiful new one.
Let’s just say that Bru wasn’t kidding when she said this book “has the sweetest sex scene I've ever written—literally. You'll never look at s'mores the same way again!” I don’t know how I am going to explain my groaning every time that delectable desert even crosses my path from now on.
It’s not to say that you don’t feel the story has a little predictability. But even that gets tossed to the wind by Baker with an ending that is not what I have come to expect from romance novels yet is mature and healthy and left me hoping for the best. As someone who has been married to their high school sweetheart for 25 years this story touched every beautiful memory of those carefree days long since passed and rejuvenated my spirit to continue to create more.

4 stars - review by Dawn Honeycutt
Jake and Connor are college sweethearts, but when Connor starts spending more and more time away from their apartment Jake gets concerned they may be heading towards a breakup. Jake catches Connor in a lie and he starts to think that maybe Connor is cheating on him. What's really happening though is Connor has been planning a wonderful romantic night and finding the perfect place for them to live.
This short story is sweet and the ending is wonderfully romantic. A little background as to why Jake would jump to the conclusion that Connor is cheating would have been nice, but for a short story the author packs in a lot of good stuff. I enjoyed the authors balance of doubt and reflection with the wonderful happiness and love in the end.
