It is your dream, you are going to retire and move somewhere warm!
The author’s wry humour defines this whole book, whether he’s poking gentle fun at French rural life or the vagaries of technology ... James Gault Author of "The Dijon Secrets"
You take a break from work.
You search the French countryside.
Eventually, you find the right house, in the right location, at the right price!
You put in an offer.
The vendor says yes.
The legal process grinds through all the necessary steps.
The place is yours!
You have bought a house in the south of France.
Suddenly, you are the owners of the right house, in your dream location. That is if you can get the keys from the Estate Agent!
What you have forgotten is, that with a new house, you get new neighbours!
Will they be good neighbours?
As Jerry and Fran move into their new house in the village of Las Lilas, they are about to find out!!
(Ted Bun has) chosen to write this one in two ‘first persons’, alternating the narration between Jerry, the husband, and Fran, the wife. This device allows the author to exploit, in a good natured way, the comedy of the differences between their views of themselves and that of their spouse. more from James Gault's ★★★★★review

About the author

I was born in London, lived most of my life in the south of England. I only say that to excuse writing with a Sarff Lundin accint.
After a lifetime of not knowing what to do, RAF Officer, TV delivery driver, medical rep, trainer, computer guy … I'd even spent three summers running a naturist resort in Portugal. I decided to try something new and retired.
Lying by the pool in the South of France, a story started to take shape in my mind. Then the days got shorter, and the evenings longer, and I started to type. The string of random words turned into “The Uncovered Policeman.” Writing this story, I met the central characters, Bea being the most important. She nagged me into telling what turned into a series of 12 light, cosy romances with a cast of pleasant happy people, with quirky characters.
The New House trilogy, about a couple's first year of retirement in France, followed. “Almost a Year in Occitanie” - No, it is not autobiographical. OK, not very autobiographical.
More recently, Crooke and Loch launch their careers, solving mysteries and crimes in “The Summer of '71” and in a series of follow-up stories spanning the 1970s.
2020 marked the debut of another character … Melody. A lady of a certain age, a generous size and blinding intelligence, who first appears in "Problems and Passions."
The darkness of the great lockdown inspired some darker tales, for example "After The Event." As well as a few more escapist ones, such as "When The Music Stops" featuring the delightful Juliet Evans the singing solicitor

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2020I liked this story a lot, but it was too short. What happened at the "Aperaty"? What about Auntie Gillian's visit?
Kudos for the gentle introduction to naturism, but I still think Mr. Bun could've benefited from better proofreading.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2020This is the second time I have read this book, and I enjoyed it just as much...if not MORE than the first time. Jerry and Fran have started their new "retirement" lives in France. Fran soon discovers the comfort and normalcy of being clothes free. One passage in the book that made me laugh out loud was a tip of the hat to Rags & Bea, characters in another series of books by this author. "He finished his drink and we chatted for a few minutes about my book. “It’s a romance,” I tell him. “A young policeman meets a trainee solicitor.” Well played sir, well played.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2018The adventures of a British ex-pat couple in the South of France. This is a fast read that gets better as the tale goes along. Bun's depictions of the typical experiences that ex-pats encounter are enlightening and entertaining. Moving in to an old house that needs work is always a daunting task, made more so because it is in another country. As one who has struggled with similar problems in Arizona, I resonated with his descriptions of the peculiarities of pool maintenance. And of course, as with all of Ted Bun's fiction, the practice of naturism delightfully undergirds the narrative.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2018The book has great structure and some unexpected twists. I was exhausted by the incessant reference to getting, drinking, serving coffee and/or wine/beer. Too much detail that slowed the story down. Naturism came too late in the story line. Still great reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2018Jerry and Fran retire to country cottage in the south of France. The story is told from each of them in separate chapters, of their settling into the new house, fixing it up, integrating into the community and discovering new things about themselves and their new friends and neighbors. For fans of Mr Bun’s other works, there are Easter eggs to found
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2018I have enjoyed the author's Rags to Riches series so was glad to find a new book available. Enjoyed the characters a fun couple and their neighbours. Fun read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant read
An entertaining storyline, with skilful use of the changing viewpoints. A few typos that were annoying but nothing to get worked up about. I spotted one reference to a policeman and lawyer. I wonder who Mr Bun was thinking of?

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, feel-good, summer read
Nice way to spend a few hours on a summer afternoon. New characters, new story but the same basic themes. Hopefully the start of a new series - I have already bought the second one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny buns!
Light hearted, a fun way to tell the story of moving to France. Can imagine the couple easily making new friends. Well written as I could picture the house and garden and the area in detail. Enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next.

1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of time.
I spent the whole time wondering when the story was going to start. It is a weak tale, averagely written, probably derived from the author's own experience of a British Expat setting up home in the south of France. It attempts to be amusing by being self critical of the author's DIY activities, and considering frequently getting drunk hilarious. The attempts failed in my view, and I was I just left thinking "what a berk, why is he telling us this.?"
There is almost no plot, though a weak one slowly emerges in the author's wife developing a liking for doing her yoga and sunbathing naked (shock horror!), and discovering that their mostly absentee neighbours are naturists. Then the book ends! I suppose this is meant to be a come-on to buy the sequel, but I just found it annoying, and the book was so vapid that I wasn't going to buy a sequel anyway.
So my advice would be to avoid this book and buy something with a plot instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read
Different characters to the Uncovered Policeman series, but just as interesting and believable. A really good story and I am looking forward to the next episode
