- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2023Book 3 in Rubino's New York series follows the granddaughter of the couple in Book 1, as she Investigates the murder of her investigative journalist husband, who was killed in Dallas in November 1963 while he investigated the conspiracy to kill Kennedy. Would work well as a stand alone.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2015This is the 3rd book in a series about the McGlory family of New York City, but they're being released in reverse order, so I haven't read the first two yet. But after reading this, I'm glad I read it first. The players were introduced such that I felt I knew them personally by the time the book ended, which I didn't want it to. While reading, I was right there back in 1963.
One reason might be because I was alive that horrific day, and the days that followed, when President Kennedy was shot. Our nation was numb with shock. So I can understand Vikki Ward's shock when she heard her husband had been murdered, and then heard about President Kennedy moments after.
Her husband, also named Jack, was in Dallas that day, but he wasn't supposed to be. From his tapes and notebooks Vikki learns Jack went to Dallas to prevent the killing of JFK. Then he's murdered in his hotel bathtub. The cops close the case as unsolved, but that's not good enough for Vikki. She hires a detective who also gets murdered, then her father and godfather, who were gangsters in the days of Al Capone and Prohibition. They still haveenough connections to help her along. The story takes you to New Orleans to meet people who knew both Oswald and Jack Ruby, as well as Mafia figures suspected of being behind the plot to kill the president. More murders in New Orleans take place. (These are real people who were murdered in real life). Meanwhile Vikki falls in love with Al, the Italian bodyguard her godfather hires for her. When he's shot at in New Orleans, she ought to fall apart. But she doesn't. After a series of twists and turns, which were easy to follow, Vikki finds an obscure clue that leads her to her husband's real killer. The ending has surprise twists of its own, and I was left shaking my head in wonder. The killer isn't who you might think.
The budding romance between Vikki and Al happens so naturally they seem made for each other. Even though Al is engaged to be married in an old-world arranged marriage. I won't say how he gets out of that (but it's not another murder).
Not having read the first two books in the series, now I have to. This is one series I don't mind reading backwards. I want to know where these people came from and how they got here. I'm looking forward to reading the first two now.
