Mr. Darcy's Bookshop: A Pride and Prejudice Variation (Pride & Prejudice Variations) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,323 ratings

Cut off from his family’s fortune because he refuses to marry the woman his father has selected for him, Fitzwilliam Darcy takes up the only employment he deems tolerable, that of bookseller. Darcy is determined to support himself and to marry for love, but his powerful relations use their clout to keep customers and fashionable young ladies away. Worse, Darcy’s absence from Pemberley allows treachery to flourish.

Determined to see her older sister marry as well as possible, Elizabeth Bennet orchestrates their removal to London. Elizabeth isn’t searching for a husband of her own, but she is always looking for a good book. At a pleasant little bookshop in Cheapside, she finds plenty to read, and so much more. But should she give her heart to a bookseller and leave the life of a gently bred lady behind?

Mr. Darcy’s Bookshop asks what would happen if George Darcy and Sir Lewis de Bourgh had lived, and taken up their deceased wives’ quest to see Darcy and Anne wed. This is a lighthearted variation with laughter, love, a touch of villainy, and a happily ever after for our dear couple.

Summer Hanford writes gripping Epic Fantasy, swashbuckling Historical Romance, and best-selling Pride and Prejudice retellings. She lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York with her husband and compulsory, deliberately spoiled, cat. The newest addition to their household, an energetic setter-shepherd mix, has been trying, and failing, for six years to gain acceptance from the cat, but is adored by the humans.

Since the moment she read her first novel, Summer’s passion has always been writing. As a child growing up on a dairy farm, she built castles made of hay and wielded swords made of fence posts. She is also passionate about animals, travel, and organizing her closet. Nothing pleases her more than a row of tops broken down by sleeve length and ordered by color…except working on her latest novel with her cat in her lap, her dog lounging on the rug dreaming of squirrels, and a cup of tea at hand.

If you can suspend disbelief about how questionable it is to be ready to marry someone after only a few conversations, this is a delightful read. And as I wrote that, I realized that such a course of action is, to my knowledge, historically accurate.

I particularly liked that Bingley and Anne think for themselves (Anne is a force of nature), and that Jane is protective of Elizabeth, who is a touch naïve in this vagary.

That lightness is tempered by Wickham's ugly plotting, but

    ***MINOR SPOILER***

he doesn't make out as well as in canon, which is satisfying.

I very much enjoyed this story but I won't be rereading as I very much disliked many of the characters.
-- Mr Bennet is selfish and so desirous of his peace that if Mrs Bennet had a mean streak, I am not sure he would sacrifice said peace to protect his children. He just doesn't seem like a person worthy of any esteem.
-- I'm not sure I've ever seen a more vulgar Mrs. Bennet. It was absolutely appalling.
-- Much of Jane's behavior towards Elizabeth, while annoying/frustrating, was understandable, until you find out she wrote to Mrs. Bennet about Elizabeth's apparent interest in a lowly bookseller. That was absolutely a betrayal. Then not even letting Darcy stay for even a few minutes to visit with Elizabeth when they finally have a chance to talk. Cruel. As close as Jane and Elizabeth are supposed to be, it feels like Elizabeth is rather alone in this story.
-- Mr. Darcy's father and uncles never apologize or really give the impression they did anything wrong in their horrible treatment of Darcy.
-- No idea why Richard didn't slip Darcy a few coins or some cast off blankets or something to help him.
-- Anne is so selfish. She had no issues with Darcy suffering because the result was her living her best life. Also not offering anything to help, a bit of pin money, maybe a box of tea, during his yearly visits makes her a pretty self-centered jerk.

I didn't like Wickham or Caroline, but I'm not supposed to.

I did like this Mr. Bingley and the very little we get of Mr. Hurst and Mrs. Hurst.

But you're really left with Elizabeth and Darcy being significantly more likable than almost every other character and they don't really balance out all those other characters. It very much feels like them fighting for their happiness as individuals and as a couple against almost everyone else.

The premise is very interesting and is in keeping with what I understand about Darcy's character. I am a new follower of author Summer Hanford.

I absolutely adore this book!! In Mr Darcy's Bookshop, by Summer Hanford, the writer has taken a freshly authentic approach to the retelling of Jane Austen's wonderful Pride and Prejudice. I first read the book, and now have listened to the wonderful audio version with Stevie Zimmerman and The renowned Benjamin Fife. In this tale, Mr. Darcy is a poor bookshop owner. He is cut off from his family for years after refusing to submit to their demands that he marry his cousin Anne. When he meets Elizabeth Bennet in his shop, she actually has the elevated status. She and her family are unaware of who he really is. But their attraction is too great to be denied.

