Night Shift: A second chance detective romantic suspense (Nightshade Book 2) Kindle Edition
A past that haunts no matter how much the distance…
Which one will strike first?
Eighteen deaths over eight years has left Shane Peters itching to find his mark. The death that started it all ensured his obsession with the murderer who had turned his life into a living hell, leaving him to raise a newborn daughter on his own.
Starting over wasn’t the easiest thing, but Emberlyn Roth had managed by shear grit and the skin of her teeth. It’s too bad one can’t outrun their past.
A protector of the wronged, Shane is torn between his duty as a detective for the Jacksonville PD and a quest to find himself some peace. Red tape binds his capabilities and moonlighting as an investigator for Nightshade Securities has him feeling stretched thin. Late nights on the streets and his sense of duty keeps him from being the father he wants to be. Throw onto his already rickety house of cards, an attraction to the mysterious Emberlyn, the lead he’s got on the murderer he’s been hunting for nearly a decade, and threats his woman is receiving by an unsavory character from her past, and he’s seriously tempted to take Dalton Kipper’s offer to join his team in a permanent basis.
Rules have a place, but when you’re faced with losing the one that means most to you, lines can become blurred. With the fate of his family’s future hanging in the balance, he’s ready to risk it all.

By Carey Decevito
Ms. Decevito knows just what tone to take to make sure that her readers are perched on the edge of our seat, breathlessly reading to find out what happens next with our favorite characters. The books in the Nightshade series offer thrilling and fascinating plot lines, steamy and sweet romance, heroes that we love, and villains that we love to despise.
This second book in the Nightshade series by author Carey Decevito is just as wonderful as the first one was. In Night Shift, we meet another employee of Nightshade Securities, Detective Shane Peters, and we get to sit back and enjoy the dangerously exhilarating and steamy ride that he’s about to embark upon with his neighbor Emberlyn. With every turn of the pages, we root for Shane and Emberlyn; we feel their pain, their passion, and fear their danger.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2018For eight years and eighteen deaths, Detective Shane Peters has been chasing a serial killer. The killings began with his own wife, Eva, and the women killed all looked like Eva. Peters could hardly be blamed for thinking that he is the ultimate target, and has a special interest in protecting himself and young daughter as he pursues the perpetrator. As a member of the Jacksonville PD, he has had little time to be a parent to his daughter Lana Rose, and her nurturing has been left to her Grandmother with whom they both live. Consequently, Shane has been thinking of retiring from the force and joining a more stable security organization.
His daughter establishes a connection with his neighbor, Emberlyn, who has her own problems - being divorced from an abusive husband, but still harassed and stalked by him. This connection blossoms to include Shane and Emberlyn, one which develops into a strong love, initially encumbered by personal and other issues. With both Lana Rose and good sex at the core of the story, Shane and Emberlyn get married and eventually have their own child and life with Grandma and Lana Rose as family.
The connection between the characters is imbued with thrills as Emberlyn’s husband seems to appear out of the woodwork, notwithstanding locks and security systems. Lana Rose is kidnapped by the killer and Emberlyn’s husband, and saved by Shane and his boys. Emberlyn’s husband escapes but in the end it is poetic justice that she herself does him in.
The book is quite well written. I liked the fact that the story is told in short chapters, and in the first person, often presenting the individual-character view on issues, actions and events. The characters are likeable. The most likeable and pivotal is young Lana Rose, who is strong beyond her years, and not afraid to express her point of view, or to ask (unsettling) questions, even to expose waffling responses. She becomes the point around which everything is woven, including the growing closeness between Shane and Emberlyn. Her Grandma is a jewel, and an adult mother to her son in his love issues with Emberlyn. I’m not sure I agree with her misfortune, as I did not find it useful to the narrative or to character impact, e.g. bring them closer together. Adding to the excitement of the thrills and close calls, the romance is very steamy both in actions and in words.
I found it interesting that Emberlyn installed a security system on her home without a peephole on the door. She opens the door to (unknowingly) allow her ex-husband to enter, thus exposing both Lora Rose and herself to danger. Lastly, the book is laden with f-bombs, on average two per page. If the reader can get around this, the book will be an exciting romance-thriller.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2018I am always looking for new authors who write romantic suspense so when I saw Night Shift all over my feed a bit ago I went ahead and gave it a one-click. And am I glad I did because once I started reading, I could not put this down.
I really enjoyed that both the main characters had something going on. Something dangerous and sinister. I will say that I found the jump from virtual strangers to lovers in the short span that it happened seemed a bit out of character, at least for Emberlyn, it didn't keep me from rooting for her and Shane.
Oh that Shane. A man that wore man hats. Son. Protector. Father. Cop. And as the lines on all of those started to blur together, things with Em started to become that much more clear. Even when danger was lurking around every corner.
Night Shift was one twisty and thrilling ride. I can honestly say that I didn't see that last little shocker coming and it had me reading furiously to see just what would happen. Shane and Em's journey to put their past behind them and move forward towards the future was heart pounding and kept me guessing until the bitter end.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2018Night Shift(Nightshade Book2) by Carey Decevito is a fast paced thriller with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure. Shane Peters is a detective with the Jacksonville police looking for a serial killer, and this one is personal. This killer murdered Shane's wife a little over eight years ago. Now the killer might hit yet again, and again it hits close to home. Shane develops feelings for his neighbor Ember in a roundabout way, namely through his daughter, who has befriended the single, divorced woman. When she invites danger into her door, the tension goes up a notch. This is a well written book with believable characters and a well plotted story that will play on your emotions. A good combination of thriller with some romance thrown in, Night Shift will keep you reading until the final pages. Highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2018This was just as good as the first one. I love Shane and Ember! Carey hasn’t written a book I haven’t loved. They are all amazing. I can’t wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Night Shift (Nightshade series bk 2)
Great story line, fast flowing, emotional on every level. This author has made the characters solid - strong, likable, argumentative - everything a good story needs to keep the reader turning the pages and not being able to put the book down. Evie was especially delightful, amusing and humorous, as children often are. Well worth a read.
