The Naval War Against Hitler (Captain Macintyre's Naval History of WWII Book 6) Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

A definitive account of the immense struggle to overcome Axis naval forces in World War Two.

Donald Macintyre’s authoritative and impeccably researched study is the perfect book for fans of Craig L. Symonds, Samuel Eliot Morison, and James D. Hornfischer.

Without overcoming Hitler’s
Kriegsmarine, the Allies would have had no chance of victory in the Second World War: Britain would have been starved of resources, its small expeditionary force would have been stranded in Dunkirk, and the Normandy landings four years later would have been impossible.

Renowned naval historian and active participant as a convoy escort commander, Macintyre charts the course of the naval war from Hitler’s invasion of Norway, covering how the Atlantic and Arctic convoys kept the Allies fighting even in their darkest moments, through to the largest amphibious invasion in history with Operation Overlord.

The Naval War Against Hitler sheds light on some of the most fascinating aspects of World War Two, including how Malta became a strategically vital battleground in the fight for the Mediterranean, and why fast battleships like the Scharnhorst, Bismarck, and Tirpitz were able to strike terror among the Allies even though they were often outnumbered.

Drawing on countless official histories, eyewitness accounts, as well as his own personal memories of the war, Macintyre recreates a thorough and gripping history. This book is essential for anyone interested in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, or Arctic campaigns, and brings to life how close Hitler and his navy were to winning the Second World War.

‘This is a straightforward, salty account of battle at sea, written from the Allied point of view, by one of the best U-boat hunters.’ The Journal of Modern History

‘While presenting very detailed orders of battle and operations, he succeeds in making naval war humanly real.’ The American Political Science Review

Macintyre's book is a compendium of the naval war waged against Hitler's Kreigsmarine. You name it, it's here: the U-boat campaign, the sorties by the DKM's major surface units, the Norway invasion, the Murmansk convoys, Matapan, and what I found most enthralling, the savage fighting in the vicinity of Malta.

About the only things I found lacking coverage were the operations in the Baltic theater against the USSR, the MTB/S-boat actions in the Channel and North Sea, the exploits of the armed merchant raiders (Atlantis, Komet, Pinguin, Orion, et. al.), and Operation Paukenschlag (English: Operation Drumbeat), the U-boat campaign waged on the eastern seaboard of the U.S.

Macintyre includes a fair amount of analysis along with his presentation of the historical facts. For example, one I found especially interesting was his comparison of the Luftwaffe's outstanding performance in the Mediterranean (particularly the Malta campaign) with its lackluster performance over the Barents Sea north of Norway/Sweden. He concludes that the aircrew were less motivated to take risks attacking the enemy on the frigid waters of the Barents, whereas they could expect a reasonable chance of rescue in the warm waters of the Med. It's nice touches like this that enhance the reader experience.

An expert, easy-to-follow summary of the 1939-1945 naval campaign in the West.

5.0 out of 5 stars but it is still an excellent read with a good collection of photographs and maps

This not the "first" edition I own by this author (Jutland and the battle of the Mediterranean);nevetheless it's still a thrill to be the first owner of this "new" book since it was published in 1971. The publication date predates the disclosure of Ultra in the mid 70s, but it is still an excellent read with a good collection of photographs and maps. On the subject of maps, these are by Arthur Banks and these appear in other books of the period, eg by Geoffrey Bennett, and are well worth a look on their own account. My only criticism is that amazingly there is no map covering the Bismark action !

That said, I would recommend this as a worthy addition to the library of any WW2 naval history buff.