I loved just so much about this book, beginning with the storyline, where the characters have some different means, and there are some very different roles and situations explored. This made this book so unputdownable. I loved the characters, the good and the bad, and how they were portrayed. The sweet, loving chemistry between Elizabeth and Darcy was such a pleasure to see develop. Anne, with eccentric personality, was a hoot!. (If you haven't read "The Adventures of Miss Anne de Bourgh of Rosings," a prequel to this book, you really should Anne's personality will make much more sense to this story.) And Wickham, although we love to hate this guy, has been written even worse than usual.

I always love this writer's work, and this book is no exception. In fact, it is among my all-time favorites! I know I will read this one again and again. I thank Ms. Hanford for writing this beautiful tale. And whether you prefer to read or listen, I highly recommend this sweet, clean tale.

The storyline was unbelievable: Darcy‘s father and uncles Matlock and De Bourgh force him to fend for himself for YEARS because he won’t marry Anne. The first half of the story is very depressing. Darcy is poor, Wickham is plotting to become Mr. D’s heir, and Jane is not the kind, supportive, positive thinking sister of canon. I had to force myself to finish the book.

This started out slowly but it was better after the first couple of chapters. Very interesting story. Well written overall

I like the premise of Elizabeth and Darcy meeting in this instance. He is much calmer or more agreeable after having to scrimp and work for his living. I appreciate that there is still mystery and intrigue, but it's not drama that necessarily involves Elizabeth and Darcy's affection for one another.
Mrs. Bennet and Lydia are quite ridiculous creatures, but I am so thankful it was not Lydia that fell into Wickam's trap.
Anne is brilliant, and it seems to have done her a world of good growing up with her father rather than her mother. I'm glad the three cousins are close even if it has been years that they've been kept distant by Wickam's interceptions.
The large Christmas at Longbourne was such fun.
    Wonderful ending.

A nicely paced plot with well drawn characters, faithful to canon. However the narrative varies widely from the original. Hanford has a talent for nuancing character, seen especially in her treatment of Wickham. And I loved the twist on Anne de Burgh’s character.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really liked!

I think this variation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is very original. I never thought there would be one where Mr. Darcy isn’t the master of Pemberley, but to my surprise, it was really good. I liked Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth’s interactions—what better way to fall in love than through a shared passion for books?
The villains truly got under my skin (haha). I appreciated the dynamics among the cousins. I really liked this Anne.
Jane, Lydia, Kitty, and Mrs. Bennet were a bit insufferable, but overall, it was a good story that I finished quickly

I loved this book, it felt fresh but kept true to the characters. Well written with a hint of drama to keep the reader going.
Not to spoil but the ending was exactly what a reader in love with love will enjoy!
    Would highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darcy the ‘bookseller’.
Reviewed in Canada on January 22, 2024
Three widowed fathers, Mr. George Darcy, Sir Lewis de Bourgh, and the Earl of Matlock, are determined to see a pact undertaken years earlier to have Anne de Bourgh and Fitzwilliam Darcy wed, except—Darcy isn’t interested and has become estranged from his family by his refusal to capitulate to their demand. Cut off from his allowance, he sells some belongings and purchases a bookstore to make his living. Wickham has gained influence with Darcy’s father, and is determined to take his place. He has also befriended Bingley, who is yet unknown to Darcy, more to use his purse than be a friend, mind you. Meanwhile, at Longbourn, Elizabeth and Jane prepare to leave for London to escape Mr. Collins’s unwanted attention.

Elizabeth meets Darcy at his bookshop and a friendship ensues. Bingley also sees Jane there for the first time and, of course, is instantly infatuated with her. Jane is not well pleased with Elizabeth’s interest in a ‘bookseller’, and throughout the book, she is quite tenacious in trying to have her way by thwarting Elizabeth whenever she can. It wasn’t that she was mean, but I felt she was a ‘not-so-nice Jane’.

I really loved this variation where Darcy has to undertake an occupation to support himself and is just above living in poverty. He falls for Elizabeth quickly, but fears she would unlikely have him, being a gentleman’s daughter, in addition to his own fear that if she did accept him, the trio of fathers would make her and her family’s lives miserable. Also, while Wickham is as ever the villain, Summer Hanford has made him especially deceitful and even criminal.

The novel is well written and has a great plot that even includes a rare and significant role by Sir Lewis. Anne de Bourgh is not the commonly portrayed laudanum-induced Anne, but is a vibrant and outgoing woman who hunts and fences, among other things. I recommend the prequel to this book, ‘The Adventures of Miss Anne de Bourgh of Rosings’ be read first to have a better understanding of this Anne, although this book can stand alone.

I highly recommend this very satisfying and engaging page-turner.

    Kisses only.
