Fortunately for him, his scheming relation, Miss Anne de Bourgh, is more than willing to help. It doesn’t matter to Anne that Darcy doesn’t want her assistance. She learned from the best, namely her mother, that people don’t know what’s good for them until you tell them.

About the author

Summer Hanford writes gripping Epic Fantasy, swashbuckling Historical Romance, and best-selling Pride and Prejudice retellings. She lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York with her husband and compulsory, deliberately spoiled, cat. The newest addition to their household, an energetic setter-shepherd mix, has been trying, and failing, for six years to gain acceptance from the cat, but is adored by the humans.
Since the moment she read her first novel, Summer’s passion has always been writing. As a child growing up on a dairy farm, she built castles made of hay and wielded swords made of fence posts. She is also passionate about animals, travel, and organizing her closet. Nothing pleases her more than a row of tops broken down by sleeve length and ordered by color…except working on her latest novel with her cat in her lap, her dog lounging on the rug dreaming of squirrels, and a cup of tea at hand.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2023I quite enjoyed this variation and it’s surprising twists on our beloved story and new takes on some well known characters. And I do so love a story that comes full circle. It starts many years into the past and I loved the interactions between a mischievous young Anne de Bough and a surprisingly stodgy from a young age Fitzwilliam Darcy. The way Anne lights up and describes her perfect, princely frog had me cracking up! Not to mention the way these two stubborn individuals constantly butt heads. It’s like ‘You can’t do that!’ - ‘I can’t? Watch me! Who are you to tell me what to do?’ You can so see the family resemblance in their personalities and interactions with one another. When we get to present day, we’ve already had our Hunsford moment, so the story is fairly low angst. As the premise states, Anne is much more like her mother than she’d like to think, so she does try to meddle to fix Darcy’s love life, but she does come to realize the error in her ways in the end and I think she comes to respect her mother a bit or at least understand that while she does not approve of her methods, her mother really did want what was best for her.
While Anne has a big part, we do get quite a bit of Elizabeth/Darcy page time, as well as amusing interactions between the cousins Colonel Fitzwilliam, Darcy, and Anne de Bough. I absolutely love that they really do act like a family; exasperated with each other at times yet want the best for one another all the same. I also really enjoyed Anne and the Colonel ganging up to tease Darcy from time to time just for the Colonel to switch sides and team up with Darcy to tease Anne right back. What is family for if not to keep you humble?
The story did have some unexpected twist and turns. I thought I knew what was going to happen then the it took a turn that I did not see coming. The villain didn’t come as a surprise, but the climactic ending sure did. For the most part, there were no loose threads left hanging. The villain was disposed of and most everyone got their HEA. I do wish Lady Catherine had come around in the end, but really the saying goes that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Maybe one day she’ll see the error in her ways.
Overall, 5 stars. Highly recommend this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023I’ve always wondered what would happen if Lady Catherine and Mrs. Bennett were forced to have tea together. This story did not disappoint at all.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2024I've liked everything that I've read written by Summer Hanford. She's an excellent writer who takes the ideas flowing from specific changes in P&P and expands them into a fascinating story. I feel the same way about this story, though I must admit that it took me a while to appreciate this story. For the first seven chapters you are introduced to the characters past experiences - from childhood, youth, young adulthood to out-in-the world adulthood. I wasn't all that interested in that - the first time I read the book. The second time I read it I saw how the author had embedded in those chapters all sorts of important things for the rest of the book.
In the "present" day, Darcy proposes and does his normal, superb job of bungling his proposal. Anne finds out about it (she's much more persistent in this story - manipulative, too, which causes her trouble in the end) and finds out that he still loves her.
Anne plans to go to London (to follow Darcy and have him court her - or so she says), and she needs a companion to travel with her and suggests Miss Bennet. Lady C agrees concerning the trip to London but refuses to allow Elizabeth to accompany them - "Darcy is enamored with her!" Anne breaks a confidence and convinces Lady C to approve her companion.
Anne really wants Elizabeth there to throw her into the company of Darcy, and she involves Darcy in this plan. He is willing to play his part of wooing Anne in order to be close to Elizabeth. Anne comes off in this as much more attractive than Darcy ever supposed. Will he follow through on this faux courtship and offer for Anne? (well, I bet you can guess the answer to this!).
Because of Anne's manipulations, she and Darcy become estranged. He warns her about her becoming like her mother. It's Anne's comparable moment to Lizzy's rejection of Darcy's proposal. In the same way, she learns and grows from the experience.
Lady C is not happy with the outcome of this story (she rarely is!).
Darcy and Elizabeth are happy (they always are, in the end).
Well-written, as the author's books always are, I would recommend this to you. I read it first on Kindle Unlimited, and then I purchased the book as a way of encouraging the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024This variation is a uneven in its presentation: reasonably paced in most sections and suddenly a whirlwind of excitement in some. It is commendable how the author has conjured such humorous and engaging situations that kept this reader so interested.
What caused the star deductions though arose from various reason which are due to this reader’s preferences: focus is often taken away from Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy (but of course as the title indicates), the romance between the beloved couple somewhat gained traction only in the last 20% of the novel, Mr. Darcy is rather obstinately arrogant and proud almost until the end that if it were not for his cousins he would not have changed for the better for Elizabeth Bennet, and even Elizabeth was lackluster in her realizations and emotions for Darcy.
Still an enjoyable read for those who expect the unexpected and unusual, this one has a lot of fun and extraordinary situations in it that could make one gasp and laugh, especially because of the antics of one outrageous Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witzig und bezaubernd

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely story
I really enjoyed Anne, Colonel F. and Kitty’s characters.
ODC even with a HEA are less agreeable than usual, with more prejudice than usually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr gut!
