- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2024Set in the future where A.I.s are highly developed and used extensively. The story is written in first person through Paislee's point of view. She purchases a handsome, muscular male A. I., Pellegrin, to be her companion after getting dumped by her boyfriend. She believes she owns Pellegrin, but gradually discovers that in reality he owns her and she has no freedom. He begins controlling every area of her life. Her friend, Tate, warns her that Pellegrin is dangerous and trying to take over the planet. Paislee cares about Tate but they aren't allowed to be together in this very controlling society.
The book is exciting and suspenseful and we uncover the plot as Paislee does. I enjoyed the book, but I thought Paislee was too easily and repeatedly seduced by Pellegrin even after she discovers he's evil and dangerous. I also thought Paislee could have had a more active role in the climactic ending especially since it was written in her point of view.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2020A world ravaged by war and androids are created to help restore order. Paisley purchases a companion android and soon she becomes a prisoner in her own home. I stumbled across this book and my first thought was “I’m not into Sci Fi”. This book was very good. I liked the characters and how the rebels were outsmarting the androids. Futuristic with relationship issues and intrigue.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2023No Freedom: An AI Thriller, by Inge-Lise Goss is the first in a trilogy, before No Reprieve and No Surrender. It’s definitely science fiction, documenting a surreptitious power struggle between humanity and a race of androids created by and controlled by “The Institute,” after a devastating war. It’s also a rather strange romance.
Paisley Hobson is morose after her fiancé broke off their relationship and has purchased an android, Pellegrin, who is good-looking, intelligent and seemingly compassionate—the perfect companion, but Pellegrin is much more than he seems. Pellegrin slowly begins to take over Paisley’s life, until she finds—much like humanity in general—that her freedom is fading away.
The characters are complicated and well-drawn. The world makes sense. It’s an engrossing story, and unlike most romances, particularly those where the relationship is drawn out into an entire series, the male protagonist is not a good guy, and the reader is uncertain whether to root for the relationship between Paisley and Pellegrin to succeed or to fail.
There is a lot of suspense and many of the plotlines are left unresolved by the end of the first book. It ends at an appropriate place, however, and perfectly sets up for the next. I enjoyed the story and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2019Although I wouldn't call the way this book ended a cliffhanger, I felt as though there should be more books. The author created a reasonably detailed society and IMO left too much 'unfixed' at the end.
However, the story was decently written, except that (here comes the little spoiler) I felt the women was too easily almost sexually enslaved by the androids, especially in the one case where she knew very well she couldn't trust him. I did read it all, and might read another by the author later, especially if she expands on her treatment of this world.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2021‘No Freedom’ by Inge-Lise Goss is a science fiction thriller which takes a hard look at how human beings, enamored with technological advances, turn a blind eye to their consequences until it is almost too late. In this case, we follow the life of Paislee on the rebound from a relationship gone bad, still pining for a forbidden love of her youth, one who she could never share her life because of the strict strata system in force in society. Her mother, of all people, suggests she acquire an android companion from the ubiquitous Institute. The android, Pellegrin Murr, is an accomplished companion, chef and lover, and quickly fills the void in her existence. However, Paislee slowly begins to notice how not everything is as perfect as it seems. Indeed, her android is far more than she bargained for, and quickly dominates the relationship, leaving Paislee to fight back ineffectually as her freedom, and that of her friends, family and co-workers, leeches away.
The story revolves around the two protagonists, Paislee and Pellegrin, and the author creates these two interesting and fully developed characters in masterful fashion. Most of the events are seen from Paislee’s point of view as they happen, and we, the readers, are privy to her innermost thoughts and doubts, and the profound sense of hopelessness that invades her as she loses control over her life.
This novel is the first book of a series, and as such, the ending deliberately leaves some of the plotlines unresolved. However, the tale recounted here can be read as a standalone novel, which will appeal to fans of subtle dystopian fiction, and those looking for a modern take on Orwellian themes. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2019New Freedom: An AI thriller is an exciting futuristic tale where technological advancements have consumed human lives, but unfortunately comes at a devastating cost that no one expected.
Paislee has purchased an android companion in order to fulfill a void in her life until she’s ready to date again. Almost immediately she suspects something is off with her human-looking android, Pellegrin. Then Tate, the forbidden love of her youth, re-enters her life again. As the story progresses, she learns terrifying things about Pellegrin and his nefarious creators, and discovers a rebel group is trying to wipe them out. At the same time, Pellegrin has her under twenty-four hour surveillance and has set a trap to pressure her into helping his cause.
I recommend this unique story to all not just SF fans as it grips from start to finish.
Here's hoping No Freedom is the beginning of a new series.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Read!
Review 4.5 rounded up to 5*
This book is a fantastic dystopian thriller. I loved it!
Paislee Hobson is a character I struggled to connect with at first, but as I read more of the story, I liked her a little more, though her paranoia began to annoy me, even though it was justified. Paislee is a paralegal living in a future world that has gone through a cataclysmic war that left the humans struggling to cope with the aftermath. Androids were developed by The Institute to help the remaining citizens rebuild the world. When Paislee's boyfriend dumps her, she purchases an android as a companion. But as Pellegrin's hold on her life tightens, an old flame reappears, and strange and deadly events threaten her life.
