Get ready for a gripping ride through the high-stakes world of politics and gender identity with Nadia Spencer, America’s favorite bi-racial cosmetic surgeon, UN Special Ambassador for Female Genital Mutilation, mother to two wisecracking kids, and wife to the Republican candidate for Mayor of New York. But there's a secret Nadia's been hiding: she used to be a man, and she wants to be one again.

I read two to three titles per day and just can't bring myself to spend the time trying to review very many of them unless there is just something very special, insightful, intriguing, emotional, educational, or just plain funny in so many ways, ranging from satirical to seriously and cynically snarky. At times a blackest comedy crosses over into cultural criticism, entertainingly educational.

Now imagine how very much I must have enjoyed this book which covered so many high points that made laugh out loud one minute, then sharing favorite lines while my spouse is trying to watch Netflix, which gets her snickering or guffawing, then shortly thereafter philosophising, in turns, forced to pause her program while she laughs or ponders with me... most appreciative of the delicious snarky satire which skewers American mainstream media, electoral campaigning, and stereotyping.

It's difficult to describe the way my emotions flip-flopped so quickly from hilarity to serious snark envy, or from a "huh" of insight and education right back to a burst out loud laughing moment that probably made my son consider calling for the thorazine squad to intervene. Regardless, this is great entertainment, and you just might learn a thing or two and laugh enough to survive this election process with at least a snicker, or even a knowing smile.

Of course, it absolutely impaled several current memes in the media, but who doesn't love that? And I know I'll be thinking about this book and sharing it with others far more frequently than I will any of the many others that I read in weeks ahead. It's a great ride for a few bucks, one you will delight in sharing over lunch, around the water cooler albeit demonstrably NSFW at times, or while riding in an Uber. 😆

I felt the story line handled the topic well. Not sure if it was 100% accurate in all details, but it was just a story and intended to entertain and perhaps make us pause and think.

The political story was interesting, but throat and points out what can happen when a small fish takes on a shark, he gets eaten.

This is very much "The Curate' s Egg" of a story, a most unusual story line, hilarious situations and sharp dialogue. However, some of the characters were less than convincing and I felt that it went on for too long, the last chapter could have been shorter.

When a writer with such finely honed skills turns his attention to big issues, such as media, politics, marriage, parenting and sexual identity, you know you are in for a great ride. From the first chapter, Galvin creates a world so intensely familiar that I was blown away to discover how much of it was a lie, and how far people would go to keep it that way.

Trenchant satire -- Galvin's chosen genre for savaging hypocrisy -- is a tricky one to pull off. He succeeds with a steady hand and an assured style. But he has a bigger surprise in store: behind the scathing witticisms are characters we grow increasingly fond of as they themselves grew in awareness. Highly recommended!

Original. A plot that winds its way through the absurdities of celebrity culture and political expediency. Be prepared to cringe a little as you recognise some of the essential truths that get teased out to unexpected and often insightful lengths. Interestingly, if you stick with this novel the characters become more likeable as they blunder on in their determination to achieve happiness or success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, funny and suspenseful. What more do you want?

I just powered through it. Five Monkeys is a lot of fun, while it makes a few sharp observations about gender and transgender. Galvin knows how to build suspense, while never losing sight of his main character's humanity. The story is peppered with scenes of overt sex, crossing into soft porn as a lubricant for an iconoclastic view on sexuality in the 21st century. I'm looking out for Galvin's next.

5.0 out of 5 stars There’s a lot to like here.

It would be very easy to be cheap and insensitive about transgender people, especially when the genre is satire, but to Galvin’s credit he creates a memorable, strong ‘female’ lead and imbues her with intelligence, compassion and a steel will. I expected some commentary on the issue of de-transitioning but the book does not offer any - partially because of the reasons the main character became a woman in the first place. I was going to give 4 stars because I feel there is something missing, but I’m rounding up to five for Galvin’s natural and easy way with words.

What's the worst thing that can happen to a politician running for election? Five Monkeys gleefully anwers this question, and then it does it again a few more times, just when you thought things couldn't get any worse.

I enjoyed this delightfully shocking and oddly plausible story.

A vibrant, witty and timely exploration of gender, sexuality and American politics in all its tabloid glory. Galvin obviously cares for his characters and their trials and tribulations and deftly explores what it means to be human in a refreshing and often hilarious fashion. A brilliant read from start to finish.
