Murder and the Mechanic (A Father Douglas Cozy Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

UK born Father Douglas, senior sleuth and the Catholic priest at the local parish in the sleepy seaside village of Hastings Point, Australia is surprised when his beloved ’67 Alvis splutters and grinds to a halt; seemingly from contaminated fuel. But when he enters the village mechanic’s workshop and finds the owner pinned under a car bludgeoned to death, he is totally shocked. Along with his trusted dog, Winston, it's time to call in the local police and enlist some help from above.
Detective Tom Sullivan is completely clueless as to why anybody would want to kill Alice Grimshaw, the mechanic. But village pastor, resident busy body and part time, amateur sleuth Father Douglas has other ideas, which to the annoyance of Detective Sullivan are usually right.
Who would murder a mechanic? Is it related to the contaminated petrol? Father Douglas is immediately on the case seeking criminal justice, but sifting through the myriad of suspects including a disgruntled petrol tanker driver, a missing aboriginal apprentice and a jilted ex-lover —all with secrets to hide—only makes this amateur sleuth murder mystery more intriguing.
Mystery novel Australian crime fiction author C T Mitchell masterfully throws a number of spanners into the works in this international cozy mysteries series that will keep the pages turning. You won’t be able to guess the murderer until the end in this short story cozy mystery novella from a sleepy village Down Under.

A nice quick read which can be read in snippets.

Interesting characters, with good background. Easy to read and totally enjoyable. CT does a great job on telling stories and they are varied. Recommended.

A 1967 Alvis convertible ($60,000 - $105,000) is not a car to be messed with. I think there were on 26 convertibles that year. So, when Father Douglas’ car starts spluttering, something must be done – quickly. He pulls over to the side of the road and accepts a ride to Alice’s – the town mechanic. He finds Alice dead and he and Detective Sullivan must work together to find out what is going on. I enjoyed this short story and recommend it.

Very poorly written, almost childish, clumsy sentences, changes in tense. Plot doesn't stand up to much scrutiny either.
    Cannot recommend this author.

This is a very enjoyable short story. Father Douglas finds Alice, the town mechanic, dead when he goes to get help because his precious car is not working right. Someone has put water into the petrol and this is causing problems for many motorists. This seems to be connected to Alice's murder or does it? Father Douglas and Detective Tom Sullivan work together to catch the killer.
A copy of this book was gifted to me by the author and I am freely and voluntarily writing this review.