When I heard that this book had been released, I purchased it without reading the synopsis. The reason for this is that I've read other books by this author and knew I was in for a thrilling adventure. I wasn't wrong!
I started reading this book, told through Paislee's POV, and was immediately hooked. As the story unfolded, I found myself convulsively reading, but dreading it at the same time. Have you ever sat watching a movie with your hands over your face because the suspense is killing you and you can't watch it, but you don't want to miss anything either? This is what I felt while reading this book. The author skillfully builds the suspense so you don't know whether you should be cheering for Paislee or not, or liking Pellegrin or not. This story has the futuristic feel of Minority Report and iRobot but also reminded me slightly of one of the author's other thriller series, Tegans. There are several twists that kept me guessing, and I found myself waiting for the other shoe to drop. Pellegrin is a scary villain. He's a control freak, and his attitude is one of a dangerous psychopath and master manipulator, but this could also be Paislee's paranoia talking. His identity and role at The Institute is a mystery, but I had a feeling when reading this book that it's not what I think it may be. Then again, he could exactly be who I think he may be. I love books like this. I've always been interested in robots/androids as a concept but would be completely scared if AI ever got this powerful. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but it's my fear of the unknown talking, and until I learn otherwise, I'm keeping my worries alive. I guess I'll have to read the next book to find out what happens next, as the book ends on a small cliffhanger, and I can't wait.
Inge-Lise Goss has written an intriguing dystopian thriller full of mystery and suspense. I love her writing style, which is fast-paced, and the flow's fantastic. I am curious to see what this author comes up with in the future.
Although there is mention of sex, there are no explicit scenes and tends to fade out. I do not recommend this book to younger readers due to some violence. However, I highly recommend this book if you love science fiction, dystopian, horror, suspense, and thriller genres. - Lynn Worton

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! This book just grabbed me!
I honestly don’t know how I stumbled across this book, but I’m glad I did. I can only describe this as one of those can’t-wait-to-get-back-to-my-book books. The idea of androids with human intelligence and lightening quick reflexes and cunning, taking over the world had me pondering on all the ‘what ifs’ ….
The book takes place in the future, in a kind of dehumanising, dystopian world, and advertises itself by asking if humans will survive the android uprising? But these androids are so lifelike that Paislee, the heroine of the story, finds herself genuinely wondering if certain ‘people’ are indeed people or androids.
The storyline follows Paislee after her boyfriend, Emmet, has dumped her, and her parents loan her the money to purchase a live-in android lover, housekeeper and cook. And it’s here the book starts to get a little bizarre because there’s something not right about this particular android. Well, his name for starters, Pellegrin, that ain’t right, is it? Whatever possessed the ‘Institute’ – who have created a kind of totalitarian police state – to name one of their androids Pellegrin (instead of Bill or Jack or Adelbert or Dorcas or Darth) is beyond me, but it’s not easily forgotten.
Paislee owns Pellegrin, who’s a little too perfect, socially and in the bedroom, but it soon becomes apparent that perhaps it’s Pellegrin who owns her!
If I write too much more I’ll end up putting spoilers in here, which I don’t want to do, for although they live in a virtual police state, life runs well. The fly in the ointment here, though, is the Rebels, violent trouble makers who are uprising against the androids, and the reader really doesn’t know which direction the book is going to go.
And at this point, you’re hooked! A great book, and I shall certainly be reading more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down
Wow! I’m quite a fan of thriller books and stories set in dystopian worlds and this book is the best of both of those. The plot has many twists and turns and it’s gripping from the first page to the end. I really wanted to read more as soon as I had reached the end.
Paislee’s journey throughout the book is filled with intrigue, action and adventure. She is brave and very human on a dystopian universe. The world created is at times scarily realistic as well as nerve wracking. This is not my usual type of read and although I like a variety of genres I was still surprised by this amazing book, if I could give more than 5 stars I would.

5.0 out of 5 stars An A.I. threat to humanity?
Thwarted in love, Paislee’s mother suggests that she help her buy an android companion to help her get over her last love, Emmett.
Sounds like a good plan? At least Paislee wouldn’t be lonely.
That’s when her plans begin to unravel.
When something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Inge-Lise Goss writes an absorbing story that is exciting with lots of twists and turns.
She builds the suspension up and then almost immediately brings it down again, so that the reader is left, like Paislee, wondering what is really true.
In a world where we are hearing more and more about A.I., this novel has a feel of a reality that may yet be to come.
That’s a scary thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars THRILLS AND PASSION
Fascinating, thrilling novel set around topical theme of robots and androids, and a conflict between them and humans. Following a cataclysmic event on earth, the world has been rebuilt through the use of androids. Paislee, a human legal clerk, has a human-looking android partner, Pellegrin (who satisfies her every need…) But then strange things start to happen. Can Pellegrin be trusted? What about Paislee’s long-lost youthful lover who suddenly returns? Who can she turn to? Great stuff, with a great mix of intimate, personal romance and passion, and cataclysmic world events. Thrills, passion, romance, and the fate of the world on a knife-edge…
