Narvik: And the Norwegian Campaign of 1940 (Captain Macintyre's Naval History of WWII Book 3) Kindle Edition
The perfect book for fans of Ian Toll, Max Hastings, and Alex Kershaw.
In this brief, untidy campaign that lasted just six weeks, all branches of the Allied military service united against the lightning-fast invasion that the Nazis had surprised them with. On an almost hourly basis, air battles, amphibious landings by troops, and monumental naval engagements took place.
Donald Macintyre, the renowned military historian and escort commander, takes the reader to the heart of the battle, providing not just an overview but also provides fascinating details of the attack that left six German destroyers damaged within Narvik’s harbour, the sacrifice made by the damaged HMS Glowworm as it rammed the heavy-cruiser Admiral Hipper, the heroism displayed by one naval officer who worked tirelessly to evacuate the shore bases near Trondheim, and the final tragic loss of the carrier HMS Glorious.
The Norwegian campaign that took place in the spring of 1940 is often overshadowed by later successful Allied operations in the European theatre: North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. Yet, although German forces surprised and ultimately held off the Allied counterattack, Captain Macintyre demonstrates why this is such an important campaign and how the Allies had to learn difficult lessons here before they were able to march on to victory.
Narvik should be essential reading for anyone interested in the oft-overlooked campaign that took place during what was known as the ‘Phoney War’, proved a brutally eye-opening to the Allies, but taught them much about how to fight in the battles to come.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDonald Macintyre is on the best writers on WW2 Naval History. The best writer of British Naval history book fill in the blank of Norway Naval history and did a great job of analyzing the political situation and military situation that happened that caused the campaign to fail and the repercussions, the British military learned how to fight WW2 , such as raiding, providing air support and finally invading the enemies territories under a supreme commander, it was a tough lessons such as Crete and Malta. Awesome work!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2011The April 1940 Battle for Norway seems to have an enduring interest to students of the Second World War, and of joint and combined expeditionary warfare. As the author notes, the lessons learned in the opening battles of a war may have more lessons than those at the end. "Narvik" is Donald Macintyre's highly readable account of the opening campaign of World War Two in the West, in which the German Army, Navy and Air Force raced the Allies for control of Norwegian ports and airfields.
"Narvik" tells the story of the campaign primarily from the British point of view. The emphasis is on the complicated naval campaign in which the Royal Navy attempted to interdict its German counterpart while transporting a hastily raised British, French and Polish expeditionary force to northern Norway to take back the key port of Narvik. The Allied forces paid a heavy price for their unreadiness for war, and for their inability to operate in an environment where the Germans enjoyed air superiority.
Macintyre's account was written while memories of the campaign were still fresh. The account, for example, of the gallant fight of an outgunned HMS Glowworm against the German Heavy Cruiser Hipper is still quite moving. The text is supplmented with a nice selection of diagrams and photographs.
"Narvik" is long out of print but still highly recommended as a worthwhile account of a key episode of the Second World War, even in used condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illuminating Read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA very good description of the failed attempt to keep German forces from seizing Norway. Lots of mistakes were made and lessons were learned and the ultimate cost to the Allies of the Germans being able to use Norwegian ports ended up being very high.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous history.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseExcellent! A little known episode of WW2 explained in full detail. Whatever people think of the British debacle in Norway, bravery abounded and, no one gives credit to the Royal Navy for effectively destroying half of Hitler's navy thereby making an invasion of Britain just about impossible just a few months later.
Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of this campaign.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAn excellent and honest account of this lesser known campaign. With clearer leadership and determination this period of history could have been so different. I wish the history I had been taught could have been as balanced and objective.
The book is very well written and hard to put down. Highly recommended. I shall certainly seek out more of this authors publications.
