Homicide Detective Laney Holt is a dedicated law enforcement officer. When she and her partner are called to investigate a dead body, a chase after the shooter ensues.

Her partner is shot and Laney just barely manages to escape injury. But now she faces her worst nightmare ...one that will alter the course of her life.

This is a short story, prequel to THE DEAD GIRL (BREAKDOWN, BK 1). The series includes The Dead Girl by Debra Webb, So Many Secrets by Vicki Hinze, All The Lies by Peggy Webb and What She Knew by Regan Black.

You’ll want all four books in the thrilling BREAKDOWN series, which are best read in order, as well as all four BREAKDOWN short reads: No Looking Back by Debra Webb, Her Deepest Fear by Vicki Hinze, Just One Look by Peggy Webb and Trust No One by Regan Black.

This first short story is well written, with page-turning action from start to finish. Even though less than 50 pages, the characters are finely drawn.

I'm really looking forward to reading what sounds to be an exciting new series.

Laney a good cop for eight years, when her and partner got a call, of a shooting. Questioning people around the area, got a description of a guy in a hoodie. Continuing they notice one, he turned and fired at her partner. She returned fire, upon checking,he was just a kid, a kid who had made wrong decisions by taking a gun, and died. Partner was going to be okay, but she turned in her badge, sold house, and most of her belongings. Would she find another place, a.small town, with no crime, a good beginning to a series.

Meet Homicide Detective Laney Holt of the LAPD. Today is going to the the worst day of her life, a day that will have her questioning herself and her ability to continue doing her job.......The only thing she could do was to follow her training, to stop the suspect. and to protect her partner, but as the suspect turns and beads down on her with his weapon, the horror of the situation hits her and still all she can do is react and learn to live with the outcome.....This day is the defining moment that will send her to the peace of Shutter Lake...but will she find peace anywhere?

This is a short read, an introduction to one of the amazing women of Shutter Lake, a Utopian community created by some powerful people with the means and the ability to create a home for them and those they care about where the worst crimes committed are of nuisance but not of danger.....until now.
Continue reading about Detective Laney Holt and the town of Shutter Lake in Debra Webb's The Dead Girl, the first in the four novels in the explosive mini series BREAKDOWN!

This prequel, No Looking Back, sets the stage for all the action in Book 1 in the Breakdown Series THE DEAD GIRL by Debra Webb. This short story is fast paced and no nonsense exactly like Homicide Det. Laney Holt. Her driving force is the serve and protect but something happens to shake her and change the course of her life. She seems to have found a perfect escape from the flashbacks and nightmares. A new job as Deputy Chief of Police in an idealic town, Shutter Lake, CA.
No Looking Back is the very beginning of a unique 4 book, 4 author mini series. Each book has a prequel and reveals more information about the characters, the murder, and the secrets of the citizens of Shutter Lake until we find out who killed THE DEAD GIRL.
Debra Webb. Vicki Hinze. Peggy Webb. Regan Black. All talented writers in their own right joined together to being us this unique reading experience. I highly recommend that you come along for the ride.

For a short story, this packs quite a punch! We are given a glimpse into the past of then Detective Laney Holt. This brief look provides insight into the manner in which present day Deputy Chief Holt approaches what takes place in the sleepy, idyllic town of Shutter Lake.

Although this is a quick tale, it is full of emotion and provides understanding of what motivates the character of Laney Holt in the first of BREAKDOWN series, “the dead girl”. It’s a powerful story to accompany an even more powerful series! Well worth the read!!

So... There will be 4 novels surrounded a murder case in an idyllic town called Shutter Lake. These novels will be published in October. Now, in early September, we got a glimpse on our main heroines of those novels. The short stories told background stories on why they all ended up in Shutter Lake, and to make us understand better about their characters and why they were the way they were in Shutter Lake.

This book about Laney Holt, a homicide detective with LAPD who just got promotion to sergeant. It's a very short story, told us the exact event that led Laney to Shutter Lake. Some would say it's just too short. Only 5 short chapters that ended in half the book length. The rest of it was excerpt (first chapter) from the first Breakdown novel. A bit expensive for the length. However, I liked it. I liked the story, I liked Laney, and I'm definitely looking forward to read her story in Shutter Lake. It's a very straight story, nothing wasted. So, though I still think it's a bit too expensive, I have no regret in buying it.

What I have to say here applies to the whole series. The stories (plots, characters) are generally good and well-written. However, the town of Shutter Lake simply isn't reasonable. Not only has there never been a place so great, but the idea that it was designed as nearly 100% self-sufficient is clearly inaccurate from the start. The residents have cars, laptops, and cellphones. The kitchens have modern appliances. There's just no way on earth it could have been as detached from the rest of the world as whoever designed the series claims that it was.
